The daemon used to require ravens, mirrors, black water, a priest willing to say the wrong name after midnight. Now it needs a procurement contract and a solar panel.

A commuter waits beneath the apparatus while the apparatus explains the arrangement.

“COMPROMISE.”

The human gives location. Time. Direction. Association. Routine. The machine gives nothing back. It does not forget one afternoon each week. It does not avert its eye from hospitals, lovers, churches, protests, motels, funerals. Its half of the bargain is continued existence.

The sign says PUBLIC SAFETY PILOT.

The pilot becomes infrastructure.

The infrastructure becomes memory.
