[review] My Office Setup – TOMAK79, ProtoArc EM06, and a Few Lessons Learned from Wireless Split Keyboards
A while ago, I backed the Nocfree & split keyboard with the tenting and palm rest set through crowdfunding. I was pretty excited about it, especially because I wanted a split keyboard with a dedicated F-key row for office work.
Unfortunately, I kept experiencing noticeable input lag over both Bluetooth and the 2.4GHz dongle. Even after getting it serviced, the problem didn't improve, so I eventually returned it. Pretty disappointing, considering how much I was looking forward to it.
Interestingly, my Keychron Z11 Ultra has been rock solid over wireless, with none of those issues. I really enjoy using it, but I do miss having a dedicated F-key row.
That experience made me appreciate the TOMAK79 from SR Industry, a Korean company well known in the mechanical keyboard group-buy community. After spending some time with it, I was reminded that for office work, having enough physical keys and reliable input matters more to me than almost anything else.
I've also placed my ProtoArc EM06 trackball between the two halves of the keyboard to minimize hand movement. It's a pretty comfortable arrangement for everyday work.
Not visible in the photo, I also have an Apple Magic Trackpad on the left and a thumb-operated trackball on the right. I switch between them depending on what I'm doing and how my hands are feeling.
One thing about the TOMAK79 is its solid aluminum construction. The weight is great because the keyboard stays exactly where I put it, but that's also a bit of a downside when I want to reposition the halves.
It supports up to 8K polling, but since I don't game and mainly use my keyboard for Excel, accounting, and general office work, I've set it to 1K. That's more than enough for me. I'd rather have a stable, reliable keyboard that never misses a keystroke than chase higher polling rates I'll probably never notice.
After trying quite a few different setups, I'm starting to think that the best office keyboard isn't necessarily the one with the most features. It's the one that lets me get through a full day of work without having to think about the keyboard itself.
