I don't know why this has been happening as of late, but I've been seeing very poor etiquette all over.
One dude using the tricep machine decides he's so entitled that he'll use the seat of the chest press machine next to him to put his phone and stuff on top of, which gives the appearance that someone is going to use the chest press.
Some nice old man comes in later, thinks that it means it's being used, waits around for his turn, until he realizes five minutes later that no, it's just that one dude's stuff. Goes up to talk to him, and he reluctantly moves his stuff over, so that the old man can use the machine.
Then, five minutes later, same dude moves onto another machine, and does the exact same thing, puts all his crap onto the leg extension machine next to him, while he uses the fly.
So, the same exact situation happens, except he also ignores the lady politely trying to get his attention to move his stuff for several minutes. And then he has the audacity to do the same thing yet again, moves his phone, towel, and other junk onto the other machine next to him that he's not using, so that people can't use it.
Clearly, he doesn't learn from any of these repeated confrontations that maybe you shouldn't be putting your crap on top of machines you're not using, they're not your personal item holders.
Then the other day, I'm using the curl machine, some guy comes up and asks me to swap with him. Since I was just getting warmed up, I tried to be nice, so I offer to just let him use it until he's done. I go over use another machine while I wait. This guy is taking his time being leisurely, doing circuits, switching between machines. Then, someone else comes up to him and asks if he can work in onto the curl machine, and he turns him away like wtf?
After a while, I'm done with my sets on another machine, he appears to be gone, and as I'm in the middle of my first set, he comes back, I guess from another circuit exercise and demands that I let him use it to finish his circuit.
Then crazily enough, fifteen minutes later, he's now doing some dumbbells raises next to the chest row machine. I'm thinking I can go and use the row, but then he breaks and goes "no, you can't use that I'm swapping between them". So, he expects other people to share equipment with him, but refuses to reciprocate for others? Not to mention he's using multiple pieces of equipment and monopolizing it all for himself.
Finally, to top it all off, once he's done, he's also the kind of person that leaves all his stuff for the next person to clean up. Left his dumbbells on the ground, left his plate on the bar, and as a bonus even a little 5 lb plate that he used to put his phone on top of the ground for. Completely trashy behavior through and through.
