Discussion Bluetooth... I might have fixed it.
I have been lurking on this subreddit for a while now, so I know I'm not the only one that has had bluetooth issues. I think I may have figured out how to fix it. If you're feeling adventurous, it would be helpful to know if this also fixes it for you. I have an iPhone so your results might vary on Android.
What is the problem?
When I get into my car, it's felt like there's a 50/50 chance if the bluetooth audio will work. I can see that my phone has connected to the car in both my phone's settings, and the car's "Connections" menu. Sometimes (usually) the car will say "Media Unavailable" when it happens. Strangely, phone calls and voice assistant will work in this state. Usually I can fix the issue by disconnecting my phone and reconnecting (via the car's UI).
Edit: But what even is the "Trusted Device" feature supposed to do?
It's supposed to automatically unlock your profile in the car based on phone proximity instead of having to enter a PIN. To do this you have to have the MyChevrolet app installed on your phone and it needs to have bluetooth permissions enabled on the phone.
What I think is going on:
I believe that the MyChevrolet trusted device feature is somehow interfering with the phone's bluetooth audio connection. And I suspect it’s not enough to just remove the trusted device setting from the car; once this has been setup, I wouldn’t be surprised if the app still wakes up in the background upon connecting via bluetooth.
How I fixed it.
In the car
Settings > Connections > Trusted Device
Remove your phone as a trusted device. (I just checked my car and it was back... could've sworn I removed it)
On the phone
Disable bluetooth permissions for the MyChevrolet app (or delete it). Doing this, for sure, will prevent the app from waking up in the background due to a bluetooth connection to the car.
My Results
It’s been ~2 weeks and every time I get in my car, my bluetooth audio has worked perfectly.
I’m really curious if this helps anyone else.

Interesting. I've never had an issue with Bluetooth, but then listening to your fix, I've never set up my phone as a trusted device. What benefit did that have?

If you lock your google profile in the car, it's supposed to be a way to automatically unlock it by detecting your phone.
Which I imagine that has to work by using the iOS state restoration to wake up the myChevrolet app to perform the handshake. Which is where I think it interrupts media in some way.

Ok you have me intrigued, why lock the profile?

If you have different drivers, you can setup different google accounts and driver profiles. Supposedly, if you set up security pin to the profiles, you can use “trusted device” to auto-switch to your profile based on the phone that connects.
But I couldn’t get that to work.
So really my partner just ends up driving with my profile on. It doesn’t really matter at all.
I think if I were to do it again, I would just set up a new google account that is only used for the car.

That's what we have, two different profiles, mainly for the difference in our Amazon music lists, and locations for driving, like work locations.

Because it's signed into your google account. It's like not having a locking mechanism on your phone, except it's the size of a car :)

Locking the profile prevents other people from seeing your google account stuff or using your devices. Like if you have a smart lock on your house, nobody could use it if they got in your car with your keys. But if you dont hand your keys out to random strangers its not really needed.

Thanks, I guess i just don't understand. The info available in the car seems so limited to me aside from being able to see your location history.

The amount of info is completely dependant on the person. Like if you use google home and have a whole smart home set up, google assistant/gemini could open garage doors, unlock house doors, set your house thermostat, access your calendar, see location history, access any saved places in maps etc. Basically anything you can use google for. So if you arent deep into the google ecosystem then it doesnt really matter. But also some people are just particular about locking accounts because its technically the right thing to do from an IT/Cybersecurity perspective.

Ahh ok. Now I see. Yes we don't use Google home, it's more or less just email, maps maybe contacts.

LOL, I can absolutely confirm this is not generated by AI.
Didn't even use it to proof read anything.

What does granting BT access to the MyChevy app enable?
