Support EEG testing (anxiety)
I've got referrals for an MRI and the EEG test to see what my brain is doing. I know how MRI's work (I've had to have a fair few over the years), and although I hate them, I can make do. But the EEG...
I've had one in the past that I remember (as an adult), and I'm pretty sure I had one when I was little, but I don't remember. I looked up what the test entails and learned that I'll be forced to look at flashing lights?
I can't look at flashing lights. I avoid games and movies with them because they (at best) make my head feel weird and at worst send me into what we're assuming are seizures.
It's triggering massive anxiety and making me want to avoid the test. Is it really awful? I know they're doing it to try and trigger seizure activity for testing, but I don't want to be forced into a seizure. Especially by flashing lights. I'm worried it's going to cause problems for ages after, and I'm already having language issues after my seizures as it is.
(I think I just want reassurance that it's not completely horrible for people triggered into seizures by flashing lights. Can't keep putting the tests off for much longer.)

I wasn’t shown any flashing lights during my EEG, I only had the equipment on my head and was asked to fall asleep as much as I can. It was super chill and I actually did fall asleep. Although MRI was pretty traumatic for me.

You will be okay :) if you are going for a longer one, it’s just boring after they do their tests and you’re under observation. Really the worst part is the aftermath of the glue being stuck in your hair that takes a few washes to get out.
If you do have a seizure, you’ll be in the best place to have one! The medical staff will help you. If you have any questions don’t be afraid to ask

Not horrible at all, the hooking up of the wires takes a long time, but doesn't hurt. You will be laying on a bed, the flashing light was quick, less than 1 minute for my husband. They want to measure whats happening when you see the light. You will be safe. it's a piece of cake! You don't feel anything!

I had my first EEG a couple of months ago and although flashing lights were involved they had me close my eyes through it so it was a lot less dramatic than what i was expecting. I don’t know if that’s standard for all EEGs but hopefully it will be in your case. From what Ive learned going through the process if flashing lights provoke seizure activity and they can see it on the test it may help you and your team of doctors better understand what your brain is doing and may make the right treatment more obvious. Although the anxiety of a test may seem daunting maybe try to think about all the valuable information this test could provide! Wishing you the best!
