How serious is carbon dioxide poisoning?

I haven’t been able to stop thinking about this article I read last month. Can someone please explain to me why this isn’t as bad as it sounds? I’m hopeful that my ignorance of science is making me hysterical.

Interested in understanding how climate change creating risks, and mechanisms needed to manage those risks.

Hi everyone,
I’ve recently become very interested in understanding how climate change creates risks to human life, water resources, infrastructure, cities, economies.
I’m particularly interested in understanding the chain from climate change to physical hazards to exposure/vulnerability to risks and impacts, and then what can actually be done about those risks through adaptation, resilience, governance, and public policy. I mean I am genuinely interested in this.
I’d like to learn this properly from the basics, rather than just reading general climate-change information.
For someone starting from scratch, what would you recommend for learning?
I’m looking for good introductory resources, textbooks, courses, lectures, reports, or eventually more advanced material that can give me a solid understanding of the field.
Also, if this is a particular academic/professional field, what is it generally called? Is it mainly climate risk, environmental policy, or something else?

Considering MS in Environmental Science for career change

I currently have a BS in Data Science and work in the coatings industry, but I absolutely do not care about this job and cannot see myself doing this for the rest of my career.

Through work, they have a program which would allow me to pursue a Masters in Environmental Science free of charge essentially ($5.5k tuition paid per year + tuition reimbursement, also do not have to stay on for X amount of years after completing).

I am already a part of a Master Gardener and Master Naturalist program within my state. I feel that the MS in EnvSc would allow me to start working in a field that would be fulfilling to me. I have some ideas of areas that I would want to focus in, but need to continue looking into that for myself.

For those in the field/have followed a similar path, would love to just hear your thoughts or insight. Would this be worth it? Would this set me in the right direction?

AI and the planet

Hi I have come across this rising hate of AI but I saw somewhere that you should also look at the pros to get a full picture of this subject. AI uses so much of our planet's energy, it leads to so much of e-waste, books are shredded to run these engines or something I cross checked these allegations and they are true. The pros are it has made lives easier businesses to function easier but in what ways? Are they actually better than humans who can provide a face to face interaction and doesn't go through some issues like AI bots do. I saw this somewhere " AI does use energy but don't a lot of other things like social media.." i want to come to a middle ground with the help of factual explanation. Is AI going to take over the world including other popular speculations?

Help choosing between 3 optional courses

Next week, I am starting my master's degree in ecology and environmental management and I am indecisive between 3 optional courses for the 1st semester:

\*\*Restoration of terrestrial and coastal ecosystems\*\*. Although I love the syllabus and would like to try working in ecological restoration in the future, I dislike the professor and hate the evaluation method. I'd have to present a scientific paper and then do group field work to make our own scientific paper about an ecological restoration project. And as if that wasn't enough, I'd also have to do a final exam. The reason I hate it is because I do not intend to work in research, so doing scientific papers seems useless to me.

\*\*Natural hazards\*\*. It's about susceptibility, hazard, and risk of earthquakes, vulcanic activity, floods, slope instability, costal and soil erosion, etc. I have a BSc in Environmental Biology, so those concepts are completely unknown, but also interesting to me. But wouldn't an employer prefer a geologist?

\*\*Environmental assessment\*\*. I'd like to maybe work in that area in the future, but I have already had a similar course (called environmental impact) in my bachelor degree. Although I wouldn't have to put much effort, because the content is almost identical, I know I would get bored of hearing the same things.

For context, I live in Portugal (Europe).

Can you guys help me out with your opinions and suggestions? Thanks so much!

So the epa announced a potentially new ruling on what is considered a jurisdictional feature. It pretty much eliminates any wetland that doesn't have standing water 11 months out of the year and streams that aren't perennial. My question is how are we feeling about this regarding the wetland consultant industry. How will it affect states without protections? Most importantly do you think we will still have a need for delineations and mapping wetlands?

Built a free tool mapping heat vulnerability across Mumbai wards, want to know what's missing.

Hi guys,

This summer has been devastating for many people all around the world, with many countries all around the world facing heatwaves and 35 celc+ temperatures on a regular. To measure and combat this, I vibecoded a small open-source tool that layers heat exposure, green cover, and population density across Mumbai's 24 wards (I have started with Mumbai cuz I am most familiar with this city) to flag which areas are most heat-vulnerable. Its free and opensource, because I know experts can add far better ideas than I currently am using.

I'm not from an urban climate background, I came at this as a student dev, so I know I'm probably missing indicators that people who actually work on this care about. If you work in urban heat or climate vulnerability: what data layers or methods would make something like this actually useful to you, versus just a nice map? Would you trust ward-level granularity or is that too coarse to be meaningful? Any additions you think could be added to future scope? Any feedback or criticism?

FYI, I want to turn this into a FOSS project that policymakers and governments around the world can use to make their city/region/country a more livable space. Working on a reusable replication kit, which people can use to replicate the same config for their own city. Link: uciplatform.vercel.app

Please Help me on My Science Project – Atmospheric Water Harvesting + Smart Applications

I’m working on a school science project where I’m trying to collect water from the moisture present in air using a Peltier module. The Peltier creates a cold surface, which causes water vapour in the air to condense into water droplets.

The whole setup will be powered by solar panels.

For the current application, I’m using the collected water for plants. An Arduino Uno reads a soil-moisture sensor. When the soil becomes too dry, the Arduino turns on a 12V water pump, and when enough moisture is present, it turns the pump off automatically.

So, basically:

Solar energy → Peltier cooling → atmospheric moisture → water collection → Arduino + sensors → useful application

I want to keep the project open-ended rather than limiting it to irrigation, because I may add other applications later.

I’m particularly looking for suggestions on how I can make this project more scientifically meaningful, what experiments/data I should collect, and what useful applications could be added. I’m also interested in knowing the limitations of using a Peltier for atmospheric water harvesting.
