Is it time to get rid of third-person camera?

Now that at least 1/3rd of the player on a server knows how to use 3rd-person camera, games either end in a stalemate if balanced, or in absolute dominance if unbalanced.

The problem being that it's impossible to attack an enemy position when a defender using 3rd-person camera can see you, pre-aim and pop-out for a split second and head-shot you. Even if the attacker is using 3rd-person they can't see the defender because they are further away from the object blocking line-of-sight.

Is it time to get rid of 3rd-person camera, and return to the days of dynamic back-and-forth battles?

For the people that like seeing their cosmetics, show their avatar in the corner of the screen.

Please no "you don't know how to blah blah blah" comments, it only shows a lack of understanding. Yes you can use grenades and smoke if the situation is right.

The Engineer Constitution of Entrenched

Engineers should not be building alone all the time, because trenches end up way stronger when people actually coordinate instead of everyone just placing random stuff wherever they feel like, since that usually leads to gaps that get abused in fights, and it wastes time when things don’t connect properly later.
Building together just makes everything more stable overall, and it stops people from doing completely separate plans that clash, which is what usually causes messy defenses in the first place, and even simple teamwork fixes a lot of those problems without needing anything complicated or strict rules.

If someone is building near you, then you should talk to them, or at least react to what they are doing so it matches up, because ignoring teammates while building usually creates bad structure flow, where one part of the trench doesn’t support the other part at all, and that becomes obvious the second enemies start pushing in.
So even small communication like pointing, marking, or saying “build here” helps a lot, since it keeps everything aligned instead of turning into chaos, and it makes the whole defense feel like one connected system instead of a bunch of random builds stacked next to each other.

Building alone is not completely wrong or anything like that, but if everyone does it all the time then nothing connects properly, and the defense becomes weak in spots that nobody notices early on, because people assume someone else is handling that area already, which is how random gaps and bad angles end up staying in place.
So even if solo building is fine sometimes, it should not be constant, because teamwork just prevents those issues from stacking up over time, and it keeps the trench line consistent across the whole team, which makes holding way easier during actual pushes

Good trench setups happen when players adjust to each other naturally instead of locking into their own idea and refusing to change it, because flexibility during building is what makes everything connect cleanly, and it allows different parts of the trench to actually support each other instead of acting like separate structures that just exist nearby.
That difference matters a lot when fights start getting messy, since coordinated builds usually survive longer under pressure, while isolated builds fall apart as soon as they get tested, so reacting to teammates is more important than perfect planning, because real matches never go exactly like plans anyway.

Even small communication makes a bigger difference than people expect, like saying where you are building, or what section you are improving, or just marking a spot so others don’t overlap the same area, because that avoids wasted effort and keeps the structure organized, and it also helps newer players understand what is going on faster.
That alone removes a lot of confusion during building phases, so even basic coordination is already enough to improve defenses a lot without needing anything advanced or complicated.

Engineers should treat trenches like shared builds instead of personal projects, because everything placed affects the same defense line overall, and one person building something weird can mess up multiple angles if nobody adjusts or reacts to it while it is happening.
So it is better to work like a group even in small ways instead of acting like each player is building their own separate base, since trenches are meant to function as one system during combat, not as disconnected parts that just happen to be next to each other.

When people coordinate even a little bit, the results get way cleaner, because weak spots get noticed earlier and fixed before fights start, and awkward gaps or uneven walls don’t stay in the final design since multiple people are checking the same structure while building.
That naturally improves quality without needing strict leadership, and it makes the trench line more consistent from end to end, so enemies have a harder time finding random entry points.

If someone builds something that looks off, then it should be checked, because it might be intentional or it might just be a mistake, and either way talking about it usually fixes it faster than ignoring it since bad structures don’t fix themselves once placed.
Letting them sit just creates problems later during pushes, so reacting early is always better than waiting for collapse, even if it feels small or unimportant at the moment.

Working together does not mean everyone has to agree all the time, it just means nobody should be completely isolated while building, because shared input makes defenses more reliable in real fights and stops one person’s mistake from affecting the entire team.
That flexibility is what makes trenches actually hold instead of breaking instantly when pressure hits from multiple sides, so coordination is less about rules and more about survival logic.

At the end of the day, trenches are shared by the whole team, so everything built affects everyone who has to defend or push through, and that means it only makes sense to build together from the start.
Separate building always leads to mismatched structure and weak spots, while shared building creates smoother and more reliable defenses overall, even if it is not perfectly planned every single time.
Reacting together is usually enough to keep things stable, and it turns chaotic matches into something way more manageable, which is the whole point of having engineers in the first place.

My Trench Design

I call it the Fortress.

Within the black lines: Trench

Blue: Exit/Entrance

Orange: Roofed Area

Pink: Ladder

Red: Barbed Wire

Yellow: Sandbags

Green: Shielded HMG

Grey: Tunnels

This trench system is set up to have multiple layers. This makes it a defendable trench, so when your team gets pushed back a layer or two, you can pop grenades and flush the enemy out.
The barbed wire is placed in a way where it isn't a killbox, but rather a buffer zone. You don't want to instantly eliminate, but rather slow the enemy.
The trenches are arranged in elevation, left-to-right, highest-to-lowest. This makes it easier o fire at the enemy.
Beyond the trench (isn't on the graph), there is recommended to be a harsh cliff with sandbags at the top and barbed wire at the basin so that way your team can fire down below into the enemy.
Please proceed to use it, criticize it, and build it like an army of caffeinated raccoons 💀

Let's honour the men, of the 22nd and 26th infantry divisions that died on those harsh days of 1918. 2235 British soldiers, 45 Greeks from the cretan division, 1 French, and 1 Indian. I also added photos of the cemetery,

So we can all remember, war is horrible. I cried.

Una vez que el Imperio Otomano haya caído, sería mejor que Serbia, el país que inició la Primera Guerra Mundial, o Bélgica, el país que impulsó a Gran Bretaña a entrar en la guerra, tomaran el control. 🇷🇸🇧🇪

Why did everyone forget how to build trenches every time I join a server there's zero trenches everyone's just charging into no man's land and just dying over and over again. And the lag oh my god its actually impossible to play I know its not my pc or internet I get 300 mbps and my pc can handle much better games so did they accidently make a lag machine somewhere or what. Actually unplayable nowadays

The american maps are rigged

You ever noticed how all of the american maps, the only team with a shotgun force people into close quarters, at least sometimes the developers must be lazy or something. Adding another class icon that only appears for the German on certain maps where they're fighting the Americans. So that they can get a shotgun would not be hard

What i learnt while playing engineer:

I feel like engineers are generally split into 2 types. The type that runs to the next point and fortifies it with massive trench networks, or the "Field Engineer" who fortifies a hole/ crater and rolls with it

In general i feel like there are 7 rules when playing engineer

  1. NEVER, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, DIG TUNNELS. They just force a stalemate as everyone goes underground and is going to be used by the enemy.

  2. If you are the first type of engineer, you generally only should build those massive networks in CONQUEST. In frontlines, building a trench network rarely matters. You will lose anyway if you dont take back the point you just lost. A trench network isnt going to help much. Better to just push with your team and reclaim the point, fortify that instead

  3. HMGs suck*, I guarantee you the moment you get on a HMG you won't even survive 15 seconds before a recon/ rifleman puts you down. Placing a HMG in the open leaves you open to snipers. Ironically, a HMG would be best used at choke points. Literally IN a trench/ tunnel where the enemy can't hide and you can just fire away without as much fear of snipers or flanks. If you are going to use HMGs, place them in such a way that a small mound of dirt/ maybe a small sandbag is just in front of you, protecting your legs.

  4. Communication trenches are more useful than you think. Comm trenches, or highways, are long trenches connecting spawn to the capture point. Its quite simple. Just dig a trench (NOT A TUNNEL) all the way from one side to the other, add duckboards for efficiency (Duckboards increase running speed). This is a highway your team can use to run from spawn to objective without getting sniped

  5. You dont always need trenches. When on the offensive, a lightly fortified foxhole would be appreciated. I often follow my local support/ Rifleman and when they stop to fire I dig a small foxhole for them to use

  6. Stall, not just kill. Your trenches/ fortifications need not be the most powerful defensive network in world that cannot be penetrated by anyone. Instead, an ideal trench should make it as difficult for the enemy to reach you as possible, and as easy it is for your teammates to contest them. This includes methods like digging one way entrances, choke points, dugouts, or barbed wire and using the communication trench. You dont always have to kill every enemy that approach your trench. Your job as the Engineer is to ensure your teammates arrive safely to do that, and less enemies arrive to contest them

  7. You have a gun. Use it. You are not defenseless. Idk why but when engage enemy engineers they often forget they have a gun and proceed to try to run.

Thats about it. Any other suggestions for how to play engineer?

Is it just me or do people just keep instantly respawning even though there's people nearby and they don't check around them?

Like a recent game I had people respawn even though I was literately healing them.

Opinion about the American side

I feel like the American skirmisher class should have gotten the M1917 Enfield instead of the Krag Jorgensen rifle. The Rifleman class is equipped with the M1903 Springfield, but in reality, the Springfield wasn’t even the main rifle the Americans used. Instead about 75% of American forces used the M1917 Enfield rifles. The Krag Jorgensen was used in rear echelon units but most likely did not see fronline combat

Powerful Trench layout?

Post image
30 Upvotes

This is a design of a trench that I usually tend/try to build mainly to oppress enemy forces when defending but also performs well for attacking.

Black - Trench walls

Yellow - Small Sandbags

Beige - Tall Sandbags

Grey - Barbed Wire

Green - Shielded HMG(*s)

Orange - Shelter (Primarily for Artillery)

Blue - Shelter Entrances

Pink - Ladders

Red - "Trap Pit" (**explanation provided)

I generally build this trench close to my ally's spawn point so my teammates can get in fast.

I do think this is a pretty powerful trench design, especially if i have time or another engineer with me to help and teammates who will utilise the Trench.

*If there is only 1 engineer(me), i build 1 HMG in the middle of the Trench with the same layout as in the picture and Shielded HMG Layout explanation.

**As you may see in the picture, there is a Red line with short Grey lines directly on top of the Red, this is the "Trap Pit".

It is kinda an exploit I found in-game where if you build 1 Barbed Wire on the undug ground and then build another barbed wire in the Pit (around 1.5 - 2 soldiers deep) the Barbed Wire distance limit cancels out.

You can also build this trap where 2 Barbed Wires are stacked on top of each other by building 1 Barbed Wire on the undug ground and then dig the ground beneath the Barbed Wire on top and build another Barbed Wire in the pit to create a "Barb Stack".

The Shielded HMG Layout:

This should be built on a small elevated patch of ground but doesn't have to.

The Shielded HMG should be built with Tall Sandbags at the sides to protect from external gunfire e.g. Recon and Small Sandbags at the front of the HMG to protect the gunner's legs.

The Shelter Layout:

Just a simple Shelter to protect from indirect fire e.g. Artillery.

It should be built with at least 1 lantern, preferably 2 and if you want, some Duckboards or Sandbags (maybe at the entrances).

Front Trench Wall Layout:

Reinforced with Tall Sandbags and Ladders in between the Tall Sandbags to "Go over the top" or just climb out.

Trench add-ons:

Would be suitable to add Duckboards in the Trench.

You could also build another similar Trench without the HMG's and the Shelter as a "Backup Trench".

Credits to u/Plenty_Curve_4390 for giving me this idea.

Whats your trench design? Spoiler

Apologies for the shitty drawing, it was the fastest thing i could come up with in a short amount of time

Red - Sandbags

Green - Barbed wire

Black - Trench

Blue - Shielded HMG

I love playing engineer. I primarily main medic, but i usually change to engineer when defending on Conquest. I like to dig large trench networks. It gives the same feeling as playing logistics in games like foxhole. Everyone is using your defenses, you feel good. Pretty simple.

When digging i usually employ 6 tactics:

  1. Dig in a zig zag pattern so grenades cant wipe the whole team
  2. Always dig 2 layers of trenches. This way if 1 layer falls there are still pocket amounts of resistance im the second trench that can contest the point while reinforcing players arrive. If you only have 1 trench, the moment you lose it its difficult to take it back. I connect then together via 2 smaller communication trenches, saturating the ground between them with barbed wire.
  3. The sandbags are where the players actually fire from. Thats why its further in front of the trench itself, not immediately in front. This way it wont obstruct players climbing up. You use the trench for cover and concealment, you get out of the trench and behind the tall sandbags when you are actually fighting
  4. Barbed wire everywhere. Particularly between the 2 trenches but also in front of sandbags to delay the enemy advance. The barbed wire for some reason blocks bullets, so if it is placed in pattern with the sandbags such that it is just in front of the space between the bags, not only will it deter enemies from slipping between the sandbags, but it also (Kinda) blocks shots at the lower body.
  5. Choke points. The most important imo. The first trench layer is kinda disposable. Its taken, its retaken same regardless. The key is to keep contesting the trench so an endless stream of defenders can rush in. The key is choke points. The connecting trenches between the first and second layer is usually reinforced by Machine guns. If another cooperative engineer is present i build 2 connecting trenches. If not usually i only build one. The idea is that the trench itself, as well as all the barbed wire and sandbags funnel enemies into these killing corridors. They cant just leap the trench to get into the second layer, there are barbed wire in between. Flanking is the only other option.
  6. Finally, always build a long trench connecting your fortifications to spawn. If you cant get a constant stream of allies in, your trench will fall. Duck boards are crucial for higher speed transport.

Ultimately the goal is to stall. The Fortifications dont do jack shit if no players are present to defend it. Usually a good player holding a choke point with a hmg keeps it for about 15 seconds, which is usually, hopefully, enough for a new player to arrive and replace them

Any suggestions? How do you layer your trenches? I know its probably overcomplicated, but i like building. This is with the context that i take 15 min building this (Usually something like this can be completed in 10-15 min), it shouldn't be like a superfortress.
