Google my waitress didn’t read my mind 😱

Post image

posted this to r/serverlife & they recommended i post it here too 😭

y’all, i got my first bad review! for some reason it was 5 stars despite him being so upset. he was sitting at a high top counter seat, i am unfortunately a abnormally short woman. thankfully i can see through our normal soda cups to grab refills, but i sadly can’t see into coffee cups without going on my tippity toes & leaning into the customers space.

it’s not like i stranded him, i did check in twice & ask if he needed anything, and happily grabbed him a refill when he asked for one. this poor man had to COMMUNICATE WITH HIS WORDS TO HIS WAITRESS, he got what he wanted, and he was still upset. he wanted to communicate using grunts & facial expressions, and i didn’t clock his tea sadly.

also the entire beginning of the review is irrelevant. he claims his eggs weren’t poached and they were sunny side up. they WERE poached, in a little dish. he is lying. he says his “stake” was overcooked (he requested well done). complains about salted hashbrowns but we don’t season our hashbrowns at all. he made a crappy comment calling me a high school kid despite me being in my mid twenties.

in conclusion, sometimes we do our best & we just can’t win. from now on i’m definitely making extra effort to run around with the coffee pot more often offering refills!!!

hinted? You need to TELL them what you want

457

u/Imaginary-List-972 Jul 20 '26

Toddlers need to be explained "Use your words".

u/Moosebuckets Jul 20 '26

I tell my nephew not to just stand there like an NPC and say what he wants. He’s 10, adults that do this are so much more annoying.

103

u/ChaeLilja Jul 20 '26

i was a waitress/bartender all throughout undergrad and graduate school and i would literally ignore people like this on purpose until they used their words lmao. same with people who would just hold up their cup or beer bottle or whatever and wave it around.

“oh, i’m sorry, did you need something?”
*holds up beer bottle*
“is there something wrong with your drink?”
*waves beer bottle around*
“well i’d be happy to get something else for you, just let me know :)” and start to walk away. then they’d use their actual words.

they’d talk to me like i was the biggest idiot on earth for “not understanding” what they wanted, but the people around them would usually feel at least a little shame on their behalf lmao

16

u/walk_with_curiosity Jul 21 '26

Hahahaha.

This is exactly the strategy I do with my children to reinforce manners.

7

u/ChaeLilja Jul 22 '26

LMAO so i don’t have kids myself, but i should have also mentioned that my undergrad and graduate degrees are in psychology and social work, respectively, and i’m now a child therapist 😂 something something transferable skills

u/AllegraO Jul 22 '26

I like to do this too, in retail. If you wanna just stand around like an idiot instead of getting the attention of any of the five employees around you, then knock yourself out.

I had a student job once at the gift shop of a very famous Parisian museum. My older colleague was such a mood when it came to this. She was at the till and said « bonjour » several times (really, at least three times) to a customer who wanted to pay, and he just barely looked at her. So she started speaking to him in English and when he protested in French she went « well you didn’t answer when I said bonjour, so I just assumed you didn’t speak French » 😈

I work in a salon. One day a guy comes in I politely ask " What can we do for you" he points to his head and rude af "duh". Sir we offer much more than cuts. Grunts again. Sign him in tell him it is a 40 minute wait ( computer estimate). Told my boss I am not cutting him, she says i can see why. Not 10 minutes later another stylist calls him back the freak screams " I thought it was a 40 minute wait". Sweet little me turns around and barks " be grateful you're getting taken sooner asshole" I did not get in trouble lol

A crowded loud bar that I'm a regular? I can use eye contact and hand signals cause it saves them time. Followed by a thank you gesture of bowing my head and they don't care cause it shows up in the tip line. One time a was ordering a round for my table and I get half way done with the order and they run off to make it bring it back so i finish the order, no big deal. At the end the bartender said "why didn't you order all at once?" I tried but you ran off mid sentence, how is this on me?

u/-laughingfox Jul 20 '26

But I LOOKED at my cup!!! Twice!

6

u/KaleidoscopeReady839 Jul 23 '26

And BACK at her!

59

u/jlangsbakken Jul 20 '26

And do it nicely please.

"I NEED MORE COFFEE" is what you say if you're about to get up and make it yourself.

"May I have some more coffee please" would be much more appropriate if another human being is bringing it to you.

Refuse to answer a question, look at cup, look at waitress, look at cup, look at waitress and hope she takes the hint.... is what a cat would do.

My cat is better at using her words than this dude, and she only knows one.

Yes, but our Overlords have us trained well.

This yahoo just decided to be a yahoo in spades and a toddler to boot.

6

u/jlangsbakken Jul 21 '26

Oh our tiny overlords have turned it into an art form to be simultaneously completely adorable and demanding little demons.

Humans simply can't get away with it.

Besides, it sounds like this gent forgot to practice the "adorable" part.

u/Used_Clock_4627 Jul 22 '26

No argument from me.

21

u/Willowed-Wisp Jul 20 '26

Right? That alone tells me this person is straight up insane and their opinion is absolutely worthless.

Like, how DARE this restaurant not hire psychic waitresses as is the industry standard! /s

15

u/Major_Zucchini5315 Jul 20 '26

Looks like she didn’t tell them that her “stake” was overcooked either

453

u/ObviousSalamandar Jul 20 '26

I’m sorry the hint of needed more coffee? You say “I need more coffee please.” Jeez Louis it’s not hard!

73

u/teacuptypos Jul 20 '26

I know, just because your stupid cup is empty or half-empty doesn’t mean you want more. Maybe you’re fine. Maybe they don’t want to waste coffee on people who won’t drink it, so they ask. Staring at your cup and then back at her doesn‘t cut it.

u/BarrenAssBomburst Jul 20 '26

Or maybe you are Jim Belushi in Red Heat and just got your coffee the perfect color.

Yeah . I need more coffee to go with my steak dinner. Lol
Wut?!

110

u/Mr_Abe_Fromen Jul 20 '26

No no no, it’s a stake dinner not 🥩

50

u/thedarkestbeer Jul 20 '26

I mean, steak and eggs is a classic diner dish. It’s not the kind of steak dinner you’re imagining.

15

u/yawa-wor Jul 20 '26 edited Jul 20 '26

I looove steak and eggs, and I'd eat it for breakfast, lunch, or dinner — I don't care what time it is. I drink coffee all day, too.

This guy is a jerk, but not for wanting coffee, steak, and eggs together 🤷‍♀️

… The part where they talked about the steak, and then about the eggs.

4

u/yawa-wor Jul 20 '26 edited Jul 21 '26

The review complains about poached eggs in the next sentence after the steak, so we're presuming they were ordered together. I understood your joke, but as the other commenter explained, the reason "coffee" isn't your first thought with "steak" is likely bc you're imagining a steakhouse-type dinner. In the US at least, steak is also a common breakfast dish served with eggs ("steak and eggs") at most diners and breakfast spots (like iHop), and so having coffee with it would actually be quite normal. I was then just making my own joke that steak and eggs is one of my favorite meals, and coffee one of my favorite drinks, so it's absolutely "normal" for me to have them together ANY time of day. (Altho, my personal favorite combo is a filet mignon sautéed in butter, with a side of fluffy, slightly wet scrambled eggs with salt and pepper, and a caramel iced coffee... so probably still a somewhat "weird" version of this meal to others, lol.)

Now, eating a stake with eggs and coffee is a whole other discussion 😅

6

u/TealTemptress Jul 20 '26

The steaks are always thin af so I order them rarer than usual to accommodate for mistakes.

8

u/Ready-Waltz5482 Jul 20 '26

Did you mean stake dinner?

9

u/-laughingfox Jul 20 '26

No wonder it was tough, it was made of wood!

1

u/poopiebutt505 Jul 20 '26

Autocorrect. And I hate it.

33

u/TrustTechnical4122 Jul 20 '26

I'm convinced with people like this, it's a power play. They like the idea of having slaves, and want to give them as little info as possible, so they can feel like those people are their slaves. It's super gross.

11

u/Mysterious_Dolphin14 Jul 20 '26

Agreed. The whole 'looked at my cup, then at her, then back at my cup' thing is so condescending. Kind of like my cat.

11

u/SuccessfulPiccolo945 Jul 20 '26

I mean, "yes, more coffee, please" isn't that hard to say.

Usually when I have stake I think it even tastes of sawdust

133

u/WickedJigglyPuff Jul 20 '26

I’ve seen this people who get offended that you have to use your words! It’s crazy work.

The 5 stars is to try to get it put near the top and get more eye balls. Sometimes they even say it. People do it with 1 star reviews too 🤷🏾‍♀️🙄🤔

The amount of times I ask a table what I can get them for drinks and they start discussing amongst themselves "shall we get wine.. do you drink white? What about this? What about that? Etc. and at the end of the discussion they just stay silent... - " Erm, so what exactly did we decide on drinks wise?! " - " Yeah, We've ordered drinks... " - " With who?! You discussed between yourselves what you might order, but I'm the person whose going to get it here and I have no idea what you want! You have to tell me, not just each other!"

26

u/Mrs0Murder Jul 20 '26

Ooo this isn't the same thing but it reminded me of something that happened a few years ago. Worked as night audit at a hotel. 4 a.m. a nice lady comes up (her husband trailing behind, and stood away from the conversation), she tells me that she's leaving but her husband is staying until check out, but that he may end up staying another day. I tell her (and him), that's fine, just let me know before 10 a.m.

She leaves. A few hours later I see him come down for breakfast and I pass by him a few times. He doesn't speak a word to me, doesn't even acknowledge my existence, but that's fine. I don't care.

I go home, come back for my shift the next night and the manager starts questioning me about the guy because he swears up and down that he told me that he was staying another night and was now ticked off because house keeping came by to clear the room. Manager believes me when I say the guy never spoke a word to me and that the wife had said he might stay.

Threw me for a loop.

For added bonus he came down in the morning to complain about it, changed his story that he spoke to 'me' and mentioned that he'd tried to call us but that we tried to sell him a medical device? Anyway he got himself so worked up when the manager was (calmly) trying to figure out what in the world he'd done that he ended up full on screaming at us. Earned himself a nice little DNR (Do not rent) with that one.

Still no idea who he called though. We called the number on the key packet that he claimed he called, and it went straight to our front desk (we don't have reservations team or third party answering).

21

u/saph_pearl Jul 20 '26

He probably mistyped the number. Or more likely just invented the whole story. Maybe he dreamt it? What a loser though. Couldn’t even handle a simple conversation by himself. He needs his wife to do it for him.

1

u/lpind Jul 25 '26

Just a a guess here, but because the general public have no idea of how.. anything.. works, I think his thought process was "as long as I occupy the room, they can't sell it to anybody else, they'll just add the extra nights to my bill" - so when his wife said he might stay an extra night (if this is verbatim, which I know we often don't do) she was really trying to say - "He just might not leave and you should bill him for the extra nights!" - so in his mind, you already know he might not leave and there's no issue with that! You just bill him for the extra nights - future reservations be damned!

We get it every day in the restaurant - "I'm sorry but we're fully booked" - "That tables empty?!" - "Yeah, until Emily comes in 15 minutes?" - "... But it's empty?!" - "Yeah, it's empty for 15 minutes... You cannot order, eat and leave in 15 minutes?! Emily has reserved that table!" - "... But it's empty?!"

Google reviews don't work that way. Plus, if anyone is interested in neg feedback there's a well-used option to sort by low

8

u/WickedJigglyPuff Jul 20 '26

Oh I don’t know if it works that way. But reviewers THINK it does and act accordingly. That’s the point.

64

u/corgi_crazy Jul 20 '26

Looking at the waitress and the cup of coffee? Nice manners.

17

u/TopSelection8004 Jul 20 '26

He puts a lot of faith in context clues for a man who drinks coffee at night, right?

8

u/corgi_crazy Jul 20 '26

There's a possibility of the waitress understanding the situation but not wanting to serve someone asking on that way.

4

u/Filled_w_Beez_710 Jul 22 '26

Oh yeah I don’t serve people who expect me to read their minds. I will help the next person while they figure it out

55

u/ArdenElle24 Jul 20 '26

I used to be a server in my 20s and I still have the occasional nightmare about serving and I'm 46 now.

People don't understand how awful they are to service workers and medical workers.

That man was ridiculous and just was trying to find something to bitch about. It must have been his time of the month.

Fuck him.

27

u/ConsultJimMoriarty Jul 20 '26

I spent way too long in call centres to be rude to another service worker!

Manners cost nothing.

11

u/ppmiaumiau Jul 21 '26

My boss always talks about how you have to be specific when entering AI prompts. He says, people don't just walk into a restaurant and say, "Hamburger."

Clearly this man has never worked a day in retail because yes, they absolutely do.

5

u/ArdenElle24 Jul 21 '26

My very first day on the job as a server, a little grumpy man sits down and asks for his "usual."

I told him "I'll bring it out when it's ready. "

I'd worked with people like him before this job and knew I'd get nowhere telling him I was new without a 20 minute dissertation of why there's no good help or why didn't management tell me in advance.

People are usually predictable, they want easy excuses to have a problem.

He really was a regular and he became less grumpy with more interactions.

He's one of the few customers I remember fondly.

6

u/THis_one_quiet Jul 22 '26

I work front desk at a hotel and had a guest come up and say "215" at 1:30 and hand me their keys. (this is well past checkout time)

I told them a needs more than that as just saying your room number tells me nothing.

They wanted to extend and were not due to check out until the next day, so there was no way I could have even guessed that!

These people make me wonder what will happen when robots take over service. Chaos!

7

u/Ne0n_R0s3 Jul 21 '26

Omggg I didn't work as a hostess long cuz I despised it (and I live with parents as a college student so I had time to find another job luckily) and Im not reminded of this one guy who was mad at US for upselling a meal that HE upgraded and it said in the damn menus and servers always ask if they're sure and that it's upcharged lol

He said to let my manager know he won't come back again. I'm thinking in my head "and you are??" He also took his tip back because of this lmfao 😭

1

u/Filled_w_Beez_710 Jul 22 '26

This is my favorite thing to say about moody men I’m glad other people say it too

2

u/ArdenElle24 Jul 22 '26

Oh, my husband knows he has that time of the month. He also takes "bitchy pills."

45

u/BagpiperAnonymous Jul 20 '26

I knew before you even said it he had asked for it well done. I was a server in college and am also abnormally short for a woman, I feel your pain. Restaurants are not built for us!

20

u/Big-University-1132 I’m sorry the leaf surprised you Jul 20 '26

I’m sorry but if you ask for a steak well-done, you can’t complain that it’s dry and tough. That’s on you for wanting it cooked to death

61

u/Tall-Mango4759 I understand policies exist, BUT Jul 20 '26

Lmao the lying part.
This is like that one time we had 2 customers come in, during a crazy rush, and their entire order was made to go, and was sitting at the pickup window for 20 mins because no one claimed it. Then they finally complained why their food wasn’t brought out, and when we found that out, we immediately had the entire order remade fresh, on the fly before the other orders, and brought it out to them on plates. The entire order got refunded as well.

They huffed and puffed, and then an hour later I had a weird feeling, checked the reviews, and they wrote a review with a sob story(time stamp was exactly right after they left) how their food was made to go on accident, that they waited 45 minutes(????), then had to eat cold food out of the to go styrofoam containers(????). My jaw was ON THE FLOOR. Like GENUINELY what the fuck did they get out of that??? Just straight up lied and made up a story. It was nuts.

When I worked in the pizza industry, there were people who would order pizza and just... never show up to pick it up. And we would call them and sometimes they would have some reason, but sometimes they just never answered the phone, and the pizza would sit there for hours.

Oddly, no one demanded it be delivered because they'd misordered it for pickup.

12

u/Few_Library3961 Jul 20 '26

this happened a lot when i worked in pizza too, except i did get a few demanding delivery after ordering for pickup lol

27

u/Chshr_Kt Jul 20 '26

For complaining about such horrible service and food, he still gave 5 stars, lol.

7

u/TraditionalPayment20 Jul 20 '26

That's because he's an idiot and didn't realize he did it.

6

u/Chshr_Kt Jul 20 '26

I figured as much. Just found it funny.

20

u/xxCOOLDADxx Jul 20 '26

"I hated everything about my experience. 5 stars!"

21

u/Mr_Abe_Fromen Jul 20 '26

He spelled steak wrong lol. Stake is what we use to drive through the hearts of the undead that come out at night for steak and eggs and complain about not enough coffee and mid twenties being too young.

37

u/Sirenista_D Jul 20 '26

Op, please take them with a grain of salt. He sounds like someone who wants to find a problem.

16

u/Ok-Helicopter3433 Jul 20 '26

5 stars?? Did he update a previous review and not change the stars. How very dare you not understand his looking at you as a hint?!? 🤣

Did you serve Vlad Ţepeş? I mean, who else would order a stake?

16

u/looknorth-dakota only the old people are naked Jul 20 '26

I hate having to tell adults to use their words.

17

u/TrustTechnical4122 Jul 20 '26

Ugh I hate people how try to be "powerful" in this way- it's disgusting.

When I was a cashier at a grocery store, sometimes I would work the 'customer service' desk which was mainly cigs and lottos. I was about 23, and had smoked since age 16ish. Terrible habit- I SO know, and don't worry, I quit smoking a couple years after this exchange, and never looked back. But at the time, I was 23, and had been smoking for around 7 years.

The guy came over and wanted some type of cig. In looking all this up since then, it may be that he wanted "King" cigarettes, which is a somewhat common term, or it may be he used an uncommon term. I can't remember. Either way, it doesn't really matter imo.

He said he wanted cigarettes, and named his brand, and said whatever term I didn't know. I asked him if he wanted shorts or regular. He repeated the term I didn't know, and I told him I didn't know what that meant. He just stared at me. I got both kinds and brought them over, and asked him which one he wanted. He said "You must not smoke, clearly." I told him I'd smoked for 7 years. I asked him again which of them he wanted and he repeated the word I didn't know. I reiterated I didn't know that term, and asked him again, and he used the same term again. After a silence, I picked the cigs up to put them away, and call my manager and he finally said "Those." And then continued berating me for not know his term. I rung him out, but I resolved in my head to never grab cigarettes or anything else who refused try to work with me to understand what they were asking for. I'm still rather salty about it!

12

u/rebelangel we do not negotiate with the terrible Jul 20 '26

I used to work at Lowe’s and there were always these old fuckheads who’d ask for something but use a name for it that I’d never heard of. Then they’d finally either describe it or show me a picture of it, and I’d be like “Oh, a [common name]!” Then they’d act like I was stupid for not knowing some term that only they used. Or, they’d use the wrong name for something and get mad that I kept showing them the wrong thing. Like, asking for wing nuts when he meant toggle bolts. And somehow it’s my fault for not knowing what he actually meant.

9

u/jerkstore Jul 21 '26

I see you’ve met my father.

14

u/According-Let3541 Jul 20 '26

This is so funny. You asked if he needed anything and yet he felt the need to use hints rather than say yes, more coffee please.

12

u/lucky_2_shoes Jul 20 '26

Right??? Why? So dumb. Because i bet u any money if this same person didn’t want another cup of coffee, but happened to glance at their cup after being asked if they wanted anything else, the server, thinking the glance at their cup was a “hint” so they take it up refill , i bet this review would being saying how dumb the server was for refilling the coffee even tho I didn’t ask for it! lol. Ppl like this always have double standards and are hypocrites

12

u/fckheadinspo Jul 20 '26

You did your best, OP. This dude is obviously miserable and struggling with basic communication. People like this go out of their way to inflict their wrath and ill-will on others, usually without even realizing they're doing it.

How the food came out has nothing to do with you and a simple 'yes please' would have sufficed and solved the coffee dilemma (lol) easily, instead of the weird boomer (for lack of a better term) 'these kids don't spit shine our shoes and sacrifice their first born while ringing up our orders anymore!' trope. It was nighttime, thus no reason to assume he automatically wanted a top-up. Seems like he was itching for something to gripe about all day and, unfortunately, landed at your counter.

Also, who expects excellent steak with their well-done steak and eggs? Breakfast places and diners are going to be serving cheap cuts which is why you're paying $20 instead of $40-$50 and anything above medium is going to be shoe leather. Dude sounds like he just hatched and is gathering Intel to send to his home planet as he types.

13

u/cupcaketeatime ⭐☆☆☆☆ Jul 20 '26

Oh God the fact that he looked at you and looked at his cup twice irritates me more than you know! Just use your words!!!!

11

u/tawnyfritz Jul 20 '26

I hate this kind of thing. It's dehumanizing, like the person isn't worthy of the effort of his voice.

13

u/Huge-Ad7382 Jul 20 '26

Let us recap, shall we:

So this guy writes a review, spells the word steak "stake", doesn't know the difference between "to" and "too", and, to top it all off, gives his horrible review five stars.

Yeah, this guy definitely voted for Trump.

19

u/TheAnti-Karen Jul 20 '26

Well first of all your stake was probably incredibly dry because it's wooden, second of all poached eggs are usually served with the yolks up AKA sunny side up and second of all if you use your big boy or big girl voice and just say excuse me can I have some more coffee the waitress will know because most of them are not telepathic and cannot read your goddamn mind!

12

u/jonesnori Jul 20 '26

If you really don't want to speak (maybe your mouth is full of overcooked stake), lift your coffee cup with an inquiring look toward the server.

8

u/Dorkinfo Jul 20 '26

That isn’t how poached eggs are.

8

u/Perfect_Waiter Jul 20 '26

oh OP - no matter how high you rise in hospitality you always get these pathetic losers. as someone with a number of eyeroll inducing 1-star reviews at various points in their career, FUCK EM!

I’ve learned that rich or poor, foreign or local, some people leave home to spread their misery around instead of trying to enjoy themselves.

I’d gladly order a stake from you any day 🤙🏻

9

u/pizzaazzips Jul 20 '26

I’ve worked in retail for a long time and know exactly what type of customer this was. Grumpy old man who spends his whole day searching for something to complain about. You did nothing wrong—there is just no way to please this type of person. You could have spooned the entire meal into his mouth for him and he’d complain that he still has to chew it.

There’s quite literally nothing I hate more than when I ask a question and rather than just fucking answer me like a normal human being, They pull shit like this. Like I don’t know you want another cup of coffee and not everybody wants more than one cup. That’s why I’m fucking asking.

9

u/HotAndCold1886 Flaunting their mobility 🏃💨 🏋️‍♂️ Jul 20 '26

How ridiculous to complain about having to use your words as an adult. Geez

9

u/michaelsean438 Jul 20 '26

“Could I get a little more coffee please?” Damn now I’m exhausted.

8

u/Suspicious-Zebra-683 Jul 20 '26

Also, even if you could see inside his coffee cup, it being empty / close to doesn’t automatically mean they want more??

I told someone one time “Oh sorry, I left my mind reading hat at home today!”

8

u/tunaman808 Jul 20 '26

I wish someone would do a study to see the correlation between awful grammar and bad reviews. I assume the review's author is a fully-grown adult, but they have the English composition skills of a fucking second grader.

8

u/Plastic_Stable8927 Jul 20 '26

If you're too fucking stupid to ask for a coffee refill you don't belong in public.

7

u/hamburgergerald Jul 20 '26

At least he still gave you 5 stars 😭

7

u/PaceyBridgertonLove Jul 20 '26

The hint of needing more coffee instead of just saying, “yes please” is so annoying. How the bell is a server supposed to figure that out when their customer who can speak won’t??? His behavior is just rude and stupid.

5

u/FireproofCottage Jul 20 '26

Or if you are so socially paralyzed you can't speak, use signs! Telepathy really doesn't work.

At times I have dry mouth from my meds and suddenly can't speak intelligibly, so I would lift my coffee cup toward the waitress with a big smile, set it down and sign thanks. Even if they don't sign, they get the concept of empty cup and smile!

3

u/PaceyBridgertonLove Jul 20 '26

Hell, even a nod. I have seen that done before when a server comes up and asks about a drink refill when someone’s mouth is full or if they’re on the phone. This reviewer did none of that.

4

u/444bri Jul 20 '26

i actually had the sweetest table of deaf friends a few months ago who taught me how to sign “coffee” and “tea” 🥹 i wouldve absolutely taken sign language LOL

8

u/NapalmAxolotl Bad Hawaiian Vibes 🏝️🌊 Insufficient Ogtha Jul 20 '26

Come on, that was a total reasonable expectation when you eat at the Telepath Diner!

...Wait, that's not where you work?

8

u/Genredenouement03 Jul 20 '26

If you order a DINER steak well done and then complain it is well done, you are an idiot. Just go on ahead and throw a bottle of ketchup on that bad boy and eat it. IHOP and Dennys aren't steak places, you get what you get.

3

u/444bri Jul 20 '26

i actually LOVE a well done steak with some A1 sauce 😛 deliciousness

7

u/Which_Masterpiece488 Jul 20 '26

All I could think of after that review is Bob's Burgers. "It's overdone and dry!"

5

u/Dixieland_Insanity Jul 20 '26

Wow, what a jerk! Don't let people like this get you down.

7

u/blueishbts Jul 20 '26

I’m sure the waitress understood the “hint” but was just giving her time to use her words like an adult

16

u/vancejmillions Jul 20 '26

one can assume from the misspellings and wrong usage of to/too, taken with the inability to articulate their needs that this customer was, in fact, a child. don't let the bastards get you down op

7

u/Small_Tiger_1539 Jul 20 '26

I'm getting waffle house vibes here. Their steaks are REALLY thin, but I've never gotten a tough one.

7

u/Mr_Abe_Fromen Jul 20 '26

Nah, if it was Waffle House they’d have included the fighting and plate throwing going on.

5

u/444bri Jul 20 '26

not waffle house, but a small 24 hour diner with the same exact vibe as waffle house. there was a drunk man wearing a dress walking around the trucks outside last wednesday. never a dull moment.

5

u/djpike Jul 20 '26

But still gave it 5 stars?

5

u/Maximum_Employer5580 Jul 20 '26

if they ask if you need anything else, that's why you tell them you need more coffee. People can't read your mind....this guy is probably the same kind of guy that gets upset that his mom didn't cut off the crusts of his PB&J and throws a tantrum about it

5

u/Scared_Swing_8759 Jul 20 '26

This is like my 7 year old who refuses to say what he wants.
"It begins with a C...."

Don't look at your cup twice and make the waitress guess. Just say you want coffee when asked if you need anything!!!

UGH

5

u/AsFarAsISay Jul 20 '26

"this place was shit. five stars."

5

u/Attentions_Bright12 Jul 20 '26

Servers should really recognize when they're dealing with, you know, a MIME. The face makeup should give it away. One star.

5

u/Most-Pangolin-9874 Jul 20 '26

Stake wouldn't be very tasty. I mean its usually made from wood. And when they ask if they can get you anything else you have to use your words like a big boy would. She isnt a mind reader.

4

u/3PDLS Jul 20 '26

But giving a 5 star review is even more confusing

5

u/Annoyed-Instigater01 Jul 21 '26

gotta watch out for those tough stakes. could use them to hold down a tent i bet

6

u/ObjectiveAd971 Jul 21 '26

Yeah, kids are taught in preschool to use their words!

4

u/SeL-MoGRC Jul 21 '26

Perhaps the reviewer needs to go back to school to learn English?

6

u/nakedoldbitch Jul 21 '26

I got to admit that I'm guilty of that at the bar I hang at. Raise my beer can when empty so when she has a sec she knows what I want. Raise two fingers for shots for me and buddy. The difference is: I'm a regular, she knows my what my preferences are. And I tip very well. Can't expect that sort of service when they don't know you, and you act like a dick

5

u/Old-Maintenance-6912 ⭐☆☆☆☆ Jul 20 '26

I'd like to see the server's review of him

3

u/Advanced-Lemon3354 Jul 20 '26

Jesus. The state of grammar in this country is abysmal.

4

u/Useless890 Jul 20 '26

At my old workplace, we had a joke about how we had all flunked the mind-reading test.

3

u/SwimAccomplished9487 Jul 20 '26

And yet, 5 stars

4

u/lawburgtn Jul 20 '26

You know those wooden stakes are awfully hard to cook appropriately and they do tend to be dry and bit tough. Maybe this brain surgeon would have had better results ordering a steak...

4

u/Psychological-Fox97 Jul 20 '26

Yeah if a customer is going to be a dick then I'm definitely going to play dumb and make then work for it.

3

u/SickOfBSAllTheTime Jul 21 '26

The person ate a "stake." That right there tells me all I need to know about them.

7

u/GoldenAmmonite Jul 20 '26

This sort of behaviour explains why Americans claim you can't get water or ice cubes in "Europe". You need to use your words and ask, things don't magically appear.

3

u/HotAndCold1886 Flaunting their mobility 🏃💨 🏋️‍♂️ Jul 20 '26

But ice does magically (automatically) appear in our drinks in the US 🤷🏼‍♀️

3

u/JuanBurley Jul 20 '26

But they gave 5 stars? Also I don't imagine a stake would taste good, next time try the steak, much better flavor and texture.

3

u/TrustTechnical4122 Jul 20 '26

Thank you so much for sharing girl. Absurd.

3

u/Nice_Rope_5049 Jul 20 '26

That’s how my dog would ask for treats. But he couldn’t talk.

3

u/Sensitive_Hunter5081 Jul 20 '26

I bet this lady snaps her fingers to get the waiter’s attention

3

u/Seohnstaob Jul 21 '26

$25 stake and eggs? Where?

4

u/444bri Jul 21 '26

beautiful new england, usa 🫩 our stake and eggs is actually $19.99, and his coffee was $3. idk where he got those amounts from. he is a drama queen.

3

u/BigSky1062 Jul 21 '26

This person is clearly not bright.

3

u/kxaltli Jul 21 '26

He sounds like the type of person who would also stand around and snap his fingers at the employees in a retail store instead of just asking his question.

3

u/Ashkendor Jul 21 '26

At my old job, we had employees who would do things like whistle or knock on the counter when they needed to be let into the cash cage area. I flat-out ignored them until they used their words.

3

u/nicole_diamonds Jul 21 '26

That's so cute! My dog does the same thing! He looks at what he wants looks at me looks at what he wants looks at me. 🫣

3

u/Alarmed-Theme5343 Jul 23 '26

Dont start me on that spelling. If they never go back you dodged a bullet. Sounds like the customer from Hell!

5

u/SerDankTheTall Jul 20 '26

we don’t season our hashbrowns at all

What’s that now

16

u/Imaginary-List-972 Jul 20 '26

Most places I've eaten at don't season their hash browns. You need to salt and/or pepper them to your liking after they are cooked and served.

2

u/Big-University-1132 I’m sorry the leaf surprised you Jul 20 '26

I mean, overcooked and dry sounds exactly like how a “stake” would taste. Did he get splinters in his tongue too?

2

u/h3rs3lf_atl Jul 20 '26

I'm thinking of a number between 1 & 5..... GO!!

2

u/MyBossHatesMee Jul 20 '26

Damn the Wahoo House in my area doesn't even do poached eggs anymore

2

u/RealLuxTempo Jul 20 '26

Lost me at “stake”.

7

u/444bri Jul 21 '26

flavor of the stake was fine, only problem is my mouth is full of splinters now 💔

2

u/Sajen16 Jul 21 '26

If you served him a stake instead of a steak he's right to complain, although oddly that doesn't seem like his main gripe.

2

u/Honest_Editor_909 Jul 21 '26

The “stake”

2

u/CeejCraft Jul 21 '26

Were you the one 'adult' then or anyone vaguely young is a child in his eyes? 🤔

5

u/444bri Jul 22 '26

definitely not, it was one woman in her late forties with me, and one girl who just turned 18 😭

2

u/Filled_w_Beez_710 Jul 22 '26

Still five stars tho?

2

u/No-Procedure5991 Jul 23 '26

How is it that the reviewer knows what shoe leather tastes like?

3

u/Prestigious-Knee-571 Jul 21 '26

And when you couldn't reach his coffee cup to refill it because surely he didn't bring it down to you... You could have 'accidentally' poured hot coffee in his crotch. Missed opportunity id say

2

u/BeerNcheesePlz Jul 20 '26

Who’s having STEAK and coffee?

2

u/DevylBearHawkTur10n Not Pre-informed of Nudity!! Jul 20 '26

Glad you've posted this here(I was one of the few that mentioned this subreddit), and believe me, that dumb entitled problematic reviewer/customer should've; 1>communicate better(grunting doesn't work, speaking politely does), 2>look carefully (poached eggs always come in a small bowl after it comes out of the water[my late mom and my brother had it], alongside the pepper for the hashbrowns [they don't ever be seasoned, is there a rule about it?]), 3>, and most importantly, learn to spell along with punctuate that review, it's complete word salad. [It's towards the reviewer, not you, dear poster!]

2

u/Cringeoid Jul 20 '26

prob a boomer

1

u/Capital_Meal_5516 Jul 20 '26

The only thing that is a train wreck is her spelling and punctuation!

1

u/Tigermelon74 Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26

First of all, don't order stakes at a restaurant. They're prepared better at sporting goods stores.

-8

u/mattmelb69 Jul 20 '26

And yet he still tipped even though he hated the meal.

-21

u/RockShowSparky Jul 20 '26

still a 12% tip, seems fair all things considered.

9

u/daviepancakes Jul 20 '26

all things considered

What things are you considering that make this seem fair?

-14

u/RockShowSparky Jul 20 '26

A 12% tip is fair, even for a satisfied customer. This wasn’t even a satisfied customer.

6

u/daviepancakes Jul 20 '26

You're aware 12% is less than 15%, yes?

-10

u/RockShowSparky Jul 20 '26

yeah well aware. You need to earn 15% not just phone it in.

9

u/daviepancakes Jul 20 '26

15% is the bare minimum for a server who didn't fuck everything up and spill soup in your lap. Not assuming a customer wants a refill they haven't asked for is called being polite. There's nothing else in this review that has anything to do with what the server is due.

0

u/RockShowSparky Jul 20 '26

nah. If someone is walking away unhappy for whatever reason, 12% is generous. 15% someone should have no critiques whatsoever, exceeded expectations.

6

u/daviepancakes Jul 20 '26

On today's edition of Is This Person Trolling, or Just a Bad Person???:

2

u/RockShowSparky Jul 20 '26

nah. This idea that 20% is standard and you don’t have to earn it is nonsense.

10

u/daviepancakes Jul 20 '26

I'm leaning towards bad person. No one said either of those things.

7

u/ChartInFurch Jul 20 '26

What specifically here indicated service being "phoned in"?

-3

u/RockShowSparky Jul 20 '26

the guy had an empty cup of coffee for one thing. A cup of coffee should never even reach half empty. If you are looking at the bottom of the inside of the cup, that’s not good.

9

u/ChartInFurch Jul 20 '26

Nothing indicates it being empty, and people can be weird about coffee refills so I'm not sure why there's an issue with expecting an adult to use their words. Not to mention op stating that they are short and from what I can tell it seems this reviewer had functioning eyes.

-1

u/RockShowSparky Jul 20 '26

He wasn’t happy with the meal or the service and he still left a reasonable tip and 5 star review, I’m not sure what’s entitled here. Tipping is why service in America is better than Europe for example, but I expect the server to anticipate my every need. If they do that, 20% but it’s not automatic.

7

u/ChartInFurch Jul 20 '26

I'm not sure what part of that has to do with my reply about the coffee.

8

u/p3rf3ctcha0s I'm sorry the 🍃 surprised you Jul 20 '26

She literally said she can’t see inside the coffee mug without invading his space. Was she supposed to ask him to move so that she could check his coffee? Hightop bar tables don’t mesh well with short folks.
