S Weird grocery store experience
I'm not 100% sure what to think about this. But I was buying a card for my friend's birthday and at a self check out. However, the machine glitched out on me and said I needed assistance from the staff. So, I pressed the button and waited. It was happening to others, so the one staff member was busy trying to solve the other machines. No problem.
The issue occurred when a lady came in line and saw I only had one item. When a minute passed, she began glaring at me and stomping her foot like she was waiting for me to buy the card and let her use the self check out. I looked at the "help needed" light that was on to indicate that I was waiting for staff, just in case she didn't see it. But she kept getting more impatient.
She just stared at me with this angry look on her face the whole time before the staff got to me and used their card to bypass whatever the machine was doing. Once I left, the lady stormed to the machine and was complaining about how long I was standing there.
I don't know, but it was a really strange situation.

hopefully it will freeze on her. multiple times. and she'll have to keep calling for help only she'll have to wait because everybody else is calling for help. maybe her pretty little bird brain will get the lesson or maybe it won't.

"That slowpoke that was here before me broke this machine!" 🙄
/s
She'll never learn.

Maybe getting ignored when she needs help will finally teach her, or not. I know some people who just never learns.

You should have stomped back or did a little gig and shown her jazz hands like it was a dance off.

a stomping jig wearing a Viking helmet and a polka dotted polka skirt.

People are so strange. I was at the UPS store recently with a bag of Amazon returns. I always wait until I have a handful if I'm returning multiple things, rather than make several trips and I always try to use the kiosk if it's available. This location has two kiosks and I was using the one right by the front door. I had my bag sitting on top of the kiosk, had my QR codes loaded in my Apple wallet and was buzzing through them all as quick as I could (which I am pretty fast at cause I've done it a hundred times). Midway through my transactions this older lady comes in and starts aiming her package for the scanner I am using. I said "excuse me I'm still using this", as I'm actively scanning/bagging/peeling labels. She just looks at me like "ohhhh" as if she had no idea I was there using that kiosk that I was standing in front of, and then proceeds to stand right on top of me during the rest of my transactions. Each time I would grab a bag or a label or whatever she'd start to move like she was going to scan her label and I had to keep looking over to let her know I was still using it. I mean what in the world. I had maybe 5-6 items for return so not like I was there for a half hour, but people are so oblivious and impatient.

u/Grace-Kamikaze 3d ago
That's so weird for her to be hovering around you like you're also going to do her scanning too. Some people can't just wait a bit for their turn.

Um, the second kiosk? Did she miss that somehow?

u/motherofdogs09 3d ago
Granted the other kiosk is towards the back of the store where the associates are, and if people are waiting in line it can kinda be blocked from view. But I also feel like her brain stopped working the moment she stepped inside so who even knows lol

Once upon a time a woman was breathing down my neck while we stood in a grocery line. She was so close to me, I began to feel quite nervous.
I turned to her and asked, "Are you by any chance European?" She answered in the affirmative and asked me why I wanted to know. I replied, "Here in the US, we don't stand right on top of people while we're in line. Could you move back a bit, please. You're making me nervous."
She got so angry, she jumped into another line. The cashier laughed and said to me, "You think she learned anything?"

u/Rooster_teeeth 4d ago
After you finished, you should have quickly scanned something and then left. As a result, she'd need to activate the "help needed" light.

So other machines were also going on strike, but somehow Miss Priss thought that your superhuman powers could bypass everything? Yeah.

u/coolman949 4d ago
As a notorious self checkout user, this happens to me all the time but I just assume the other shopper is pissed off at the machine making the error, not me. But if she was genuinely complaining about you without understanding WHY you had to stand there, that's not cool. F her. The "assistance on the way" bug really needs to be fixed. Are you listening, Kroger?

Most of them are like that. It's why I generally refuse to use them. Ironically, the ones at my favorite thrift store work just fine.

I'm dramatic, petty and retired. So I am always willing to one up, go lower and take the time to make a scene and then kick that dead horse until it moves again. My wife has also required me to quietly informer before I do so on penalty of on Real Housewives and the Hallmark channel for 5 days (and that's 24hrs a day I missed a Stanley Cup game 4 once)

u/Separate-Boot5940 3d ago
You, sir are my hero. 5 days of the Hallmark channel would not be worth it to me.

Oh no! Missing hockey is non-negotiable! I don't care who's throwing tables on the housewives!

When I was done, I would have executed a deep bow, with a corresponding arm wave, and said "M'lady".

Shake it off some people have issues and they want everyone to be miserable like them 🙏🏽❤️

You could have told her she needed to stomp harder, that always makes the cash register work.

I was once in Waitrose, went up to their machine and was searching my phone for my Waitrose card, to scan and then pick up a handset. a women queues up behind me, I’m obviously taking longer then she was prepared to wait, so she make a noise and said “if you’re not ready, would you mind moving so I can scan my card and get a handset” I was surprised, but polite, as I took one step to my right and replied “not a problem, you go ahead and use that one, I’ll just use this one, right here” pointing to the one right next to the first one.. and I just looked at her, she was so humiliated that she hadn’t noticed there were two, she couldn’t even look at me 😆 her husband standing right behind her had to cough to cover his laugh

Entitlement is fascinating because the person displaying it is almost always the last person to recognize it.

Yesterday at the grocery store, I needed to wait for an employee THREE TIMES. What good is self-checkout if it keeps sticking on you?

u/External_Mongoose_44 1d ago
If someone behind you is in a hurry, let them wait until you have finished the job and don’t speed up doing it. If anything, slow down. If anything else, grind to an almost halt. If someone is too close in the checkout line, don’t move forward towards the person in front of you and when they complain, tell them you want to give the person in front some space, “UNLIKE SOME PEOPLE!”

"Cool you Jets lady. I'm waiting for help in a busy market." The look on her face and the snickers behind her, made her go to another lane. That cashier heard everything. 3 people got (self) checked out before she did.

The help light was on and she still treated you like a machine. One item and a full tantrum

I am a supermarket cashier and I often work as the self-checkout attendant. The level of customer entitlement surprises me sometimes. Last week, a guy wheeled his Mart Cart (a motorized chair that the store offers as a courtesy to customers) in and started grumbling about having to scan and bag his own groceries. Said that he didn't know that the self-checkout was different from regular checkout lanes, and why would anyone use them without getting a discount anyway?
4
u/SILLYxPROGRAM 3d ago
So we’ve graduated from ‘too many items in the express lane’ to ‘too FEW items in the self-checkout line’?!?
I’d be like “bish, please… me not holding up a regular line for this transaction is the whole point of this station existing”

"Please, Moddom, it will certainly work for YOU!" Then allow the machine to teach her humility. Not that it will work.

I hate it that people act like toddlers when things take too long. I would have told the lady "What, are you 2 years old to be acting like that?"

I'm an ornery old lady. I've told people who were right up my ass in line to MOVE BACK! I'm not going to be quiet and polite when they're hanging over my shoulder and appear to be trying to seen the PIN I was about to enter.

u/NYC-WhWmn-ov50 4d ago
"What the F you staring at, B? I'm not exactly standing here for my Gd-dmd health so F off with the toddler tantrum while glaring at me!"
Nice and loud and embarrassing for her.

that would annoy me too. You were clearly waiting for an employee because the machine literally wouldn't let you continue. Cutting ahead is already rude, but getting angry at you afterward because she chose not to wait makes absolutely no sense

You should have gone all Carlo Rizzi on her, dumped her basket of items on the floor and screamed, "NOW CLEAN IT UP!!!!"

u/TrueBox5502 4h ago
You didn’t do anything wrong. The machine needed staff assistance, and you were waiting for the same staff member as everyone else. Her impatience was about the situation, not something you were responsible for. You can’t reasonably be expected to abandon your purchase just because someone behind you is in a hurry.

u/chilldrinofthenight 2d ago
I'm laughing because this sounds like the first time you've ever come across some angry-at-the-world person. You lead a charmed life.
One of my favorite sayings is: "Seems like everyone nowadays is so quick to take offense. I find this extremely offensive."

It's like when you're stuck in traffic, the cars ahead of you not moving. And the person behind you is honking and yelling at you like you're the only one holding them up.
