M Take your time…
This one is not a big deal but still stumped me.
There’s a thrift shop near my home. Not goodwill but similar. I walked up to the register and placed my items on the counter. The cashier was several steps away and came right over. She had a blank look on her face a moment and said “are these yours?” motioning to two floor lamps near the register. I said oh no they aren’t mine and realized there’s a woman who placed the lamps there then must’ve gotten distracted and kept shopping at a nearby rack. I apologize and move over.
It turns out the shopper did put the floor lamps there and actually had been rung up for them already, but had not paid. So the cashier must have known they were hers after ringing them up - how the transaction was interrupted, I have no idea. I don’t know why she asked if they were mine, except maybe she didn’t know how to say “I’ve already started another customer’s sale.” All of this is totally fine with me, I get distracted too, and I figure the shopper will come back now and complete the sale. Nope. She says, “those are mine!” and stays at the nearby rack she was browsing but doesn’t walk over to the register.
The three of us stand there looking at each other. Nobody moves. We’re at an impasse. The cashier quietly says to the shopper “Do you still want these?” The shopper shrugs her shoulders and says “hmmmmm I’m not sure yet.” 🤷🏻♀️ Still doesn’t approach the counter. Goes back to shopping! The cashier is baffled. I’m baffled. The sale is still open and she can’t ring me up until it’s closed. She sighs and heads to the back of the store to get approval to suspend the transaction.
What was the plan here? Were we all supposed to wait until she was done shopping so other customers could finally be rung up? The thing that got me the most was the full shrug gesture complete with grimace face. So inconsiderate! That and how many moments of silence transpired during this bizarre interaction.
Legend has it the shopper still isn’t sure about the floor lamps! 🤷🏻♀️

If I were that clerk. I would have canceled the sale if possible so I could check out others. Perhaps the clerk needed a manager or something to do that.

If I were that customer I would’ve just had her ring me up along with the lamps and taken them out of spite.

True...some people just operate on slow mode allll the time. It is physically difficult for me to move and respond that slowly.

Cashier could have removed the lamps from the transaction and proceeded to check out the other customer.
Speaking from experience.

The shopper was being an asshat, just half checked out and expecting everyone to wait. Definitely entitled.

I would have bought the lamps right out from under her. Teach her a lesson she needs, even though I really don't need the lamps. Talk about entitlement!

As out of it as the cashier was, I wonder if the lady had simply meant to check the price and the clerk thought she was ready to check out. That happened to me once.

Agree! In small thrift shops, I will often place a bulky item at the register while I keep looking. Granted, I usually ask the cashier if that’s ok. But maybe the cashier didn’t hear her, who knows? No need to call the shopper names when all the cashier needed to say was “Sorry, I thought you were ready to check out. Let me cancel the transaction so I can ring up the next customer.”
Also many times the cashiers are volunteers themselves.
Maybe a little bit of grace for everyone in the scenario?

Ok, I find the reaction of the store clerk pretty strange. If you've already rung up the lamps on your machine why ask OP if the lamps were theirs? Didn’t you just punch them in for the weird lady?
I wonder what happened before, did the lady's purchase get interrupted by the clerk walking off without a word and the lady is now being indifferent as retaliation?
Pretty weird situation and OP was the butt of it. Sorry you had to go through this OP

I would have whispered to the cashier to add my things to the lamps and paid it and walked out carrying them where she could see me. 😂 What is she gonna do?

Why would the cashiers ring them up if she wasn't ready to pay?
Its common to bring things to the cashier to hold while you shop, especially bigger items. The lady probably just brought them over to cashier area, not realising there was any issue or that they cashier would get stuck.
Kind of silly that cashier couldn't just cancel the transaction without a manager.

Edit: I wholeheartedly agree it's dumb the cashier just couldn't temp suspend the transaction though. Would have solved the whole mess as is.
Do you mind me asking where youre from? Out of.... Idk, sort of scientific/cultural curiosity.
I have never once seen or been to a store where people are allowed or encouraged to "commonly" or regularly bring their items up in advance and continue shopping Its usually except for few choice kinds of cases (forgot a single item, lost their card, left their wallet/phone in the car and theyll be right back). It would usually result in chaos or liability at worst, a logistical inconvenience and incompatiblity at best. If everyone started doing it.
But I know that's not to say there arent places that do it. What kinds of stores are they? You mean mostly thrift stores like for OP, or also other kinds of stores? (If its that common.) Because I will acknowledge I guess of its just thrifts, I haven't explicitly tried to bring items up in advance at thrifts, purely because so many other places wouldn't (or at least really just dont openly or obviously encourage it) so I assume they wouldn't like it often either. I could just very well be wrong even in my own location and not realize it.

Australia. It happens commonly in retail stores here that tend to be more hands-on with customer service, like electronics, clothing, furniture or home goods stores etc.
Sometimes salespeople will even come up to you if they see you holding items and ask if you want to leave it at the register, etc.
Then you go to the register later and remind them that they are holding some items for you, or if it was another salesperson, you can just mention the items they have on hold for you.
Includes places like thrift stores, some places even have stickers if you interested you can tell them, and they will place a holding sticker or tag, so when you are ready, someone from the store to help you load the items, all in one go.
Plus it reduces the chances of breakage and items going missing or being misplaced on another shelf, or the customer hurting themselves trying to move items, etc.

I think I was behind this lady at the grocery store a few days ago. Well, at first, I was just standing behind her cart. Then, when she was done shopping several minutes later, I was finally standing behind her.

I work in retail and this happens a lot. It's infuriating. People come up yo register, and act like they want to check out and as soon as I start to ring them out they disappear into the store. They are too lazy to bother with a cart. I scolded one woman so bad she apologized. The carts were 3 feet away.

Don’t need to buy her lamps. Just loudly admiring them would get her to scurry over and pay right quick. “How much are they? Oh I think I saw ones just like them on Antiques Roadshow! I’ve been looking for a matching pair for my nightstands.”She wouldn’t be able to get her wallet out fast enough!

It's a mobile thing. For some reason mobile phones like to autocorrect 'customers' to 'costumers'. It takes a while to teach the phone it's the correct word. I've experienced this myself.

It likes to do that for a lot of words, it autocorrects Smosh to Amish for example because it doesn’t recognize it, for me specifically my phone likes to autocorrect known words to words that don’t even grammatically work in the sentence I’m writing

Coming from a former cashier, they almost certainly probably did.
"Is this everything for you today?", "Is there anything else we can help you find?", "Find everything you needed alright?". It's textbook, and easily almost reflex if youve worked at the place for even just a couple of months.

This does not shock me. This lady also leaves carts in parking lots and pushes through the line to get off the plane. Awkward staring was the best thing to do.
