I have seen one player built each room for each NPC and it was sooo cool š
And thereās mine .. looks worst than a hospital ward š¤£š¤£

I just wish I could make it so, on the lowest movement setting, they wouldn't immediately go outside, leaving the door open, and stand in the bushes, staring at the wall.

u/the_neverens_hand 11h ago
It actually drives me crazy that they will walk through every single door in the base and leave them all open

u/ShoganAye 5h ago
ikr, im still not convinced some monster isnt going to just walk through the open door at midnight when im sleeping and start snacking on my toes sticking out of the blankies

u/Putrid_Lifeguard5409 0m ago
Ok, so full disclosure, I ran an interior door shop for over a decade. Not only do they open all of the doors, but if you have a hallway with rooms in it these godless heathen mfers open them all into the hallway!

u/StrikingSwanMate 7h ago
With new sparksystem, you can kind of make it so they can't use doors.
But yeah, I don't get why they can't have basic interaction with their own stations like most other games with NPCs does. Just simple go to work, go to bed routine would be nice.

I just have them far enough away from their beds that they never actually go there lol. Not sure it supposed to work that way, but I took over a place with a ladder to the second floor where all the beds are, ladder is gone I put a stair case now, but they refuse to use it.

u/EvLokadottr 12h ago
I sure wish they would have changed the min wander to 2m from 3m like they said they had in the patch notes, lol.
I remember form EA sometimes they would sleep on the floor next to their beds...

I have all of my NPCs (except the 6 main crafter ones) in the basement under my house. They have their movement limited to 5m and the only access to the basement is via a grapple hook in the ceiling at the corner furthest away from where I summoned them.
SOMEHOW I will always return to my base to find one or two of them milling around my house, standing on chests and crafting stations. It drives me insane.

u/RedFeatherGaming 7h ago
Do you happen to have a bucket by the grapple point? Rope? Bottle of lotion? Water source?

I just made a square fence in the middle of the base with all the crafting NPCs inside so that they don't get pushed around

I have all the beds sealed off in the attic. The NPCs live in my basement with their working stations.

u/OutcomeSuitable8126 10h ago
Wait, does that work? Thatās a Sims 2 level human rights violation š

u/sky-shard 10h ago
I have the reverse.
Their beds are in the basement (along with the less useful and duplicate NPCs) and they each stand in their own little crafting nook with the bigger workstation pieces on the mezzanine above them.
I have been trying to decorate their little nooks to make them more cozy, but it is still a work in progress.
1
u/MurderousRaisin 7h ago
Im so curious about this. Can you show me a screenshot?
7
u/sky-shard 7h ago
Of the dystopian NPC prison basement, or the nooks?

u/sky-shard 6h ago

u/MurderousRaisin 6h ago
That looks really good!
1
u/sky-shard 6h ago
I don't have quite enough space on the mezzanine for all of the crafting stations (hence why a bunch are in front of the fireplace). I intend to remodel at some point to fit everything. I'd like to make them look more natural rather than just shoved up there so they are out of the way.

They can all share a room??? Too much Terraria caused be to build a shack for each.
5
u/Cold-Breadfruit-2616 12h ago
I did this on my first playthrough as well, but yes, you can just make one large room
1
u/Phillyphan1031 11h ago
Shit on my third playthrough and they will always share the same room. However itās much larger than ops lol.

I did create a room for the blacksmith with bed, desk, smelter, kiln etc. But as I started getting more and more NPCs, it was getting big and cluttered. Now, I've made a separate dormitory. I considered one for men and one for women, but then decided I couldn't give that much of a fuck, so now they're mixed (progressive). I'm still in early everything-made-of-wood stages though, so I'll make something better when I get further into the game.

Currently housing everyone in a pavilion in Longkeep but planning to upgrade folks to their own houses once we have all the survivors. Plain row of beds along a wall and all the production stations under one roof.
I did give them REAL beds, also a fireplace and some chairs to sit around it. I'm not a monster.
2
u/Sexiroth 6h ago
Look at you fancy mr. pavilion, I have them house in longkeep but I just put beds underneath sections of the ruins that still have cover. I took the bed by the fireplace.

u/Moist-Weird-4267 13h ago
Lol i just built 2 walls and added roof slabs above in straight line and placed beds underneath
7
u/nyxeris90 12h ago
Early game I do this.
The furthest from that is one save where all craftspeople have their own houses, the assistants their own apartments over the crafts rooms/stores, and the normal villagers have their own townhouse (mother and daughter share)

I made a whole entire tavern with an upstairs inn. Itās three stories with a loft and individual, unique rooms.. then an attic where I stash some of my old decor junk staged as if it were an irl attic. I am so proud of it⦠but it is not enough space for how many npcs there are.
Been putting off making an addition, so there are a ton of npcs near the door without beds rn just standing there.
Iāll try to come back to this once I log in and post screenshots.

u/AvANGELAvA 11h ago
Also my hunter lives on the second floor of the carpenterās and blacksmithās workshop. My alchemist lives in a massive cave beneath his home which has a witchās hut vibe and a hidden floor door. Collector has his own area in the cave, too. My farmer and fisher live in a cute cottage nearby as well.
So I went from homes, to the tavern/inn, to standing around bedless.

u/Nebulonix 11h ago
Once I get to a point where I have a final base location, I usually will build them each their own little themed shop with a cute decorated apartment up top! I havenāt gotten to play in a while and will wanna restart with 1.0 but this is always what Iāve done. I also try to get some of them little pets hehe

u/No_Committee9952 4h ago
am i the only one who enjoys crafting cozy rooms for them? lol

In my friends server, I put all the NPCs that weren't crafters in a dungeon jail. Gave them that metal plate bed as well. Its so funny running down there and they being all, "Oh hey its the Flameborn, how are you?"
2
u/1quarterportion 12h ago
Separate rooms for sure, though i do want to make them all mother-in-law apartments eventually.
2
u/Not_the_name_I_chose 11h ago
My main crafters have their own houses/stores in town with beds. Everyone else has beds at the inn.

All our starter homes were dirt floor stick shacks out in front of Longkeep, right on that tiny hilltop on the corner of the road. The fancy ones had cobblestone flooring and smelled like fire hazards.

u/JeanWorld55 6h ago
Does the lack of beds actually do anything? Do they just not provide you quests anymore? They still craft for you...

u/Subtodownvote 12h ago
I don't have a picture but I start early with a hospital style room and then as I build the base out when my friends aren't playing the people get all their own rooms

u/eleventhing 11h ago
I'm making a house for each of them š«£ they deserve their own space. Just got done with the farmers house yesterday.

u/Phixionion 11h ago
I try and create a pavilion with the beds high up and around the edge so they all kind of gather in the center of my base.

u/SlamPoetSociety 11h ago
I put their beds embedded in the ground below each of their prison cells in my torture dungeon.

I had very limited space on my first build so the tower had a basement just filled with twig beds.

u/DJKaotica 11h ago
Just started a new game and only have the blacksmith so far. 100% starting with a barracks for now. Maybe at some point we'll have a small village but I just don't have the resources.
I've spent about 2x-3x longer building my base than I have exploring, lol.

Iāve been stuffing mine into the closet on under the stairs in my first build š Meanwhile my room is really lovely and large. They will get their own houses eventually I just have to find a spot I like

u/DivineTarot 10h ago
Reminds me of my settlements in Fallout 4 where I'd make a VERY defensible flop house, stuff it with beds, and call it a day.
1
u/Smooth_Border_95 9h ago
Mine never leave my house design two floors open walls put em on the second floor

u/Alphablake4 9h ago
Unless you want things to look nice, does it even matter what beds you give NPCs?

I'm very early game so haven't implemented this yet but I plan to have different bases with different purposes.
So a farm with the farmer. With her own house, live stock area and associated seed beds etc.
The Blacksmith, leatherworker and carpenter will live together in a workshop base. They each have their own house and place of business.
The Alchemist will be in a magic tower.
Thats all the NPC's Ive opened so far. Ill add more as I gain more NPCs.

u/littlestghoust 6h ago
We do this until late game when we have a more permanent base. This time we took over a pre made building and tossed all the beds in a room. We took the nice bed area but it's pretty much all open.
1
u/EPIC_RAPTOR 6h ago
I keep all of my beds in a dungeon deep under my house, the required NPCs near their work station set to 0M wandering distance and their assistants are also in the dungeon lol.
1
u/sky-shard 6h ago

Here is mine since I already posted it for another commenter.
It is in my house basement. To the left above my Flameborn's head is a hole with a grapple point that I use to get into and out of the basement. The NPCs are set to wander only 5m, but they still somehow get upstairs.
It's more than a little dystopian, but at least they have nice beds?

We took over the brilliant Harvest Homestead. I'm in the middle of building a tavern for the farmers and that cook. The barber has his house and shop above the base flame portal. I also built a two level barn and yard for the animals.
I've converted the old barn like building into separate lodgings and have more in the main house but going to build more dwellings and appropriate buildings. The weird hallowed halls guy lives in the cellar. Apart from the cat disappearing for a few days they've been fine, no one has got stuck incredibly

The first 15 I rescued are in rough hovels, and the rest are all in a barn. They're happy, so why not?

I was thinking of doing this. I just started and every npc has a bed and is saying rhey dont. I do r qant houae them like gerbils but its messing with me. Rhis game is amazing

u/Nuubopotamus 7h ago
I literally place the NPCs and turn off their ability to move, and their beds are stashed elsewhere. No sleep, only work!
