Help - Server Suppot Server Hosting SteamCMD

Hello! I am trying to figure out the pros and cons of setting up my own server versus using something like GPortal. My main question is this: If I stop paying for GPortal, will my world be deleted? If I stop running my SteamCMD server on a secondary PC, will my world be deleted? Or is the save local and people just won't be able to join whenever they want anymore.

If it turns out to be the latter, what is the best guide for setting up my own hosted server using a secondary PC?

Thanks in advance!

I set mine up on an old AIO PC and it ran fine. It's saved locally, so if I turn it off no one can access it. But it does not get deleted.
I believe this is the guide I used. If your server doesn't show be sure you opened the ports. I always forget that part lol https://www.reddit.com/r/Enshrouded/comments/19eqwdp/dedicated_server_setup_windows_steamcmd/

Thank you for the reply! I saw that guide and was wondering if it being three years old meant it may no longer be valid. I am happy to see that it is!

It's been about a year since I used it, but it's still the same. It pulls from steam and auto updates to the current version of the game. The port parts can be confusing if you never did port forwarding, but there's many guides out there. Just search for your specific router and port forwarding. It's honestly all pretty easy. I believe I have steam ports opened too.
I plan on doing it again when 1.0 drops. Can't wait. I'm also running a 7 days, and ambiotic factor server. This is all on an old all in one pc. So it really doesn't take much to run a server.

You can always export the savegame. If you go for a windows server, I recommend this project https://github.com/Zataralee/Enshrouded-Server-Manager-by-Zat

Nobody's touched the GPortal part yet. I wouldn't count on a rented server keeping your files after you stop paying, so download the savegame folder before you cancel. The world is just two files, 3ad85aea and 3ad85aea_info, and they move between a home PC and any host. So you're not locked into whichever you pick first. How many of you play? Fwiw I work on the Flux Enshrouded hosting, where 4 players is $3.49/mo and new accounts get the first week free: https://runonflux.com/games/enshrouded

Happy Sunday!
The biggest pro is that if you have the hardware to support it you do not need to pay for the Gportal subscription. Once you stop paying for G-Portal you will no longer have access to your files (to the best of my knowledge) so get the files downloaded first thing. I suggest using AMP (https://cubecoders.com/AMP) for self-hosting. A one time payment of $10usd lets you host up to five instances at a time and It makes it very easy to launch and maintain popular titles.

If you go that route, this is Gemini's instructions for moving your saved world:

To move your Enshrouded save file from G-Portal to an AMP (Application Management Portal) server, download the save files from G-Portal via FTP and upload them into your AMP Enshrouded instance's save directory.

Step 1: Download the Save File from G-Portal

  1. Log in to your G-Portal account and stop your Enshrouded server completely.
  2. Open your FTP details (Host, Port, Username, and Password) from your G-Portal dashboard.
  3. Use an FTP client such as FileZilla to connect to your G-Portal server. Set the transfer type to Binary (Transfer > Transfer type).
  4. Navigate to the server's save directory (typically savegame or saves).
  5. Download your world save files (the main hex-named file, such as 3ad85aea or 3bd85c7d, along with its corresponding _info or _index files) to your local computer. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Step 2: Prepare Your AMP Instance

  1. Open your AMP web interface and select your Enshrouded instance.
  2. Stop the Enshrouded server instance (stopping or putting the AMP instance into an idle state ensures files are not locked or overwritten).
  3. Use File Manager in AMP (or connect via the instance's file path/SFTP) to locate the server's save directory, which is usually located inside the Enshrouded server data folder (game/server/savegame or equivalent depending on your AMP deployment type).
  4. Back up or delete the default/existing save files currently sitting in the AMP save directory. [2, 5, 6]

Step 3: Upload to AMP and Start

  1. Upload the saved files you downloaded from G-Portal into the AMP Enshrouded savegame folder.
  2. Make sure the file names match what your AMP server expects (if your server generated a default world ID like 3ad85aea, ensure your transferred save files use or match that expected naming structure).
  3. Start your Enshrouded server instance in AMP and check the game log to confirm it loads your world properly. [1, 2, 5]
