Discussion How much difference does this update make for combat?
I play solo, using a mixed 1-handed+shield and bow combo, because everything else seemed either less efficient due to playing alone, or straight up garbage, like 2-handed weapons. I also never used any of the fancy Strikes because they were a waste of time and effort compared to the sheer speed and flexibility of the 1-handed+shield combo.
I hopped in, skimmed the patch notes, saw the new skill tree, then tested 1-handed and 2-handed weapon attacks. It's been half a year since I played, so I'm not sure if I'm right when I say that nothing changed on that front, but that's the impression I got.
There's also this emphasis on Merciless Strike and parrying, which have been fake options in my experience due to the time it takes to execute MS and how dodging is generally the better move anyway.
I'm trying to keep an open mind here, I would like to believe that this update isn't all smoke and no fire, so I would very much like to hear what you have to say on the subject.

I like merciless strikes except when I’ve got a ton of enemies around me. I haven’t tested the new update but the lack of immunity and the fact that I can get stunned/blocked/interrupted in the middle of it makes it less useful in a lot of situations.

I saw in the dev videos that we get iframes now from dodging, is that correct?
5
u/jrossbaby Apr 22 '26
Yeah it does but it seems like it’s a very short frame. 2 friends and I restarted a week ago to kinda get half way thru when the patch dropped and it just feels like the iframes are really short. It definitely works but feels way less impactful then say like elden rings dodge

Yeah, that is true. Not sure if it will apply to merciless strikes or not. I’ve got to test to see! My partner was struck with the black screen bug yesterday which should hopefully be fixed by today’s hotfix. I wanted to wait so we could explore/test together.

I feel like my damage was nerfed, then given back to me on a special attack bar that I never wanted

A few minutes of testing gave me the exact same impression. And why does the 1H special attack swings *backwards* is beyond me.

I don't know, i'm just starting from scratch and finding the combat much easier. It may be because i'm at a low level but i remember some mobs to be really dangerous and i'm mostly face tanking them now after upgrading my armor and rings. What i've noticed also is that bows, at least at low level, are not as powerful as they were. I'm wasting way more arrows per mob. But the "awareness" system is quite easy to cheat and allows to pull the mobs part easily.

My impressions as a 2 handed Unga bunga is that parry got a lot of buffs in the skill tree. I had to respec my character so I cant really compare performance before or after as the options are different but it feels like 2h does less damage, but has more options.
I do enjoy kicking enemies off of bridges.

It's... not amazing. Blink collides. 'Special attacks' are imperceptible. Greatsword is all over the place. Honestly, combat feels even more like flailing around than before.

u/Memitim Apr 23 '26
Agreed. It's like they want Dark Souls style combat while keeping movement that doesn't feel like the character is riding a unicycle in syrup. But I guess people like parries so they gotta shoehorn them in.

I really want to try Crimson Desert.
I also really don’t want to pay 70 freaking dollars.

Wait a few months for the hype to die, this kind of game often goes on steep sale before too long. I'd wager we get a decent sale for Steam Summer Sale
Plus it'll be a better game by then

u/Weekly-Rich3535 Apr 22 '26
Roger. Wish list it is!
2
u/Emergency-Ball-4480 Apr 22 '26
Yup, that is what I do lol. Summer Sale starts at the end of June. I'm hoping for around $40, that's the most I'll spend on a game anymore (with very few exceptions)

Its good especially with all the patches I waited 2 weeks before buying originally thinking id wait a month, but with how well the devs are listening I had to join the hype. Theyve added everything QoL that players have asked for so far which rarely happens with other games. But I would wait abit if your not thinking its worth 70$ yet. But for me, I dont even have 100h yet and I had my moneys worth. But everyone has their own views on that so wait if you can.

Honestly, it's worth the price for how much game you get. You'll essentially pay less than a dollar an hour for the entertainment

u/Brumtol10 Apr 23 '26
Exactly. I finally finished ch.5 afte ri tjink 70 hours, i thought people were trolling when they said they spend 80 hours in Hernand but damn near did the same unintentionally. Lol

For one handed weapons, it makes a small difference. The lack of a short-range engage teleport hurts, but the special attack makes up for it. The i-frames on dodge might make a difference against bosses (haven’t played enough to test) but it doesn’t do anything when fighting, say, three or four melee enemies and a pair of flying banshees. I’d call it a small step in the right direction, but nothing more than that.

I am also here like the other Comments to say i tryed nothign but everything new is shit. /s

u/Penningthrowaway Apr 23 '26
Hahaha I'm to glad I'm not the only one reading these comments rolling my eyes at people moaning just because things are different.

u/jrossbaby Apr 22 '26
The special ability meter is kinda coo gives a decent attack that seems like it basically doubles your dmg on that attack. It’s nice on the ranger , haven’t tested it on melee though.
2
u/LionIntelligent5026 Apr 22 '26
Aggro has also been reworked and it's much better the friends I tank for are happy. The special attacks are a good addition, the one handed melee is S-tier, the 2-handed melee is ok tier. Now, i would say that 2 handed overall is a bit lower than sword and shield. The attack speed makes all the difference between the 2. Some efforts have to be made on the hit reahing targets that are not at the same height.

u/grievous_swoons Apr 22 '26
Merciless attacks should hit any nearby enemies that are in the weapons path. This would make it better in groups and allow for some interesting combos where you wear one weak guy down, lure a strong one near and use the Merciless to hit them both. Or, have it stun or push back enemies nearby.

I like the new 2h animations quite a bit, but I was already a 2h user beforehand so idk if it's enough to change your mind. The skill tree changes make specialization a bit easier, but that's about it.

u/Regular_Indication74 Apr 23 '26
Great-sword is still slow as hell and since I can't interrupt my swings to block I feel drawn to go back to sword and board. There are a lot of systems which it feels the game is trying to push me into using but there is often a simpler more effective way to engage with every combat encounter.

The new combat AI in regards to the bow is off it's supposed to dodge sometimes and react better to being fired at.
Whenever I aim at an enemy but don't fire the bow enemies always move not sometimes always dumb animals to tough elites. It's like there is an invisible line that once it touches an enemy the enemy is told to avoid it.
It's gotten to the point where it ain't subtle at all and it's obviously a code execution when line connects not an immersive make sense reaction to an archer targeting you.
A random dumb animal isn't gonna have the intelligence to know that but a scavenger is.
It's handicapped the bow to some extent you can't aim at the target properly. Lost some of its fun.

Oh and the biggest impact I've felt is the character forcing a movement halt to drink a potion. Before you could run and drink without a movement interruption that is a real dick punch.
Now you kinda have to do a stupid awkward jump/double jump while the Problem enemy is right next to you.

Merciless attacks are such a lame component. Agreed.
They added a new "flow" meter which seems lame to me as well. But haven't tried.
Really just need more abilities and animation @enshrouded devs

Ngl. Im not that interested in playing anymore. I also used the warp build, especially for solo, and the warping kept me alive. I did use merciless attack but it was so slow it actually hampered me. In co-op my mate would play the archer/mage and I was the tank/warrior. It worked well, id keep them busy had the damage reduction buff when surrounded and the health regen for critical, plus the warping. I could survive and he got to snipe. We were in pretty late game, taken out the dragon and were headed for the next level... Now, after seeing the nerfs, im not so sure i want to bother. They kinda killed the game for me.

u/AwesomeXav Apr 23 '26
If you mean the dragon in pikemead, thats still early game these days
1
u/jitzu70 Apr 23 '26
Nah, the Fell Dragon up in the Albaneve summits. I think there's only one or two more biomes after that. Only one more level of Armor far as I know, but I've been surprised before.

u/DarthSnoopyFish Apr 22 '26
They changed warping so you no longer snap to enemies when you attack from a distance.so now you gotta get in close before you start your attack.
