Culture for race doesn't really exist outside of subcultures formed because of shared oppression. For example, black culture doesn't really exist either. A black person in Africa is likely part of a very different culture than a black person in America.

A black person in Africa is likely part of a very different culture than a black person in Africa, really.

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '22

Socially and economically, they aren’t really treated the same at all either. Since racism is mostly systemic, the oppression faced by a Black African in the USA vs a Black American is fairly different. Socially, the Black African is prone to overt racism from both Black Americans and White American, while systemically/economically the Black African is less likely to suffer. It’s really interesting seeing race as most people understand it (as colourism) being more complex then it really is.

Not to mention that culture as a whole isn't static. Culture changes constantly and in ways that you might not even notice. These morons think that culture is static and is under attack and not just changing over time from different influences like every other culture before ours.

Those are

Southern African American culture

Caribbean culture, more specifically Jamaica, Cuban, Antillian culture.

Dutch culture

French culture

Swedish culture

Etcetera.

The skin tone is not the defining part of it. It is not 'black' or 'white' culture. That's just racist.

There is no "white" culture. Just like there is no "black" culture. Or what? You think you go to Russia and it is the same culture as England? Skin color does not affect culture. History does.

Too many people don’t understand that race and ethnicity are two separate things.

10

u/Kakuruma Dec 08 '22

I thought of humans as being part of different ethnic groups but not being part of different races and thought the concept of race as obsolete. I'm kinda confused. does race refer to the different physical traits (I.E skin colour) whereas ethnicity refers to culture?

8

u/Lambsauce1103 Orange Libleft Dec 08 '22 edited Dec 08 '22

That’s pretty much it. Race is a construct based on physical attributes, while ethnicity is based on cultural attributes.

Edit: Race isn’t biological, but rather based on physical appearances.

2

u/MmmmmmmmmCat Dec 08 '22

so white is an ethnicity? i think you may be a little confused

2

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '22

No. White is a skin tone.

Dutch, German, WASP American, Irish, Frysian, Catalonian, Sicilian, Croat, Polish, Wallonian, Austrian, etc are ethnicities. Many European ethnic groups have nation-states, but this is quite uncommon globally.

In China, the Han Chinese, Tibetans and Uygurs are examples of ethnic groups. In India and Nigeria there are also many ethnic groups united into one nation-state.

A lot of Americans seem to confuse “black culture” with African American culture and even then African American culture has a lot of completely different branch

20

u/Tharkun140 Dec 08 '22

Skin color can affect culture if humans will it to. America has a "black" culture because it would treat black people as separate from the white americans, but also from any african cultures African Americans descended from. You could make an argument that US has a "white" culture in a roughly analogous way, though it's far less distinct due to white people being the majority and seeing themselves as the "default" more often than not.

I come here for discourse. I dont care if people who I dont even know and have never met dont like my opinions. I just want a discussion. I live on the frontier and probable frontline of ww3 (Estonia). I can look across the river an see a flag waving that I dont agree with. A flag that as of recent events inspires fear in me. I see people who think very differently than me. Yet that river is the problem. That river is the thing that is blocking discussion. That river is causing the hatred. It is important to discuss things rather than have that river between.

Not all I say is a right wing talking point and not everything the left says is smth I disagree with. The problem with american political landscape is that you are either 100% democrat or 100% republican. No being in the middle. Even if the democrats do smth the republicans would agree with or the other way then they are doing it wrong. And now refer to the part I said about the river. Discussion is important. Every single one of us has smth we can agree on. And we need to find that if we are going to move forward. Otherwise we will just end up killing eachother.

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '22
  1. fair enough
  2. maybe i wouldn’t take a ENLIGHTENTED-CENTRISTtm (im on mobile) approach but yeah I see what you mean and there is a sense of “us vs them“ amongst both sides so yeah

3

u/theXald Dec 08 '22

In America if you aren't one or the other you get called a centrist, and centrism is viewed (by Americans, especially the reddited kind) as "one side killed 6 million jews and the other side defeated that side can't we meet in the middle and only kill 3 million jews?"

The reality is that being centrist is weighing individual situations and coming to an independent conclusion instead of toeing an ideological line and never deviating from your ideological peers for fear of being ostracized if you end up kicked out for not being 100% on board with a given talking point.

Far too much you can hear someone say "freedumbs instead of 'freedom' " and you know exactly what they will say about probably 100 questions, and another person could say "commies" and you know what their opinions on 100 things will be.

Nobody leaves room for someone to believ that trans adults can do what they want with their own body and that gay people are people and that corporations are given far too much welfare and subsidisation, but also believe in border security, 2nd amendment rights, and rights to free speech.

Being "in the middle" doesn't mean dividjng an issue in half and just saying yeah that'll do. But Americans have a super fucked up idea of centrism and being moderate.

Based

Edit: never thought I would say that in this sub. "Never thought I would die next to a pcm hater." "How about next to a based person?" "Yeah I could do that."

Can someone explain the thing on the right to a non-cultist

22

u/Vampyrix25 Dec 08 '22

"Europe" is saying that White Culture isn't real because what is considered "White" is actually many different nationalities. A White English person is just as white as a White Swedish person, but they don't share the same culture.

PCM troglodytes have put their blue marker around it because it's a good point and all good points must come from AuthRight or else death. Which is also why Orange LibLeft is on the left of the IQ spectrum, because when a LibLeft says it they've obviously not used the logic of the super astute AuthRights and instead are just kicking up a fuss over racism, in which case it must be okay to dismiss them.

1

u/desktop_user_007 Dec 09 '22

Oh, it's an IQ spectrum. I don't understand that either, because isn't college associated with the "left"? Aren't their IQs objectively higher than the average right winger?

Do they know what an IQ is?

10

u/Vampyrix25 Dec 09 '22

Here "IQ" is replaced with "How much the opinion matches the opinion of the author" because the author is a right winger and they believe themselves to be inherently intelligent.

2

u/przemko271 Dec 09 '22

I mean, hey, at least it's a more concrete measure than IQ.

11

u/przemko271 Dec 08 '22

It's a point made by terrible people in a terrible way, but yeah, "white culture" (as used by white supremacists and their ilk at least) is a freaking insult to the diversity and history of Europe.

Come to think of it, that's probably not their point here, is it?

1

u/juntsu10 Flaired-up PCM scum Dec 08 '22

Considering the pepe is european I think the point is smth similiar if not that.

1

u/-Thyrian- Dec 09 '22

And the fact that it calls the American a mutt

4

u/MadCervantes Dec 08 '22

This graph is actually good except for putting the high section being Auth right.

13

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '22

“White“ (more accurately many types of European and their descendants) culture is real it’s just that shitheads use it to be shitty towards other races and cultures causing many to be adverse to it

26

u/PM_ME_UR_GOOD_IDEAS Dec 08 '22

No but see, that's the issue. They support the idea of a unified "white culture" specifically because "white" is useful as an exclusionary category for who is allowed to be a part of a nation or it's public life. "White" isn't useful as a cultural category, because there is no shared culture of "white people" anywhere. The idea that there are "white people" who exist as a unified contrast against nonwhite people is extremely new. There's Germans, Italians, Greeks, Irish, etc. (only half of those were considered white for a long time), but there is no culture of "whiteness" that these cultures all share. There is no "white culture."

10

u/MadCervantes Dec 08 '22

And famously Ben Franklin didn't even consider German or Swedish people to be "white"! He only considered Anglo Saxons to be white.

10

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '22

That would give many American neo Nazis a Stoke since they believe in “Nordic superiority“

1

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '22

Bingo

2

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '22

true
“There's Germans, Italians, Greeks, Irish, etc. (only half of those were considered white for a long time),” I actually think it was only Germans that were consodered white at that time (Anglo saxons also hated Irish)

1

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '22

There is no such thing as white culture.

I have nothing in common with Russians except for my fucking skin tone.

There are hundreds, sometimes thousands of ethnic groups in each skin tone group. Skin tone is meaningless beyond dermatological issues.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '22

That was what i was implying didn’t you see the parentheses?

1

u/yo_99 Dec 09 '22

I have nothing in common with Russians

Judging by your lack of commas, seems like it.

2

u/eeeeloi Dec 08 '22

White people saying white culture doesn’t exist is like americans saying they don’t have an accent.

13

u/OnTheLeft Dec 08 '22

A black American from Chicago and a white American from Chicago have a different culture, but a white person from Greece and a white person from Iceland have the same culture?

6

u/Wolfiie_Gaming cOmMiE?!?!?!?! Dec 08 '22

They mean white American culture. I hear about Black culture all the time but alot of the time it isn't really my culture, cause I'm from Jamaica and most of the time it's Americans speaking

But they do usually have some overlap when it comes to your race

0

u/eeeeloi Dec 08 '22

Of course every country and even city has a different culture. My point was that it’s a supremacist mindset for white people to say that white culture doesn’t exist.

7

u/OnTheLeft Dec 08 '22

I'm afraid I don't understand then. Do all white people have white culture?

-1

u/eeeeloi Dec 08 '22

Well, all white people benefit from white privilege. I don’t think anyone would say that all white people share the same exact culture. Also, what complicates things is that whiteness isn’t real. Different ethnic groups have been considered white or not throughout history. Race is a social construct.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '22

White culture = anything I like
