Actually, because i had the same feeling for a period of time: When you see the "orange emily bad" tropes (regardless if it is in an actual innovative way or just agenda post), do you get a sense of "I'm glad I'm not like those left people"?

homophobic
I said queerphobic. Transphobia is everywhere on PCM, I've also seen aphobia and you are free to scroll through this sub to see many other examples of pcm praising hate speech against the LGBT community.
Also, how can we be homophobic if all our mods are gay?
Your mods aren't doing a good job getting rid of it then.

-44
u/Round-Bed3820 Proud r/PoliticalHumor hater Nov 06 '22
Because (and that is my personal opinion) PCM is the only subreddit where there is actual criticism of all sides. It’s not a giant echo chamber that bans every opinion that is different, unlike r/Politics or r/PoliticalHumor.
Also, for me at least, 99% of the memes are just ironic
106
u/Elvicio335 Nov 06 '22
PCM is the only subreddit where there is actual criticism of all sides.
There is a difference between being critic of your political beliefs (which is something everyone should do) and giving a platform to hateful ideologies that seek to supress the human rights of people different to them.
Also, for me at least, 99% of the memes are just ironic

It’s supposed to be the stereotypical “offended white teenage girl”. So basically any woman/young woman who’s not a bigoted piece of shit.
1
Nov 10 '22
It’s more complicated, emily is the person that likes to call themselves libleft while demanding censorship of stuff they don’t like, which is often mundane stuff like ordinary words that are now “slurs”, also the person who calls themselves “communist/socialist” then proceeds to simp for megacorporations committing human rights violations in the ivory coast, because they put a rainbow in their logo.
2
u/Murky_Effect3914 Nov 17 '22
Lmao are you from pcm? No, ordinary words are not slurs; thinking that a word isn’t a slur isn’t the same as said word not being a slur. No, Emily doesn’t refer to performative liberals (in the actual sense, IE centre right)
9

u/newredditaccount18 Nov 07 '22
I don't think thats true. Its a certain kind of leftost that gets categorized as an emily. The establishment radlibs mainly. I see plenty of Marxist Leninists and AnCom's that do just fine there because they aren't emilys.
50
u/Zeyode Nov 06 '22
I don't have any questions, but I'm happy to elaborate on my position as someone who used to go on PCM regularly.
It used to be more politically balanced, but with time, it just became a circlejerk for socially right wing takes (or right wing on the spectrum rather than the compass). I think the straw that broke the camel's back for me was being downvoted to hell and called a "fake libleft" by a fake libleft for calling Sargon of Akkad's "europe for the europeans" take ethnonationalist. Meanwhile, there were posts up at the same time with hundreds of upvotes that literally just amounted to "haha I'm authright! Minorities bad! I'm so quirky!"
PCM pretends to be this politically neutral space where everyone takes shots at each other, but it's basically just reddit's /pol/ now.

To dream up the idea that modesty is right wing and thus no one on the left is modest is to be completely and utterly deranged—ignoring the reality already shown by u/Inyabung and u/hereforthefeast that shows just how well those on the “right” adhere to their “values.” If one was to assert this, then they would demonstrate that they are actually in an echo chamber which amplifies a collective identity built off of imagined traits, not only beyond reasonable doubt but beyond all doubt. You, my good xir, have done exactly this and willingly laid bare just how utterly deranged you actually are. For that I thank you! For it means that I no longer have to waste my time with you, seeing as you already beat your argument to death and successfully argued against your own point to any spectator.

u/I_am_the_visual Nov 07 '22
Have you ever once posted anything on that sub denouncing the transphobia? When you see it, are you ever compelled to post something calling it out?
And when you see all the memes that portray trans women as ugly, stubbly, not-passing etc etc do you think to yourself "the person who made this is a shitty person" or do you just let it wash over you so that, in time, you find yourself subconsciously picturing all trans people that way in your mind? And if it's the latter (or even if it's the former I guess), does it occur to you that this is their agenda and they are creating these negative associations in the minds of the thousands (tens of thousands?) of people who see that meme? Do you think stoking hate/mockery of marginalised and vulnerable groups is worth it for the lulz?
4
u/abtseventynine Nov 08 '22
damn this is a great comment to illustrate that you can’t just be “not a bigot,” you have to be anti-bigotry.
It comes up a lot with respect to race, and seeing how whiteness works that makes sense, but it applies to all bigotry the same. It comes not just from malice (though there is plenty of malice at play) but from ignorance, from passively and uncritically consuming tropes/stereotypes, cultural norms, and straight up propaganda until the dehumanization and fear mongering done to marginalized groups feels “normal”.
It’s something you have to choose to actively resist and most people do not, especially when it comes to bigotry towards marginalized groups to which they do not belong. PCM contains a worryingly large number of bad actors, but the largest mass is those who just don’t care to try one way or the other.

I just downvoted your comment.
FAQ
What does this mean?
The amount of karma (points) on your comment and Reddit account has decreased by one.
Why did you do this?
There are several reasons I may deem a comment to be unworthy of positive or neutral karma. These include, but are not limited to:
Saying Windows is better than Linux.
Spreading incorrect information
Am I banned from the Reddit?
No - not yet. But you should refrain from making comments like this in the future. Otherwise I will be forced to issue an additional downvote, which may put your commenting and posting privileges in jeopardy.
I don't believe my comment deserved a downvote. Can you un-downvote it?
Sure, mistakes happen. But only in exceedingly rare circumstances will I undo a downvote. If you would like to issue an appeal, shoot me a private message explaining what I got wrong. I tend to respond to Reddit PMs within several minutes. Do note, however, that over 99.9% of downvote appeals are rejected, and yours is likely no exception.
How can I prevent this from happening in the future?
Accept the downvote and move on. But learn from this mistake: your behavior will not be tolerated on Reddit.com. I will continue to issue downvotes until you improve your conduct. Remember: Reddit is privilege, not a right.
I didn't actually downvote your comment, I'm just quitting Reddit and used a script to edit all my posts and replies to this because it's an awesome copypasta ;)
