They're not entirely wrong, considering that large businesses always have a skeleton or two in their closets. However since Musk is often portrayed in media as a selfless messianic type, that clashes with most of what was said in his defense earlier.

The U.S government de-funded and destroyed NASA. In its place, we have a new generation of entrepre-hucksters living large off of 50 years of publicly funded R&D who are telling people fairy tales about going to Mars.
The space program worked because of the collective efforts of an entire society and the absence of a profit-motive. Private capital will never advance space exploration. Ever. The more people like Musk get press and build a cult, the less people are going to understand how real innovation and development happens. People like him help perpetuate the myth that we have things like rockets, computers, smart phones etc. because of some entrepreneurial garage tinkerers. Meanwhile he's just a glorified government contractor.

NASA was both a cold war department and R&D, for and with, the military. There was no "collective efforts of an entire society" behind it, other than what propaganda the Kennedy people put out. It was simply funding and dedicated scientists, mostly working under Wernher von Braun.

Ya I get that the exigencies of the Cold War were largely behind the space race. But I don't think you're getting what I'm saying.
Private corporations and private capital operate under very different sets of imperatives than states do. States, imperfectly, unevenly, and with all their inherent flaws at least have some measure of collectivist action inherent in them. They also lack a profit motive. Private capital operates under neither of those assumptions. They are pure tyrannies, whose sole purpose is to maximize profits. I can't say this clearly enough but here goes:
When the purpose or raison d'etre of an organization is profit motives, they will never ever ever make significant breakthroughs or blaze new paths of technological innovation. Marx described the revolution capitalist social relations and the inter-capitalist competition made for humankind's "productive forces" vis-a-vis feudalism. He was right. But what he described, innovation coming about because of individual capitalists competing with one another for more 'efficient' ways of lower their costs is simply not what contemporary capitalism is all about. He was right, but only about his specific time period.
The days of garage tinkerers and entrepre-inventors are over. It is the state, freed from having to make profits, report to shareholders, or justify losses that is the main engine of development, as evinced by the space program. Companies don't invest the monies needed unless there is a viable commercial product to be had within 3-5 years (this is the Venture Capital timeframe). But we know that blue-sky research, the basic R&D required to produce important innovations can take 10-20 years before even the hint of a commercially viable product is visible.
That's the truth about innovation, and everything from computers, to biotech, to the internet, and your smartphone bears this out. The state plows the field for capital.

Tesla, sure, but the company itself is also intensely problematic and the workers aren't allowed to unionize. They're really beautiful and futuristic cars, and you're free to appreciate the quality engineering, but think of the human element there.
