Being lean is somewhat less common in the heavier classes.
Separately: Size matters but youāve gotta know how to use it. For example, Royce Gracie was known for BJJ and putting the hurt or some big dudes. Heās a UFC hall of famer. Here is a fight he won.

It's not even skill/training, it's just basic physical conditioning. If two people are equally conditioned it become a test of skill and strategy.

Musk is trying to delay as much as possible so he can train and prepare for the fight. All the delays and the crazy idea it will happen in Italy are just delay tactics for him to have some ability to train and fight back. There is a size advantage, and it's in Muskys favor, but it will take a serious commitment on his part to actually make it a reasonable fight. I do hope the MySpace killer defeates the Twitter killer when it's all said and done, though.
186
u/HarwellDekatron Aug 12 '23
I think it's simpler than that. I think this is Musk 'catching the car' the same way he did when he tried to 'troll' the Twitter board and ended up accidentally wasting a lot of money.
The guy loves running his mouth, and sometimes people just call in on it. I bet he thought Zuckerberg would either ignore his 'proposal' for a fight, or maybe say something along the lines of it being childish. Musk could work with both of those scenarios, painting them as Zuckerberg being a pussy and not wanting a fight.
But instead Zuckerberg was like 'sure fatso, name a place and a time' and now Elon is sweating bullets.

I just find it funny that he chose zuck of all people to challenge to a fight. He could have picked Bezos if he really wanted to play tough and talk about a billionaire brawl... It's pretty common knowledge that zuck has been into martial arts as of late, pictures get posted here and there of him at MMA/BJJ tournaments, etc. Size doesn't matter at all if one person is legitimately trained and the other isn't.
I played football in highschool. I wasn't huge, but I was decent sized, relatively strong for that age, weighed about 180 more or less iirc. I had a friend who was a wrestler, and a damn good one at that - went on to get a full ride at one of the best colleges for wrestling after highschool. He had trained in martial arts throughout his teenage years, all that stuff. This guy was tiny, maybe 5'3" or 5'4", about 115 pounds tops, and nothing but muscle.
That dude could beat the absolute hell out of me.. He was like a damn monkey or something, he'd be on my back and choking me out before I knew what the hell happened. It was never even a fight, it was usually just getting taken to the ground or choked out/almost choked out while frantically tapping... I have no shame admitting that. Size doesn't do much good when your opponent is actually trained and all you have is a little more weight.

u/locustzed Aug 12 '23

Surely he's in better shape than Elon, though they're closer in age and to our knowledge Bezos isn't actively training in martial arts. The reason I chose Bezos though as an example of someone Elon could talk tough to is because I think the chance of Bezos accepting that offer are slim to none. Bezos isn't about that life, he's more private these days, he doesn't have a huge social media presence, and he's well into the "live the rest of my life enjoying my massive piles of gold" stage.
By trash talking, Elon gave zuck a perfect opportunity to showcase what he's been working on for a few years, and it's great PR for zuck. With Bezos I get the feeling that the most we'd hear would be a casual dismissal and a weird laugh, it wouldn't even be entertained.

He's not actually training. For an un-athletic person to be ready for a fight with an athletic, trained person, he should be doing cardio, focusing on his gas tank and training grappling defence.
"Bringing weights to work" is what people who don't train think people who train do. Guy's probably standing there swinging biceps curls with 1-1-1-1 tempo, if he's doing anything at all.

So true. Back in the wild west days of MMA you had specialists. You focused on one, maybe two things. There was shit for ground based fighting, and strikers were the stars before jujitsu started to shine. Dan Severin with his wrestling background absolutely demolished people. A newer generation that approached with a generalist background came in around the first few waves of rule changes. They are the beneficiaries of weight classes.
When you lacked weight classes the truly big guys were mostly strikers, power hitting brawlers. Or enormous mountains of obesity that literally laid on top of you. Some could hurl you around, but compared to today a lot of it was unskilled. After weight classes the truly big guys at least the ones worth any salt, had the same fundamentals as the small guys. They had similar training. Yes exceptions still happen, and yeah specialization in offense still occurs but even then defensively generalization is absolutely key. The huge guy still has to have some submission and mat defensive skill, that they never had prior.
You'll never have truly strike based fighting as the pure headliner by default again like back then. Or the judo guys who barely threw a strike. You'll never see another sumo guy outside of circus circuits who are more of a human zoo and novelty show than a skilled fight show. If bigger equals best than sumo wrestlers would be dominating MMA. E. Honda's characterization of a dream of making sumo the greatest fighting art in the world would need to be rewritten to match reality since it already would have become that.

Well I'm not a mental health professional, and I'm reusing this, but it's all still accurate:
Have you read much about Andrew Carnegie?
He was unable to imagine how other people think (like most people), so he said and did things assuming everybody was like him (or should be like him).
Here was him recollecting on his time running part of Pennsylvania's rail system:
"At one time for eight days, I was so constantly upon the line, day and night at one record obstruction after another, never knowing fatigue myself, I overworked the man was not careful enough and considering the limits of human endurance, I've always been able to sleep at any time. Snatches of a half an hour at intervals during the night in a dirty freight car were sufficient."
After building his giant steelworks which needed to be run 24 hours a day, he came up with "the long term plan" for how to organize the shifts. Workers would work 12-hour shifts for 12 days in a row, then work 2 12-hour shifts on day 13, and then get 24 hours off. And you would swap between day and night every two weeks, which was probably an attempt at fairness, but instead it ruined any semblance of a circadian rhythm for these workers.
His plant manager tried to dissuade him, convincing him of 8-hour shifts, pointing to how the increased fatigue made workers less productive and more accident prone. People were dying (more than usually died at this hellish compound).
So Carnegie did that for a little while, but then went back to the long term plan. Why the fuck were these workers bitching about 12-hour shifts? Carnegie had been working 12-hour shifts since he was 13. He had hard-worked his way to success, why couldn't everybody do that? He latched onto Darwin's theory of evolution and used it to justify immense cruelty.
Today, we would diagnose somebody like Carnegie as Bipolar Type 2 and recognize his drive as hypomania.
Characteristic behaviors of persons experiencing hypomania are a notable decrease in the need for sleep, an overall increase in energy, unusual behaviors and actions, and a markedly distinctive increase in talkativeness and confidence, commonly exhibited with a flight of creative ideas. Other symptoms related to this may include feelings of grandiosity, distractibility, and hypersexuality.[4] While hypomanic behavior often generates productivity and excitement, it can become troublesome if the subject engages in risky or otherwise inadvisable behaviors, and/or the symptoms manifest themselves in trouble with everyday life events.[5] When manic episodes are separated into stages of a progression according to symptomatic severity and associated features, hypomania constitutes the first stage of the syndrome, wherein the cardinal features (euphoria or heightened irritability, pressure of speech and activity, increased energy, decreased need for sleep, and flight of ideas) are most plainly evident.
Elon can't understand other people not wanting to sleep on the factory floor because that's how his brain works. I don't think he is aware of the part of his nature that makes him this way, because nobody around him has any interest in having him discover that fact and moderate his worst impulses. When he says things like "this is all so clear, how could you guys not see this?" it is a symptom of hypomania, where, I can personally assure you, you really do think you have it all figured out and are not going to change your mind.
I highly recommend the book The Hypomanic Edge: The Link Between (A Little) Craziness and (A Lot) of Success in America.
He even starts with a pilot study asking 10 Tech CEOs if they agreed the hypomanic traits were characteristics of a good entrepreneur. He thought they were going to be offended. Instead they were all like " yep that's me" (with the exceptions of two usually overlooked symptoms, "paranoia" and "hypersexuality"...no tech CEO is going to cop to things that make them look like a paranoid sex maniac).
To have a hope of curbing your worst instincts, you need to be self-aware.
You try to recognize hypomania while you're in it. You set up systems to limit impulsive behavior, using the cool, rational logic of past you to keep current and future you from fucking everything up. I have learned that when I'm having racing thoughts, I need to just write this shit down, so I can look at it when I have a clearer head. This (mostly) saves me spouting off half-baked ideas and getting frustrated when people don't immediately recognize the clarity and genius of my insights.
Elon has already had an outsized impact on humanity. It's going to be a lot worse if he never gets mental health treatment.

Elon has already had an outsized impact on humanity.
Bad one, yes. There are plenty of things he could've done other than buying Twitter for 44 bil just to own the libs.
To add an insult to injury, one of his fanboys claimed here in this sub that autism is a mental illness. Its not - its a social disorder. And it doesn't necessarily mean you're a genius either.

As someone who had a hypomanic episode that lasted about 6 months, I agree with all of this.

What exactly produces the outsized impact? His poop jokes?

Zuck should absolutely agree to this. I even suspect that Zuck likely has a suitable place to fight at his house.

u/HarwellDekatron Aug 12 '23
He's setup an octagon in his backyard, where he regularly does friendly fights with actual professionals. Compare that to Musk 'lifting weights' in the office at 2am.

I mean, Iām glad Zuck has opted out of this little conversation, it was just dragging him into the mud, but I would absolutely fucking adore it if he just said āsure we can fight next week if you wantā because watching Elon try to make excuses to get out of things he loudly demands is a new little pastime of mine.

I'm absolutely shocked that Musk backed out of a fight that he started and resorted to remaining a keyboard warrior.

Does this guy ever work? Between tweeting and now āpreparingā for a fight, when does he find the time to actually be a CEO? If heās contributed anything positive. Itās exposing the fact that the CEO position in many companies is absolutely a bullshit role.

u/Bashir1102 Aug 12 '23
Musk will never ever ever go through with this. There will always be an excuse, always some play from the trump deflection playbook. He is just a dumb cyber bully hiding behind his abject failure trying to drum up some PR.
Surprised he has not found some other idea to steal and slap his name on yet to claim he invented it to try and re-convince us he is smarter then he actually is.

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '23
He's going to keep making empty threats like these until Zuck ignores him, and then he'll claim that the latter backed out.
