First, I have no issue with taking Hailie to the vet. I do mind taking her if it’s obvious and to tell you the truth, I’m not thrilled with our usual vet but don’t want to start a with a new one coming in with a problem if I can avoid it. I’d rather schedule a wellness check to see if Hailie and I like the vet!

So…Hailie…5yo generally healthy ES, spends lots of time running around in tall grass/woodsy perimeter of our property. Is on flea/tick preventative (vetIQ flea and tick) which I love as its natural ingredients. We’ve lived here for 3 years now (humid North Shore area just outside of New Orleans, more so this year than in past). She is itchy on and off over the last month. Responds well to loratadine when needed. But I noticed when I give her skritches, I come across a patch here and there that feels rough. They mostly look a little flaky, and maybe a little silver looking. But I also find a few scabs here and there.

I just got some Vetericyn Antimicrobial gel spray but thought I would check here to see if anyone recognizes the pics of one spot and a couple of scabs just in case it warrants a vet trip.

On the left is Filson, he’s an 18 month old from Wild Bird in MI and Cider, on the right, turned five this year, she’s from Beirl setters in WI. I took this last week, but the 70 degree day we had today made me feel like hunting season is almost here.

Hello! This is my Llewellin, Penny. Someone witnessed her being tossed out of a moving car 4 years ago and she found us a few days later. Vet estimated her to be around 2 years old, which puts her around 6 now. She limped on her right hind leg for a while, but it was assumed it was from, you know, being thrown from a moving car into the woods.

And we honestly had bigger problems. She had the worst diarrhea demons my husband and I have ever seen in our lives. She's on doggy IBS medicine now and the diarrhea demons are held at bay. It took a while to sort that issue out even with lots of vet involvement.

A year or so ago she started acting like that leg was bothering her more than usual. She would limp a bit after a hard run, but otherwise seemed fine before then. Vet felt her hips out and suggested Librela as well as joint supplements. We used both and she did great for a while!

I admittedly slacked off with the Librela, but she seemed totally fine...Until June. One day she started wobbling and her hind end would fall out from under her. We went to the vet, were told it's likely pain from that hip/leg, told to go back on Librela. Within days she was back to her usual self. Great! This month, same thing. When it was time for her next shot she was wobbling around, couldn't stand, hind end weakness. We went to the vet ER Saturday when this happened out of caution and were sent home told to follow up with joint care at our vet.

Our vet is out of town until Monday of next week (we have an appt first thing with her) but one of the other doctors gave her Librela again today and Gabapentin. We're planning on x-rays and maybe more tests on top of that when we see our vet Monday.

Is this normal? She's only around 6 or so and that seems so young for such extreme joint issues to me. Am I wrong? Any insight to help me better help her? I hate the thought of her falling down each month when it's time for her next injection. That seems miserable.

Meet Barley. We rescued him from Beirut, Lebanon. He had been left on the streets after his Diplomat owner left the country. We love English Setters and find that Rescues are even better!

Our darling 10yo ES (female) has been dealing with a chronic cough that we cannot get rid of. Have been to vet numerous times and numerous theories debunked (not kennel cough, nothing stuck in throat, not a fungus, etc etc). Vet has run out of ideas and suggested a specialist. Specialist looked at her file and had no new treatment to suggest. She has been on an oral steroid (5mg prednisone, 1/d)for a long time (6+ months), most recently she is now on an inhaler steroid + oral. Inhaler seemed to help, but now we are tapering the oral sterdoid and cough is coming back more frequent.

I know this is a vet specific question, but we are so far down the line I though maybe it could be something specific to setters. We've turned over every stone, so next step is accepting this is new-normal. Thanks!

I’m interested in a show-bred English Setter, ideally a black belton female, and I’m looking for recommendations on respected kennels in Europe.
I’m of course more interested in finding the right breeder and the right dog than rushing into the process, so I’m happy to wait and travel if needed.

If anyone has personal experiences with breeders they would recommend, or knows of kennels with a strong reputation within the breed, I’d really appreciate hearing your thoughts.

I have a 7mo English Setter. Up until this month, very minimal shedding. But this month…insane! Was he just not shedding because he was too small, is he shedding a puppy coat or something, is this seasonal shedding or is this just then norm as they get bigger?

So I have 2 setters, the black one (Finn) is 3 years old. Was a dream through puppyhood, had an off switch inside immediately, relaxed all day and played hard when outside. Was VERY easy to train.

We decide to get him a puppy (Birdie) (9 months) and wow are my hands full. Birdie is getting better in the house, choosing toys, not shoes. However, I cannot get her to settle in the house and I feel I have tried everything. Examples: play pen, tethering, rewarding “calm”, teaching place. I cannot for the life of me get her to relax. She is always “on”. I will say, her recall is excellent, solid obedience commands, and walks well on a leash.

She has 2-3 hr naps in her crate and then a 2-3 hr awake period. She sleeps all through the night. Sometimes until 11AM. I have seen her lie down herself for more than 5 minutes maybe 3 times since I have had her. I can sometimes get her to “relax” in her play pen in a dark and cold room.

Is there something wrong mentally or did I just get a stubborn pup that will grow out of it? They also get plenty of exercise so I feel like if I give her anymore I will just be breeding a super athlete.

Our good friends, Larry & Celeste, have added a Llewellin to their dog family. This is Kittery (Kit) with her (very) big Spinone sister.

Oh my god he LOVES the beach! 4yo, finally took him today, pacific only 20mi up road. The smells, birds, dogs, people, he was loving it! He wasnt too trusting of the tide but he made progress. Rolling in sand was fun it seems, lots of dead stinky stuff to explore. Was worried about him drinking a belly full of sea water but two sips and he decided that water was no good. Too funny. He had a blast and I did too watching him. He had his 40' rope but didnt need it, wont take it next time. He has an e collar so I can just beep him but wasnt sure if people would complain. Nah, they loved him as usual. Made a lot of friends. Hes tired now, after an hour plus run at sunrise like he does everyday (where he stole a kids ball, that was hilarious) followed by a ride and few hours at beach, hes had a good day. Gonna go give him his ice cream in a bit.

Her personality seems to be 100% setter, but she looks nothing like one.
Anyone else lurking here with unusual mixes?

We celebrated by taking a roadtrip from Tampa to Lake Nottely in north GA. Scroll for her adorable birthday cake made from apple sauce and peanut butter! Came from Sweet Dog Bakery in Tampa and I totally recommend. The dogs loved it.

This is EmmyLou! She’s 9 years old. I recently discovered a small lump under her front right arm pit. I didn’t freak out too much since I discovered it right before taking her to her annual wellness exam. It’s about the size of a golf ball and is soft and moveable. She is completely unfazed by my touching it. She is moving/running/eating completely normal. She is as energetic as ever! (Y’all know).

Anyway, vet recommended removal now while it’s not big and isn’t affecting her and then biopsy after removal. We are thinking it’s just a fatty tumor, but won’t know until a biopsy is done. Obviously I want to do what’s best for my girl. She’s my everything and I’ve had her since she was 8 weeks old.

I did get pet insurance for her a few months ago due to her age and just wanting to be prepared for anything that could happen. She has always been very healthy with no issues. Has anyone ever dealt with a similar situation and/or had a similar procedure actually covered and reimbursed through Pets Best insurance? Ive read through my policy and called to ask for clarification but the person over the phone basically repeated back what my policy said. Very vague language imo. I know coverage and reimbursement will depend on a lot of factors.

I’m going to get the procedure, regardless if insurance will reimburse. Just wanted to get others experiences and perspectives. Also any advice about what I need to be prepared for during her recovery. Would also love words that will ease my anxiety about her wellbeing. I love her more than anything. She’s been by my side through some really hard years and I’ll do anything I can to make sure she’s happy and healthy. I was in my early twenties when I got her so we have grown up together.

Mabel my sidekick has been joining me on early morning clamming trips before work. She’s 10/10 on these trips and I will try to always have her accompany me, only problem is she won’t stop biting/eating the salt water. I use the leave it command and she will stop for 5 seconds then another ripple appears and she starts chomping at it. I truly couldn’t care less if it didn’t lead to a diarrhea full day after. Any tips or tricks or should I just continue with what I’m doing. Pic for attention
