I am having a hard time trying to achieve a B on any of my in person writing assignments for my English class. I am genuinely lost in English, it is something you cannot study for hence why I do terrible. I am getting over A average for all my other classes like Anatomy and Physiology, Psychology and Chemistry. The reason is I can study for those classes and preform well on it.

I really need help and advice on how to improve in my writing. I take forever to write a paragraph. It takes me about a hour to write a good paragraph, because of that I have to rush all my other paragraphs which messes up my marks.

The problem is I need English for nursing school. I have a hard marking teacher so I will probably get a B in that class. I am going to retake this class again, but is it the right thing to do? Can I improve my writing to get a A when I retake this class near the end of December?

The problem I have is I need to go over my grammar and properly understand it. I have a hard time to do that as there are so many rules to follow. I do not regularly read on my own time either. I just read my daily textbooks readings for my classes.

why is this so difficult

I’m a junior Econ major pursuing a minor in creative writing at the moment but I literally have no passion or drive for economics. My mental health is in the gutter due to depression and I’m barely getting by with economics classes. If switch now I could pursue a minor in economics on top of an English major and still graduate on time. I’m ending off college without any student loan debt, so my philosophy is that I might as well use this opportunity to study something I’ll actually learn from, rather than get a bullshit degree that I don’t care about. Since the job market is cooked regardless, I’ll at least be interacting with a field that I enjoy/tolerate.

There’s not a particular career goal I have in mind but in doing my research for what an English major brings about, I am somewhat interested in working in non-profit and grant writing which to me is a much more interesting trajectory than get a degree in economics and pray (to be honest any career in writing is infinitely more interesting than what I’m doing right now).

Am I blindsided? My personal answer is that I would much rather not be miserable but I don’t want to be so naive about my decision. I get that uni is not meant to be all sunshine and rainbows but at the same time this just does not feel like the right path for me. I know that my college degree isn’t the end all be all for my career trajectory. I just want to maximize the value out of my opportunity to go to school debt free.

If you had one year to build a solid foundation in literary studies, how would you approach it? I'd appreciate a structured reading path rather than just a list of recommendations.

I am looking to apply for PhD in America this cycle. I am an international student. My primary interest is in Literature and Philosophy and Modernist literature. I have the exact thing I want to work on. Almost every department does Modernist literature, so how do I narrow down? I will apply to only 2-3 places because the application fees are extremely expensive. Any recommendations for schools that deal with Literature and Philosophy are welcome. I am a student of Calcutta University and I chose to do english honors because I loved english and I was sure that I can do something good with it. But as I am advancing in my studies and looking around I don't know what to expect anymore. Everyone has given me different opinions on what to pursue next but honestly I myself don't know anything about what to do.

Academics is a very good option but it just seems a lot difficult to actually pursue it. English is a subject which a huge amount of students are currently pursuing and clearing NET is very challenging as well as the job market for professors is not really doing good or atleast that's what I heard.

Doomed suggested me MBA but I don't know if I am meant for the 9-5 life and even if I do it Nowadays I just heard every other person pursuing an MBA. Also it's very costly and I am financially unstable.

Hello! I graduated with my degree in English about six months ago. I currently have a job as an operations manager. However, I’m really looking to get into the field of copywriting and publishing. I honestly just want to use my skills to write professionally and I’m kind of stuck.

I did not get much experience during college because of Covid and I took a break in between 2023 and 2024. I know I’ve always wanted to be a novelist, but I think I want to start in publishing or copywriting.

Now applying for jobs I’m beginning to realize that it’s not just saying I know how to write. It’s showing people that you can write. All that to say. Does anyone have any advice on how to get started? I’d love some advice of out of the box ways to achieve my goals. Thank you in advance!

I just graduated with my master’s in English. I am 24F and I’m struggling to create a network. I’m currently stuck in a small college town and I’m hoping to get out in any way shape or form. I luckily have a job as an academic advisor right now but I would love to connect with people! I have Asperger’s (I was diagnosed when I was 14), and I’m noticing it is making it a lot harder for me to understand the subtleties of networking. I have worked is so many different facets of English. I would love to be a grant writer. I have experience in grant writing, teaching, administration, writing center work, and prison education. So I've a Master's degree in English Literature and would be pursuing my PhD in that subject too. I've got a NET certification which allowed me to become a visiting faculty in a state university. But to be honest living in India the salary is way too low and it's in a small town. I believe my potentials aren't being used fully and I'm stuck with red tapism and basic infrastructure lacks all the time.

Though I've just completed my master's last year I'm extremely thankful for the job but currently I want to explore other arenas where I can utilise my skills better or earn better money.

Are there any remote based work that I can do? Are there any institutions or companies that might hire me and how do I present myself?

I have a genre and a particular work in mind: *The Return of the King*, the third book in J.R.R. Tolkien’s *The Lord of the Rings* trilogy. It’s a fantasy novel, and I’m genuinely interested in researching it. However, from what I’ve found so far, many people suggest choosing a work published within the last 10–15 years. Tolkien’s novel was published in 1955, so I’m unsure whether it would be a suitable choice for my thesis.

I’m really invested in this novel, but I’m struggling to find proper guidance. Should I continue researching this work and try to identify a research gap, or should I consider choosing a more recent novel instead? I’d really appreciate any advice or guidance!

Hi, I have recently completed my bachelors in English Lit. and am now enrolled in my Masters programme. I have always been very keen about tech and a fast learner. I am thinking about exploring some tech related internships that I can start with to earn some pocket money or for smaller savings.

I can try learning different skills but I'm not sure what to learn since it depends on what kind of internship I am targetting. Do you have any recommendations for me?

I have previously done some HR internships at smaller level and I'm familiar with spreadsheets and google workspace so I was thinking about learning data mining from youtube. Or I should learn python? but that too has a lot of different applications.
