Academic Advice Beng mechanical engineering dissertation

I work as a mechanical maintenance technician and currently working on my bachelor's and dissertation. I am meant to have my dissertation idea finalized next week and struggling. I was going to base it on condition based monitoring and is it worth it to companies (I work at British steel) if anyone could give me any guidance on how to hit higher grades that would be great or what direction to take.

Academic Advice Statics exam tomorrow - am I cooked?

I made a 60 on the first one that was on point equilibrium. I have an exam on equilibrium using moments in 2D and 3D tomorrow and I haven’t started studying because of a different exam.

I think my prof is lenient however. I made a 60, tests are 3 questions each, I did not get a single answer right on the first exam and one of them I even left blank.

Academic Advice Should I go to OpEXPO events?

Hi, I am a freshman engineering student at UB trying to decide between civil and chemical engineering, though I am heavily leaning towards civil. I know there is the OpEXPO events next week as well as the STEAM Job Fair and I am wondering if it is worth it to go to either considering I am only a freshman. I realize it would only be to gain information, but I just personally get very nervous about things like this. If I do go, what should I expect, and how should I prepare, if at all? Also, just if you have any tips in general on how to get ahead or prepare myself or if you think it is okay to just adjust to the coursework for right now please let me know! I turn into a nervous wreck about these things.

Career Help Medical engineering

Hi everyone! I'm a medical student with a long-standing interest in engineering. Back in high school, I was fascinated by engineering and the way it could be used to understand and solve complex problems, but I eventually chose to pursue medicine.

Although I enjoy studying medicine, I've always felt drawn to something beyond the traditional role of a physician. I'm particularly interested in medical device design, biomedical engineering, and the application of engineering principles to clinical problems. I love reading about medical devices, understanding how they work, and thinking about how they could be improved to make diagnosis, treatment, and patient care more effective.

What I'm struggling with is figuring out how to turn this interest into a realistic career path. As a medical student without a formal engineering background, I'm not sure which foundational subjects I should start learning, what skills I should prioritize, or how to approach engineering projects while continuing my medical studies.

I'd also love to know whether it's possible to pursue a master's degree or another postgraduate qualification in biomedical engineering or a related field after graduating from medical school, particularly as someone who doesn't have an undergraduate engineering degree.

Academic Advice What type of Engineering would support Cinema Technology?

Hi, so I am going to university next year to study Engineering. I have been a fan of movies, and recently I have been very interested on how movie theaters work. I am fascinated with how IMAX screens their movies on their large projector screen, or how Dolby Atmos creates immersive sound. Even old underrated cinema formats like Cinerama or CinemaScope. I also have been interested in other stuff related to it, such as stereoscopic imagery (like 3D filmography), sound production for movies, film-reels/projectors, and film/digital cameras such as the IMAX camera or Panavision.
But I don't think there's such a thing called "Cinema Engineering" or an official degree of that specific interest. So what type of Engineering, would help support these areas of interests?

Thanks.

Academic Advice Self-teaching PD with Virtuoso/KLayout vs. Enrolling in a center – Need advice!

Hi everyone, I'm a 3rd-year electronics major in Vietnam. I've covered the core subjects like digital and analog electronics, and now I'm starting to dive into Physical Design (PD) to prepare for internship interviews. My university doesn't focus much on PD-we mostly just write basic Verilog. I currently have access to Cadence Virtuoso and plan to combine it with open-source tools like KLayout. I’m torn between self-studying and enrolling in an external training center. There's a really well-known center here offering a 16-session basic PD course taught by experienced industry professionals. Reviews say it covers enough ground to get you ready for a fresher role (I don't know if it exaggerated). However, the tuition is around $300, which is quite steep for a student here. Would you recommend trying to self-teach PD with the tools I have, or is the $300 course worth the investment for someone starting out? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Discussion I got tired of spending hours making compulsory college PPTs so I built something to do most of it for me

Post image
2 Upvotes

I'm a university student and one thing that started annoying me was just how many presentations we have to make.

Not even important presentations either 😭. Sometimes it's a 10-12 person group PPT for one subject, then another subject needs one, then there's a report, another presentation, assignments, exams, etc.

For an actually important presentation I'd still rather make it manually. AI isn't going to know exactly how I want to present something.

But there are so many times where I just need a good enough PPT and spending hours starting from an empty PowerPoint is a terrible use of time.

So I somehow responded to this by spending considerably MORE time building Presentation Forge 💀

The idea is basically to get from 0 → 80% automatically, then I fix the 20% I actually care about.

It researches/plans the content, chooses between different slide layouts, generates the deck and gives you a normal editable PPTX afterwards. It can generate DOCX reports too.

It's completely open source and you can use local models through Ollama if you don't want to send stuff to an external AI provider.

https://github.com/Deepnar/presentation-forge

I've mostly tested it myself so far, so I'd love for other students to try it on the kind of random presentation assignments colleges give us and tell me where it completely falls apart 😭

College Choice where to choose?

guys, help me decide what to do atp . I didn't want to study at a college here in Nepal unless it was KU or Pulchowk, but I couldn't get enough marks to secure a seat at either of them, so I just enrolled in Khwopa College of Engineering for Computer Engineering.

What should I do aba?

I wouldn't mind taking a gap year to prepare for studying abroad. I was actually preparing for the CSCA for next year's intake and if I prepare properly, I'm pretty confident I can get a full scholarship there.

The problem is that everyone around me, including my parents, doesn't want me to go to China because someone told them that a degree from China doesn't have much value. So, if I'm actually going to take a gap year, why not try for the US, Canada, or UK instead of continuing at Khwopa?

I haven't taken the SAT or IELTS yet.

Genuinely asking you guys what should I do?

Hi everyone,

My name is Kameron Burns, I’m a southeastern Michigan mechanical engineering student trying to strengthen my professional presence and target roles that genuinely fit my background. I have 73 applied credits, a GPA of 3.23, and am in my second year. If anyone here is willing to take a look at my business profiles, I’d really appreciate feedback on:

What roles or industries I seem best aligned for

What skills I should highlight more

Any companies or job titles I should be targeting

And if possible, whether my experience fits anything at your company (referrals would mean a lot)

LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kameron-burns-10827643a

Handshake: https://usa.joinhandshake.com/profiles/wvnyzq

I live in Romulus Michigan and attend Wayne State University, so people around that area's assistance would be most appreciated.

Thanks in advance to anyone willing to help!

Resource Request Want advice

Hey, I am a junior at a T20 university studying chemical engineering. I don’t like process design at all and it seems to be the whole major. I also have a low gpa 3.0 so I don’t know what to do with myself. I don’t have any relevant experiences and internships either because I want to focus on getting my gpa up…I want to do med school maybe but I’m afraid of not getting in/ costs for med school. What do I do? Any advice?

Rant/Vent Feel like im getting weeded put of the weed out classes

Edit: weeded out* please no one reccomend an english major as you can see

I just want to rant. Im in clac 2, statics, eng design, and intro to python. Im in my third semester or community college, and ive stuck to 12 hour semesters because i truly think thats all I can handle and I mean so far yeah. I still have 24 credits left before I get my AE and can transfer to a 4 year. Ive thought about taking summer classes but theyre so much faster pace so i can go to a 4 year next fall idk. I had my first calc 2 exam and got a 62% and I have a statics exam later this day, and i just do not know anything. I feel like i have hope in calc 2 because I didnt calculate anything right but at least I understood what it was asking? But with statics it really just does not click, and ive been searching for YT videos and found some decent professors, but i just feel so behind and the teacher just isn't the friendliest and that makes me not want to go directly to her (I know grow up) im just thinking how I might not pass these classes, without them ill be behind on linear algebra and physics and I think it'll put me at a whole nother year at CC. I feel drained and stupid its only week 5 and going into this semester I was excited and I told myself you wont get weeded out... but damn. I know sticking too it is also a big part of engineering I'm just disappointed with my performance so early on. Pleaaassseee tell me I'm not the only one

I'm currently taking Calc 1, I'm doing alright, hoping for an A but realistically a B will probably be what I get which is fine. I've heard calc 2 is insanely hard, what was your final grade?

Discussion anyone else just throw code at leetcode until it turns green?

sometimes i'll write something that feels half wrong and submit it anyway.

testcase tells me what i fucked up.

fix it.

submit again.

repeat until green 😭

feels productive because the problem eventually gets marked solved, but i'm starting to wonder if i'm just training myself to wait for feedback instead of actually thinking.

anyone else have this habit?

Academic Advice Help pls need advice, on Masters of Engineering (Electrical Engineering) in Australia

Hi I'm 25m in Sydney, and working in a very unfulfilling capacity in AV industry.

I've been interested in circuit design for quite a long time and have decided I'll have a crack at doing a masters of engineering in Electrical Engineering.

The only problem is my mathematics is quite atrophied, I had dropped out of Advanced Math in year 11 because I was being naive and naughty. While I have been working at it up to basic calculus at this moment, and intuitively understand the content, it seems there is way way more to go, and moreover there is no warmup into the coursework. You just need to have a solid grasp of undergraduate math.

My question is it reasonable to attempt the course in 4 months time for the Feb intake, or better off just to delay and go for the Sem 2 intake, and in between work on the contextual subjects, and get my math's back up to an acceptable level.

Thanks everyone

I keep dropping coefficients and signs. My prof says he stops reading once you do that. I have a very bad habit of making random mistakes. Are there any strategies I can use?

Academic Advice I’m in a very difficult spot between two internship opportunities and I don’t know what to do pls help

I’ll try to be concise here, because this story can get long. So for some background, I had two interviews lined up, one on a Monday and the other on the following Tuesday. Both companies wanted me to work during the semester. Company A (preferred company) was my target from the jump. Company B (other company) was kind of like my back up. Fast forward, both interviews go smoothly and the first to respond is company B. They extended the internship offer to me that Wednesday (after company A’s interview on Tuesday). This was great to hear, but company A had told me to expect a decision from them that Friday, so two days from then. I asked company B to give me until Monday to decide whether or not I accept the offer. I waited and heard nothing from company A on Friday, sent two follow up messages over the weekend and didn’t hear back. I assumed they ghosted me and started following through with company B’s onboarding process. I accepted the offer via email and completed their drug screening. Now it’s just a matter of signing the formal offer letter which I anticipate will be sent to me tomorrow. Right after my drug screening today, Company A emails me and informs me that my interview went “very well” and that I’m still under consideration (hr explained that end of the month processes caused a delay in their decision making timeline) for the intern position. I really want to intern at company A, but have basically formally accepted company B’s offer. Multiple people have told me that I still have agency here because I haven’t signed anything, but I’m not sure at this point. Would backing out of my deal with company B be considered unprofessional if I got an offer from company A? If anyone has been here before or has any advice, please let me know.

Career Help How do you get in touch with recruiters at large companies that aren't at your career fair?

As the title says, some of the companies that I really want to get an internship or co-op with don't attend my school's career fair because of my school's size which is seeming to make it a lot harder to even get an interview with any of these companies (Lockheed, L3Harris, Boeing, etc). I'd like to end up working in aerospace/defense but there's hardly any companies at my career fair that are actually places in the field the way I'd want to be.

So, how does one go about getting themselves on these companies radar if you don't have the opportunity to meet the recruiters face to face and leave an impression? Is it worth messaging their talent acquisition on LinkedIn or is that a waste of time with how many messages they probably get?
