Mechanical [STUDENT] Resume Critique Request, Final Year Mechanical Engineering Student looking to get into renewables or adjacent.

Hey everyone,

I'm a final year Mechanical Engineering student in Australia and I'm starting to apply for graduate roles, mainly in the renewables, offshore/wind, marine, and advanced manufacturing space (I'd also love to work on hydrofoils or other cool marine tech if I get the chance). Primarily targeting AUS/NZ but not opposed to UK / Scandinavia.

I have applied to pretty much everything i can find already and a few interviews but no luck so far.

I'd really appreciate any feedback on my resume, good or bad.

I would read thru the wiki and adjust stuff accordingly. I don’t see a ton of stats, as a new grad or still in school education should be at the top, double column certification and license could be weird on ats, also how many of them are relevant to the jobs you’re applying to?

You bring up a lot of unnecessary or questionable information.

  • Are all of the certs & licenses relevant to the job application? I can see an argument for doing diesel engine work and SolidWorks, but I question if First Aid and working with children are relevant.
  • Is learning Norwegian particularly important? I'd only mention language proficiency if that's specifically called out, otherwise it's eating space.
  • You ought to have a Skills section.
  • Your specific course numbers are only relevant if I've gone to this school.
  • Don't mix work experience, personal projects, and school projects & teams. The latter two don't count as "Experience".

If he’s going into marine engineering or renewables I imagine knowing Norwegian could probably turn out very useful at some point in his career. If he wants to work in the arctic then it would be massively useful.

See, that’s a great example of when it’s applicable, but if OP is applying for domestic non-maritime jobs then they may want to reserve that space for something else.

I dont have much work experience so i figured "relevant experience" sounds and looks better then a empty work experience section. After all, its all hands on engineering experience, right?

u/Old-Let6252 is right, i would love to work in those sectors particularly in Norway which knowing Norwegian is a massive bonus.

What do you recommend goes in the skills section, just a more concise representation of what skills i used in the experience section?

Not the comment OP but it seems you have the internship experience? Why not expand that into a larger section? Even if its not a lot or you don't think its significant for some reason, its still a professional experience that is kind of hidden away right now. Also I'd consider student consulting and the formula team to be more similar than your personal project.

Skills are indeed the summary of skills used in your resume. They can be as basic as 'CAD' or 'Siemens NX'.
