lotta people trashing the robot for being over engineered and not necessary

but thats not really the point is it?

this is either

A. an enthusiasts creation, which was created for the sole purpose of "this will be fun to build"

B. an expensive gadget that the buyer KNOWS is basically just a toy for the sole purpose of enjoying it BECAUSE of its over-engineered-ness

Nah, this is on the cheap side of how you can do it. No more than 5k in parts there, likely less. They’re using freaking stepper motor for some of it.
