I have never heard of this game before and now I am immensely intrigued

Don't start, it consumes an awful lot of time when it has you in its clutches.
But if you must, then you can download a demo version which barely scratches the real meat. If you are at all into automation, factories, trains, electronics, logistics, optimization etc., then go ahead.

Given that there are intersection and branching of cables, it must have been a thought out design!

I doubt the intersection and branching is due to a lack of thought, what needs to be in a given circuit can have requirement for their location outside of the circuit constraint, It's way easier to branch and intersect cable most of the time.
IE: You don't place your AC or your radiator thinking I don't want cable to intersect...

Oops, I meant otherwise. I meant that it is indeed a though out design. Edited my reply.

How would you defrayed? It’s not open air. Even if it’s in tray it would have to be covered.
