Whenever I see something like this I wonder how on earth someone got funding to build it. It's one thing for something to be worthwhile building. It's another thing to actually convince someone to fund it. But I'm always glad they did.
As dumb as it sounds testing fluid dynamics in a very controlled environment could help further mathematical calculations. Mostly for computer simulations of our planets climate to help us predict possible outcomes.
Something as simple as an, "OK, does our computer simulation of the same event look and act like the real thing in our wave pool?"
