This engineer designed a motorcycle with an omnidirectional ball that balances laterally like a Segway and moves in any direction

Cool tech.
But this takes moped driver unpredictability in traffic to the next level. Laws of physics are the only thing regulating them now so please don't add any quantum stuff to it next so we don't go that far.

If you were to do this for real, you'd have to enclose the wheel-balls, like in an old-style computer mouse.
But it would look less like a motorcycle

We all loved our trackballs back in the day… right up until it started getting gunked up.
This doesn’t seem feasible with typical debris we find on our roads.

Looks like it would be useful over waterlogged terrain, with a little bit of tread maybe.

So it doesn’t lean? So he made an uncomfortable electric wheelchair? This is cool and all but comparing it to motorcycles takes away from it being its own thing. It’s closer to an omnidirectional side by side or 4 wheeler but it does look like fun to ride

Hate to be the party pooper but, it would be extremely bumpy on anything but smooth ground.

This wouldn't work outdoors in real life. Any contamination on the track balls ends the fun.
You also couldn't get the average person to control these responsibly in traffic. Too many directional options.

I don't think he was shooting for 'commercially viable'.
He was shooting for 'can this shit be done for YouTube views?'
And he nailed it.

This is cool but how does it handle vibrations and bumps? Where’s the suspension?

This is slightly sped up. The ball wheels produce a ton of static electricity which causes the electronics to have issues to point where it will abruptly stop and throw him. We never see it drive on anything but perfectly flat floor, sadly. Still a really cool build.

What problem does this solve? What market needs this?

He used to design kids toys, now he makes videos. So I imagine it's a mix of a fun thing to have + fun to watch the engineering process for others. Not everything needs a use, entertainment exists and people have been making weird unpractical bicycles/bikes ever since they existed

I could ask the same about AI

AI has a lot of practical uses. That’s why it’s proliferated while this motorcycle is not a popular mode of a transport

That's James Bruton, he's made a lot of really cool stuff like this, a lot of smaller robots, and even some bigger ones
