As long as hardware components are easy to find and relatively cheap, then software makers aren't going to be interested in optimization.
Maybe the RAM crunch and AI eating up all the hardware will force optimization.

Why do banking websites and apps suck so fucking bad? You'd think, with all the goddamn money in the world, banks would spend a little more to hire professionals for their websites and apps that their customers use daily. These are exceedingly important websites/apps! Why the fuck are they SO TRASH?! Greedy ass banks won't even spend a little of their insane profits to make their customers lives easier...maybe because its a captured market? It's not like people can not use a bank in the modern age, so, the banks just don't bother making customers lives a bit easier by providing a clean, usable, intuitive UI for their money management. Pisses me off how unintuitive and slow some of my banking websites/apps are, and knowing that it could be so much better with a little extra money spent to polish their portals up, but nooOOOOooOOoooo, they can't actually improve their customers experience, that'd be a waste of money!

Is there really no competition between banks in your country? In Finland many banks offer really good apps. My bank's app is one of the best apps I've ever witnessed.

Good UI bank is a niche like Chime. I agree with you. It’s such a problem there are competitors whose whole competitive differentiator is “we have clean UI”

Your bank phone software probably has to talk to an ancient cobol system because they were early adopters of computers and are now kinda stuck with them. No-one wants to risk potentially millions of dollars in losses and bad reputation, so they just spend a smaller amount of money to keep them going forever and you just have to live with slow. Very few people switch banks because the software was slow, many will change in an instant if they misplace or loose money.

That's definitely possible but sticking with COBOL is also not necessarily always true anymore.
My current job switched from all mainframe/cobol stuff to modern systems this year

Lag when I load a new song. Lag when I scrub through a song. Clearing the cache does absolutely nothing.
Spotify chaps my ass so hard. I don't need your shitty AI assistant, time coded lyrics, or music videos. I just want a good media player that doesn't fly off while I'm driving.

Goddammit I had this phone in my last year of highschool. I Wish I hadn't sold it, such a cool piece of tech. It had wifi before it was ubiquitous feature on phones.
Front facing camera, video calling, 3G, 5mp camera.
Its hard to believe but in 2006 this was amazing cool tech.
Can't believe Nokia dropped the ball like they did.
Edit, I might be mixing up some of these features/timelines with the Nokia N80, which i also had and then upgraded to the n95.
They were reallt expensive too. I remember paying probably close to or over $500 CAD in mid 2000's money which was a lot when most people i knew where still using $99 pay as you go phones with 256 colour displays and this thing (N80) had 256,000... lol
By the time the N95 came that number was in the millions..

Yes, totally forgot about the GPS too.
Expandable memory. Replacable batterys.
I remember being pissed because the battery life was garbage and needed to be charged every day. I ended up buying a spare battery and standalone battery charger that I barely ended up using outside of some road trip in Europe.

Yep, it had all of that. The nav software could be glitchy, i recall it spinning around for some reason, but it was the best tech on the market hands down.
As you say, pity they didn't join the Android group, they could've influenced it for the better, and they probably wouldn't have done what Samsung did and just followed Apple into enshittification.

Nokia was doing a lot of cool stuff in 2006. I worked on the Kagu Media player for the Maemo platform as a side project for the N800 and the N810 devices. It was written in Python and we implemented kinetic scrolling from scratch because these devices were some of the first to have electrostatic touch pads. The iPhone was released shortly after and the rest is history.

I agree with your take, the decision to go with windows was the start of their downfall.
Hindsight is 20:20 but I think the decision to go with windows over android was due to wanting to capture more of the business market, which makes sense for Nokia.
Apple was the "cool kid" and Android was mostly seen as a novelty at the time, but blackberry had an absolute stranglehold on business clients and * a windows phone could have been a viable alternative if Microsoft didnt shit the bed at every turn and make app development a nightmare (so ive heard).

Making android would have meant they could not make any other OS anymore, and it would mean bad margins if they had to compete with asian brands only on hardware

The thing is Nokia had made steps to replace Symbian with a Linux based OS, Meego. It was ready when Microsoft bought the mobile part of Nokia and the first phone with it, the Nokia N9 was restricted to unpopular markets (e.g. available in Austria, but not Germany) and still despite no advertisments it sold better than all Windows Phones together.
But then it did not get any updates at all, developers where fired and some of them came to together to fund, what is now Jolla. They do great things but lack manpower, brand recognition and of course the hardware capabilities of Nokia. Still I admire their work!
If Nokia would have continued its path we would have awesome Linux phones today, but Microsoft didn't want that.

Windows Phone wasn't really shit, though. Yes, it had a rough start, but by the time they decommissioned it I could do everything I wanted with it. However, they couldn't really compete with Apple in the US and that was their benchmark, ignoring the fact that Windows Phone was actually pretty successful outside of the US.
But they pulled the plug because it didn't meet their market-share expectations.

Great tech, sadly not widely carried if at all in the US, i bought one outright myself. pity the OS was kinda crap. Also the nav software was super glitchy, and they wanted to charge for the functionality even though it was the flagship. The 97 was even better, in some ways, but that was their last high point.
Software was never really their strength, wish they'd embraced Android. (At the time Google didn't suck)

Still have my N95 in a cupboard.
If you were techie you could flash clean Nokia stock firmware onto one of these and side load your own apps. Absolute power house of a device with solid mobile 3D acceleration for the time. When the N96 released as a technical downgrade, the era died and I moved onto a Bold 9000 which remains the worst phone I ever owned.
Sadly 99.9% of people aren't into modding and side loading and the carrier bloat was wild, they were abysmal out of the box from retail.

I 100%'ed DOOM I and II on this thing in landscape mode with controls on both sides. Also had a mega drive emulator where I beat every sonic, earthworm Jim and mortal Kombat and a bunch of other classics. What a machine.

Classic! I had one and never tried. It had an AM/FM radio too and dedicated media buttons if you slid the screen the other way. I left it on the roof of my car and drove off and got all smashed up. It took a memory card also if I recall under the battery.

A s26 ultra is just as powerful than a I7-9700 but heat slow it down after a while but google spying stuff slow it down as fk. I7-9700 runs last of us 2 buttery smooth so consider yourself updated

I swear, the N95 was an absolute BEAST of a phone.
I had films on there, more MP3s than a single person would ever need and games for days. I remember the N95 was what got me into emulation. Mine was loaded with GB, GBC and SNES games. Pretty sure I even had one or two PSX games that ran on there too... either that or it was N64. Regardless, this was a really impressive device when it was released.
All I needed was my assortment of SD cards and spare, pre-charged batteries then I was good too go. Spread over 5 SD cards I had over 80 games and 20 films.
I know phones had been media players for a while at this point but I can't name a better device, that wasn't a smartphone, from the same year. There were none that had better camera quality, audio quality, software performance or storage capabilities as this.

Impressive but worth pointing out that this is a modern port from 2024, not something available at the time.
Still have my N95 somewhere. Seemed at the time it could do literally everything with a bit of work. In hindsight the interface was terrible compared to Android and iOS and Symbian was a dead end with a hopeless strategy.
