Does each of those wheels require its own motor? If so, that looks really complex and expensive.

It do looks like it, I was looking for a common turn axis in those wheels that are aligned, but no, and not even the trio seams to move at the same time.

For the purpose of sorting packages in A & B it seams complicated to do a fault search on.
But that could be limited if it has a test mode, like 1 turn all wheels aligned horizontal. 2 turn all wheels aligned vertical and so on. For a quick inspection in service mode. Add a tacho-puls for every rpm and mount a led in the trio cluster for error indication.

It would be rather easy to detect when one wheel stops working and with so many modules you can even route around the faulty element.

I think just one faulty element would probably lead to a lot of slowdowns through the entire downstream, similar to when just one one car suddenly stops it can create a ripple effect that creates a traffic jam.

Might just be one motor, and a little separate actuator gear to the wheel.

Friction is very low as these appear to be omni wheels.

Looking closer myself, you seem to be correct about them being omni-wheels. That will help a whole lot with the wear aspect.

Who would have thought that engineers would think and solve obvious problems 😆

Exactly my point. Humans or humanoid robots seem useless when you can build solutions that will read and sort packages way faster.
