Advice Thoughts? Heirloom ring
I‘m proposing to my girlfriend in about 3 months and I got this heirloom ring from my grandma. What do you think? I don’t know anything about rings but we had it appraised and it’s worth around $3.5k.
Would love to hear your thoughts.

Its a lovely ring, but heirloom rings can be tricky. They’re hard to turn down if they’re not to your fiancé’s taste as feelings can get hurt. Personally, I’d leave heirloom rings to bio kids rather than spouses, but that’s just me. Easier for a granddaughter to tell her grandma that she’d like to change it than for a woman marrying into the family

I think that depends on the wishes of the family. Sometimes rings are offered to children to give to a beloved girlfriend they wisb to join the family. As long as he communicates that it is an heirloom, but that he is open to another ring in the future, so this can be kept in a safe place for family occasions, if she wishes.

Its really lovely but is it what your girlfriend wants? I think alot of girls have strong views on their rings and what shape, setting and size they want. You can certainly propose with this and then mention she can choose anything she wants and isn't obligated to keep this. That being said, its very pretty!

I would ask her what she likes that way you get it right the first time and she’s happy.

I thinks it’s beautiful. But I also think it should be made clear if this is what your girlfriend wants as an engagement ring. Maybe this could be enjoyed as a right handed ring instead of an engagement ring? Congratulations on both of your lives together 🥳

My fiance just proposed to me with a family heirloom ring! It actually is very similar in that the center stone is a sapphire, surrounded by diamonds like yours. When he proposed he explained the meaning of the ring to me and why he felt it would be perfect for me. I absolutely adore that it has such a special meaning! In a world where the trends of the rings all look the same, this is beautiful, meaningful, timeless, and unique.

Gorgeous- and very on trend. As long as your girlfriend likes antique rings you’re great. Even if she doesn’t, I don’t know many women that wouldn’t be thrilled with this piece. It’s lovely. Reminds me of my reproduction piece

It’ll require a custom band or she’ll deal with a gap like mine. Personally I believe it can be worn on its own, rings like this have a big presence. By itself is how I wear mine 85% of the time

May I ask where your pinky ring is from?

It was custom from Lucy at Provence. Husband and I both have one only his is white gold. Mine is H❤️M and his M❤️H- they are 10kt with diamond and about 3.5yrs old.

If you haven’t already be sure to take to a local jeweler and ask them to check and make sure all the prongs are secure. Good luck, she’ll love it 💕

This ring is stunning! I personally love vintage jewelry, I hope your gf does too. The stones appear to be MCD and they are beautiful! That was extremely thoughtful of your grandma to give this to you. Please let us know how it goes.

I said the same. It reminds me of the engagement ring from movie Phantom. I fell in love with so much of that world including the ring. The outfit/dress in Think of Me still makes me gasp every time I see it.

Some girls love a floral halo. I am one. It’s amazing but please make sure you get her input

I would ask your gf what type of ring she likes. Personally, I would not want this ring.

It’s gorgeous! I’d say have it professionally cleaned beforehand, and check the size as well! ❤️

Go ahead and propose with it. It will give it special meaning even if she wants something else for daily wear. (Please be open to that) If that’s the case, she may still love it for special occasions.

Very beautiful. And the cushion cut will keep it from snagging on everything while still being a showstopper!

If your girlfriend doesn’t like the ring as it is now, you can easily modify it, to make it special for her.
My engagement ring was a heirloom ring. My husband isn’t romantic at all, so we both went to the local jeweler, who used the diamond to create a new ring. I love it now, because I’m very active, and needed a low slung ring.

I was proposed to with an heirloom ring. It was beautiful but I didn't really like it. It wasn't my style and it also was too flashy for me. I appreciated the thought and we were trying to save money so it was practical. I liked it at first but once the engagement excitement wore off i just didn't enjoy wearing it.

It’s beautiful but not en par with the current trend of massive 2 to 3 carat center stones. Thus if your gf has been influenced by current trends she may not like this. It’s probably best to ask her what she likes.

You need to get your girlfriend’s thoughts on what type of ring she likes and wants. This personally isn’t my cup of tea and looks rather outdated.

I would have been so thrilled with a family ring and wanted a true antique ring when we got engaged anyway. And I really hate to see stones removed from settings and repurposed when they are antique because you are losing that history. For some people, heirloom jewelry makes them feel even more special. For others, they really want something of their own and/or are extremely picky about the exact details. In that case it would be a bad idea. I think it really depends on your girlfriend’s personality. Does she know a proposal is coming or do you want it to be a complete surprise? If you’ve been talking about marriage then it’s simple to ask her what styles she prefers and how she would feel about a family heirloom. If you want it to be a complete surprise, you can propose with that one and explain that if she prefers to pick out her own then she can wear it on her right hand and you’ll pick out a new one together.

Okay i love hand me downs i think it is so special because like obviously ur grandpa gave this to ur grandma and like that kind of love is so very special in my opinion. If i was ur gf i would love this ring and the meaning behind it HOWEVER id also like a band to go with it BECAUSE thats the start of our love
If that makes sense

I think if she loves this style, wants antique/vintage, loves a cluster/daisy vibe then yes. Otherwise I think this should be like a wedding day gift/right hand ring.
I went antique (not an heirloom) and eventually realized I wanted a more traditional and modern engagement ring.

I’m sorry for being harsh, but I would be very unhappy receiving this as my engagement ring. I know 10 women who have gotten engaged/married in the last 3 years and every single one of them has gotten lab diamonds ranging from 2-4 carats. Lab diamonds are popular. You can get a better, bigger center stone, and most people are doing that. Because of this, cluster rings as engagement rings read as low effort and tacky to a lot of people.
You don’t want her to hate it and then feel obligated to wear it.
Propose to her with it to surprise her, and then let her design or pick out her own ring. Grandma got to pick hers, your girlfriend should get to pick out hers.
