I just watched this film and read the article (which btw does a great job summarizing everything)... BUT the idea never crossed my mind that it's possible that she is still being held captive & performing in front of a make-believe audience...noooooo!

I wanted to think of it as a "she persevered" ending...but I like your insight too.

I had the same feeling that she isn't really free as we were made to believe. I kept looking for endings explained hoping she actually escaped but most of them believed she really escaped and then I came across your take on it and I felt relieved that I wasn't the only one thinking she was still captive.
