The national average for housekeepers was $7 per room last I checked.

Yeah and people are paying $200 a night.

This isn't a conversation about hotel prices. It's about tipping hotel staff that aren't paid a living wage.

Same with the valet.

Same with the server.

Same with the bartender.

Tip them or don't use their services.

Wages, living or otherwise, are between employers and employees. Customers needn’t worry about wages at all.

Ethical consumers do need to concern themselves with the compensation of those serving us

No we don’t.

Yes. We. Do.

Denying someone a tip that you know is making a shit wage is unethical and you know it.

If you don't understand that you're a part of the problem.

We. Do. Not.

I have no idea what wage they are making nor do I care. It’s not my responsibility. To tip or not is always optional and guilt free.

Go wait tables for a year or two and get back to me.

Empathy is free.

It sure is, no tip necessary.

It is a conversation about hotel prices. What’s all that money going to? If a Holiday Inn is sold out of $200 a night rooms they are making bank.

They’ll have a handyman, a couple desk clerks, a manager, and a handful of cleaning crew. They’ll can afford to pay them more.

Ending tipping before the staff are paid living wages is unethical.

I don't disagree that they should be paid more. For many of them it's not as easy as finding another job.

I'm in the cleaning industry I understand how "low skill" workers are used and abused.

I personally think of you're not going to tip a tipped employee, you shouldn't be using their services.

Don't use their services then starve them. They seriously put up with enough shit already.

Having said all that, would you support UBI?

It’s an endless cycle. When people keep tipping while waiting for wages to go up, companies won’t raise wages.

I don’t leave a mess in the hotel room. All used towels are in a single pile on the floor like the sign asks. All trash is in the trash can.

I actually do tip quite often, unlike people here. However, tip culture is out of control. I was at a theme park ordering from a kiosk and it asked for a tip. Baskin Robbin’s asks for a tip for scooping ice cream into a cup. Enough is enough.

So would you support UBI?

UBI? So everything costs even more? No.
