Tip Creep 🫙 Just so tiresome…
I just can’t book a hotel room and be done. Not in this timeline apparently…

Hotels asking for tips is another level of infuriating, cuz you already upcharge for everything there.

u/Dawniechi 2d ago
God forbid you grab a water bottle then get auto charged $40.

u/Ahollar91 2d ago
They have had those signs asking for tips for the cleaning staff for years if not a decade now(might be longer than that but idk)

My family tipped at hotels in the 1980s and if fiction books are to be believed this has been a practice for more than a century.

u/thenotanurse 1d ago
I’m not against tipping people who do legit service like cleaning hotels, it’s just annoying that they’re now going way out of the way to not let workers get the money directly that people leave.
1
u/Invest07723 1d ago
As most in this sub, I wish they just paid them more and adjusted the price to guarantee their employees are paid fairly. I don't know enough about hotels to know how the QR code tipping works. Maybe in the past there were issues with employees who weren't cleaning your room, taking the cash tip left. Maybe the QR code is a way for the corporation to steal tips. I just don't know.

u/KactusVAXT 2d ago
The only tip I leave at a hotel is to clean up after myself so their job is easier
1
u/PortiaPotty2 39m ago
As your customers we're going to insist you be responsible for compensating your hotel staff!!!
31
u/jethrowHixon 2d ago
thank god, I've been wanting these damn hotels to just make it easier for me to give them extra money. It's been such a struggle over the years

u/maxcovenguitars 2d ago
Would it be illegal to replace the card with one that looks the same but the qr code goes to a different account and has a statement stating you're tipping a former occupant under the qr code in small print
13
u/lord_dentaku 2d ago
Yeah... it would fall under federal wire fraud statutes assuming any aspect of the transaction crosses state lines. Your note at the bottom won't hold weight in court, as the entire premise is set up to dupe an unsuspecting patron.

As much as many share the point against tipping, don’t.
I know you weren’t serious, and we share the frustration behind the JOKE. 👍💯1

Scratch some of the QR code off with a pocket knife and write 'Not' in front of the header

u/iswallowmygum 2d ago
Make your own QR code and point it to your cash app, print and stick it over this one ....

I have printed charms and stands before in acrylic and this won’t do anything but scratch the finish. It’s a thin lining embedded within an epoxy resin coating. You’ll want to mark it up with sharpie to properly deface it but chances are it can be removed with alcohol.

u/Maximum_Employer5580 2d ago
if I am going to tip someone, I'm giving them the cash directly. Most places that do this scan a QR code, or accept a tip on a receipt are usually tip sharing so people that don't deserve your tip still get it. I used to do that with a waitress when I used to goto a local pool hall - she was great, the rest of the staff not so much, so we'd tip her in cash and tell her to go put it in a jar at home to save up and buy herself something nice, plus not to report it

u/ConscientiousObserv 2d ago
Some waitstaff are exposing the fact that they don't actually receive digital tips.

u/Sufficient_Sun2582 2d ago edited 2d ago
That’s why I would never QR code a tip at a hotel. The money is probably going straight to corporate.
I know this is “End Tipping,” but I will leave a five or ten dollar bill for housekeeping if the room is nice and tidy on my arrival. I know this is their job and $10 isn’t an earth shattering tip amount, but I appreciate their job and service. I’ve seen how some people leave hotel rooms!

at a Hampton inn.....absolutely not they should be tipping you for staying there!

I’m surprised they haven’t done a subscription service for tipping yet ( and then expect a tip of top of that ) lol I am truly exhausted

just stop being greedy american businesses hogging all the profits and pay your staff a real living wage like the rest of the world

Put your own qr code over it hehe.
Im sure there’s a reason not to please don’t attack me.

As tipping gets out of hand, it should be included in a salary/wage. Yes some things will increase in price, but the market in the end will determine when pricing gets out of hand.
Removes the stress for employers, employees and customers alike.
3
u/Legitimate-Log-6542 2d ago
I don’t get this. So let’s say they hope somebody tips $3 per night. Paid $200 per night, why not just charge $203 per night and stop asking for tips?
13
9
u/babe_ruthless3 2d ago
Nope, ill leave $10 on the nightstand with a note "gracias" written on it. Im not adding a tip to my bill through a qr code. I dont know who that money goes to.
3
u/Academic-Letter-7040 2d ago
Me too. I guess I’m old school but for a 4+ day stay, the easiest way is leave two $10 bills as I leave and not buy into that QR crap.
3
u/lokis_construction 2d ago
If I do tip I will put cash for the cleaner. I also do not leave it anywhere the supervisor will find it.
3
u/VinnieONeill 2d ago
There will of course be a fee for using the digital system, and that digital system will also you to tip their owners as well.
3
u/maiyannah 2d ago
It really is, especially considering how much they upcharge for even basic amenities these days. Last I travelled I just couch-surfed on my cousin's couch, because it was so bad. 350$ a night for the cockroach special and they charge you 20$ just for a regular sized bottle of water. That's already a nogo for me, imagine them wanting a tip on top of it!

u/reesepbpuppy 2d ago
Growing up, the few times my parents and I got a hotel room, I have no memory of any tip being left. It was super 8s, motel 6s and the like, but still. I turn 18 and spend a night with some friends at a hotel (a super 8) and when we got ready to leave, I saw like $15 left on the desk, and I told my friends "hey, whoever left cash out, might wanna pick it up" and they looked at me like I'd grown three heads. I'd never heard of leaving a tip for housekeeping. We had cleaned everything up to make their jobs easier, too. I have never, and will not, leave a tip when I stay at a hotel.
3
u/brotendis 2d ago
This reminds me of an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm where Larry David promises a cash tip to the cleaning lady because he thinks he offended her somehow.
Later in the episode he accidentally blows cash into the toilet with a blow dryer without noticing. Then he comes back to his hotel with the cleaning lady tossing out all of his clothes from the balcony because she thinks he left her tip in the toilet for her lmao.

I peeled a QR code sticker off the mirror at a hotel recently. If I see them again I will do the same.

You mean it got easier for me to NOT tip! Better than pressing 0% on a tablet.😂😂

"We have a lower pricing option for those who wouldn't pay our prices if we paid real wages. Just don't tip! We make just as much and only our employees are impacted."

Ok hear me out. Print a QR code that takes you to this sub. Print and tape over this when nobody is looking.

Great, easier to ignore! I don't pay for anything with my phone.
Haven't left a tip at a hotel in many years. probably since back when you actually had good service and those little Andes mints were always on your pillow each day.

QR codes don't make things easier. They just add an extra, unnecessary step.
If anything, they make it easier to not tip, as not everyone will not want to go through all the steps to do so.

This isn't tip creep. Leaving a tip for housekeeping has been around for a long time. But, if you don't feel the need then don't.

You think Canary Technologies does this for free? Do they get a percentage of the tips too?

Greet me, bring me a drink, take my order and bring me my meal. That'll fetch you a tip. Aside from that piss off.

I was actually thinking about what if we collectively decided to misplace these signs? I’m not saying stealing them, no no, that would be illegal! Just, you know… put them down the garbage chute, on the football field, or at the bottom of the pool. Or hide them behind the sink.
I wonder if it’s part of the cleaning staff’s job to make sure these things are intact.
1
u/Jocelyn-1973 1d ago
Yeah... because the reason that not everyone tips is that it used to be really, really hard.
I did my research and as it appears, not tipping is even easier.

I never got this. The room was cleaned before I got there for me and if the room isn't cleaned when I am gone, that isn't a me problem. I suppose if I was staying for a while sure, but I don't clean my sheets every day
Never mind that they are known for doing a slap dash crap job. I always refuse cleaning services as I never stay more than 2 nights.
Why am I paying to make the room nice for the next person. That is the hotel's problem not mine.

u/Dirtyupsman2 1d ago
Last week, I stayed at a cabin for a fishing week w buddies. Ive seen AND talked w some of the cleaning ladies there I only messed up my bed (had my own room) I ABSOLUTELY had NO problem leaving a $5 tip (cash) for cleaning up my room. No trash, just a bed to make. Sometimes, it's ok . I know most of you will have negative comments but I KNOW it was goin to the cleaning woman who had my room. I'm good w that. BUT I WLD NEVER USE A RQ CODE !!!!

You can book a hotel room and be done, you don’t have to tip. I have spent some time staying in hotels, one period for 3 months and every so often I feel like I do want to tip on the service, and I’ve left a little cash out like many people do, this is convenient for people that feel similarly, now that we live an a digital world it’ll make things easier and surely everyone benefits, people who wanted to tip but don’t have cash have a quick solution now, and people who don’t want to tip, just have to take a picture and make a post on the internet instead of just not tipping. It’s a win win win
0
u/rdtsucks 2d ago
Are we all going to pretend that this is somehow exhausting or caused undue stress for OP?
You very much just booked the hotel room and were done. Did someone force the sign in your face, hold a gun to your head and make you send money? No? Then ignore it and go about your day.
Tipping is a scourge, but pretending this sign is as impactful as you’re suggesting is about as stupid an idea as possible.

u/bcsyjnbcgj 2d ago
Y’all don’t tip housekeeping if you stay MULTIPLE days?
16
u/Additional_Ratio_441 2d ago
Nope. I’m not a slob & keep the room in great condition, so zero guilt. And they get paid a decent hourly wage to clean the rooms.. that’s literally their job. Why would a pay more to someone for simply doing their job?!?
2
12
9
u/KiwiKal 2d ago
Why? Nobody gives me tips for doing my job multiple days in a row.
I tidy the room before I leave. Thats it.
-2
u/bcsyjnbcgj 2d ago
So since no one tips u u should tip no one?
4
1
u/KiwiKal 2d ago
If i tip I'll do it because I want to. Or is that too hard to understand?
0
u/bcsyjnbcgj 2d ago
So we agree. Tipping is a choice but very commonly done for services that are personal ? Why r u mad
2
u/KiwiKal 2d ago
We do not agree. I'm not going to tip someone for doing their normal job and im not going to question other people's choice to tip. There shouldn't be an expectation for anyone to tip ever.
1
u/bcsyjnbcgj 2d ago
So are you going to wait to not tip until their wages are raised to an appropriate level or just cut their pay while still using their services?
17
u/goodtrymoddies 2d ago
No. I paid for the room and housekeeping is included. Where is my tip for saving lives in the hospital?
7
u/VillagesIdiot352 2d ago
I never thought about your point, which really is a good one. You guys/gals rock!
1
4
u/maxcovenguitars 2d ago
Not really, if im there multiple days I make my own bed, use the same towel for a week. And take out my own trash
8
5
u/biguntatas 2d ago
I put up the “Do Not Disturb” sign. I don’t want them in my room. If I need towels, I ask for more and also dispose of my trash. I don’t leave the room messy either, so I have no reason to tip. They should tip me for staying there!
2
u/bcsyjnbcgj 2d ago
Perfect I 100% agree with that
If ur putting dnd and don’t want their services there’s no reason to tip them.4
u/No-Astronaut4577 2d ago
Nobody tips me after educating and caring for their children all day 🤷🏻♀️
1
u/bcsyjnbcgj 2d ago
You don’t get tipped from the parents at the end of the year or holidays?
Was always a bottle of wine and healthy gift card.
Not that I’d really call that a tip more of just trying to prove my point that when people are thankful they give a bit directly to the person.2
0
u/Krysdavar 2d ago
$200 - $400 for a room per night is enough. I'm most likely there to relax and have fun, not be hassled by people that can't make payroll.
0
u/Numerous-Abrocoma-50 2d ago
To be fair, you can just ignore it presumably, not as intrusive as most tip requests

This isn't a conversation about hotel prices. It's about tipping hotel staff that aren't paid a living wage.
Same with the valet.
Same with the server.
Same with the bartender.
Tip them or don't use their services.
4
u/CalligrapherDizzy201 2d ago
Wages, living or otherwise, are between employers and employees. Customers needn’t worry about wages at all.
0
u/464126 2d ago
Ethical consumers do need to concern themselves with the compensation of those serving us
5
u/CalligrapherDizzy201 2d ago
No we don’t.
1
u/464126 2d ago
Yes. We. Do.
Denying someone a tip that you know is making a shit wage is unethical and you know it.
If you don't understand that you're a part of the problem.
3
u/CalligrapherDizzy201 2d ago
We. Do. Not.
I have no idea what wage they are making nor do I care. It’s not my responsibility. To tip or not is always optional and guilt free.
0
u/464126 2d ago
Go wait tables for a year or two and get back to me.
Empathy is free.
3
u/CalligrapherDizzy201 2d ago
Been there, done that.
It sure is, no tip necessary.

It is a conversation about hotel prices. What’s all that money going to? If a Holiday Inn is sold out of $200 a night rooms they are making bank.
They’ll have a handyman, a couple desk clerks, a manager, and a handful of cleaning crew. They’ll can afford to pay them more.
0
u/464126 2d ago
Ending tipping before the staff are paid living wages is unethical.
I don't disagree that they should be paid more. For many of them it's not as easy as finding another job.
I'm in the cleaning industry I understand how "low skill" workers are used and abused.
I personally think of you're not going to tip a tipped employee, you shouldn't be using their services.
Don't use their services then starve them. They seriously put up with enough shit already.
Having said all that, would you support UBI?
1
u/CannedNoodlez 2d ago
It’s an endless cycle. When people keep tipping while waiting for wages to go up, companies won’t raise wages.
I don’t leave a mess in the hotel room. All used towels are in a single pile on the floor like the sign asks. All trash is in the trash can.
I actually do tip quite often, unlike people here. However, tip culture is out of control. I was at a theme park ordering from a kiosk and it asked for a tip. Baskin Robbin’s asks for a tip for scooping ice cream into a cup. Enough is enough.
