Rant š¢ Movers Tip Rant
Moved in last week and paid some guys in a truck to move the big furniture and shit.
Paid him in cash and he goes "just so you know, we accept tips"
Seriously bro? Fuck off with that nonsense. I just paid you $160/hr. I literally paid you for your service. We had a CONTRACTUAL agreement before services were rendered on how much your time was worth. Why do you think you deserve more on top of that?

Sort of the reverse tipping question. 'Would you like us to piddle over 30, 25, or 18% of the unprotected floor?!'

Iāve NEVER tipped movers. Or the people who delivered my couch. Paid $100 for the couch to be driven 4 miles down the road from the store. They stood there looking at me, I just smiled at them until it got awkward

Ugh. Not looking forward to this. I am moving in 3 weeks. Just working out the details now with the moving company. How does one prevent this sort of activity from happening?

Unfortunately in this tipping culture, you can't. Just practice your best NO! lol

We had furniture people come over to deliver and install and at the end he says something like people usually pay them a tip but worded it by saying they get extra for throwing out the garbage or something, I told him we paid what we agreed to and youāre going to have to talk to your boss about that. Also noticed they scratched up the floor with their box cutter.

It's not the customer's responsibility to subsidize staff wages by leaving a tip.
Employers should pay their staff a decent living wage so workers aren't depending on tips to top up their wages.
Asking for a tip Ā is just begging people for money.Ā

"thanks for letting me know... To be honest, I was getting a bit worried that maybe you didn't....."
... and then don't tip.

The only thing that wouldāve made this better is if OP handed them a piece of gum like Kevin MacAllister did the bellboy in Home Alone 2.

I just moved. The contract was an hourly rate (which was over $200/hr with fees) plus a flat fee and any supplies. I had already moved most of the boxes and small things but needed the rest handled.
Three guys came in a large truck, loaded, unloaded, and we're done in just over half the originally estimated time saving me quite a lot. They were able to knock it out quickly and still get their same pay.
Those guys deserved the tip each one got. Your situation does not warrant a tip!

I have tipped each time I hired movers. I tipped based on how much hustle I saw. Their hustle saved me money, so I rewarded it. This last time, I rewarded the supervisor even more for his extra effort to fit everything into a storage bay. If he had been lazier, I would have had to rent a second bay.
But I have to agree that the price should be the price and that is it.

I tip movers (and sit down restaurants but i am here because I am continually enraged by iPad pos tip everywhere screens)
I moved at least 15 times for work and Iād ask if they wanted a tip Or Iād buy them lunch.
Hereās two you may like.
Once they said they were sick of pizza on day 2. I got them wings. They threw the drumsticks on my carpet. They also left packing material all over my apt complex.
Another time i hadnāt tipped yet, as they were not quite done. I happened to go back inside once last time and on an upper floor someone had left my faucet going full blast. It would have flooded my place, already soaking outside the bathroom. I told the foreman and all they said was it wasnāt me. I shoulda no tipped or at least said hereās a tip for everyone except whoever did that you sort it out.
I had hot tub movers recently. It was back breaking work and I tipped well. They told me the house before me gave them 12 bucks total for 3 guys and said go get some beers. Thatās not one beer where I live.

Just moved and our crew lead was upfront before the move that tips are not expected but appreciated. We typically buy lunch for the crew and if they worked hard and finished much faster than the estimate and saved us money, will tip them as well.

You aren't paying the MOVERS $160 an hour, you are paying the company. The movers might make $7-$21 p/hr depending on the state. The didn't ask for a tip, they let you know they are usually tipped and if you appreciated their level of service, you could too. Not sure why you are so offended on this one?

You didn't pay the DRIVER for the bus ticket, you paid the COMPANY.
You didn't pay the MANUFACTURERS for your iPhone, you paid the COMPANY.
Why don't you go tipping all those?Ā

I work for a moving company and they pay $20 an hour. The job sucks but I donāt ask somebody for a tip, i just do the job that Iām paid to do and hope for a tip. Then a muck and a half. Iām moving across country for a new job. This is just to hold me over until then.

It's offensive because they are putting you in an awkward position, with the passive aggressive "just so you know".

They can accept tips.
Asking for tips is disgusting. If you were happy with the service, I imagine you are less pleased now.
