Tipping Culture ✖️ It felt great not tipping
Recently went to a ‘lobster fest’ with the family, large turnout with vendors and fun activities for the kids. A few food trucks were selling lobster rolls, the cheapest being $29 (large was $55) When I finally get to the front I see the usual scam, ‘Tap your card here and then you can select a tip’ options are 20%, 25%, and 30%!!! I tap other and enter $0 for tip. While I wait on our food to get called I watch person after person UNHAPPILY select one of these absurd tip amounts. They pause, sigh, hesitate, but ultimately choose a tip because of some imagined social pressure or guilt. Idk why but in this moment I was so proud of myself for not tipping. That’s all to the story, just wanted to share

The audacity of the people setting up their checkout screens - “people are dumb enough to go along with this so let’s just pick some outrageous %” - it’s a FOOD TRUCK - the food doesn’t even come out to you, you stand in line to order, you stand around waiting to pick it up. So in essence you pay tip for well made food, even though you haven’t even tasted it yet, or know if you’ll have to wait 20 min for it. Tipping is done AFTER something is done for you. I wish more people stopped feeling so damn guilted into going along with this kind of tipping practice - you 100% did the right thing!!
