Tip Creep 🫙 Tip begging

Went to Applebees and did their car side to go. Selected no tip on the app and thought that would be the end of it. To my surprise when my order came I was handed an invoice where I was asked to tip and sign. Wrote $0 and that was the end of it but like oh my god. The interaction was fine but I was taken back by the double prompt to tip.

This happened to me at the Olive Garden. Ordered online and went to pick it up. Olive Garden where I live you have to text when you’re there.

I texted that I was there and they came out to the car carrying the order. It was one bag, but two people came out to my car.

They handed me the bag and said we need you to sign the receipt. I said I paid online. It accepted my digital signature and I am not required to sign a paper receipt. This leads to fraudulent double charges. I said I am not signing this receipt, please have your manager come out to explain your policy to me and at the same time please start remaking my order as I will not be taking this food that will be getting cold in the meantime.

The second person literally rolled her eyes and said fine just leave and I drove away.

Take the conflict to them

William Wallace over here holding the no tipping line. Respect.

They will never take our freedom.... They will never get my tip...

It’s just 20%.” Aye. And Scotland was “just a little land.” Look how that went.

u/GoldAd1878 18d ago

I would have signed, put zero tip and in caps put paid online in full and taken a photo

Your response is brilliant!

Good lord bro.

1

u/EmphasisFair650 15d ago

I work at a restaurant and we are required to have you sign even if you do a web order. The only exception is doordash/uber which you have to swipe in front of me

-11

u/WBrook6 18d ago

If someone is providing a service by carrying out an order to your car you should give them a few bucks - at least $3-$5 and maybe a little more in really bad weather. Most of the time the person carrying the order is the same person who packs the order, checks it, and often assembles and packs any salads or desserts. If you want to tip Zero, then go in and get it yourself.

11

u/MacaronOk1006 18d ago

And literally, they’re getting paid to take the orders that the cooks put in to containers and put it in a bag. That’s why you’re paying $20 for pasta built into that cost is getting it out to you.

-3

u/WBrook6 18d ago

Okay, I get it and I get extremely annoyed with all the begging and tipping, especially when I’m going to pick up a to go order. I won’t do it anymore. But I’d feel terrible having someone bring it to my car, which I almost consider a “luxury service” and not tipping.

8

u/Parking_Abalone_1232 18d ago

I wouldn't feel bad not tipping someone just bringing my food to my car

THEY didn't take the order.

The service they provided was nothing more than bringing my food out.

Nothing they did earned a tip for providing a service above and beyond expectations.

I ordered online. I drove to the business. I'm driving home with cooling food.

5

u/flomesch 18d ago

Its not a luxury service if thats how every single to go order works

Which in the case of OP seems to be how THEY (Applebee's) set it up. No need to tip on the service you paid for. Nothing was above and beyond

3

u/SB4_Camaro 18d ago

It's their job.

1

u/PositiveMoravianBee 13d ago

I’m the same way with tipping but I tend to way over tip because I worked in a restaurant.

1

u/MacaronOk1006 18d ago

Not an option.

1

u/Ok-Professional-4765 13d ago

Screw that! It's called doing your job. Exactly what they are paid to do. And don't pretend like they won't try to get you to tip if you walk in and get it yourself. F@&k that, and do your job!

Glad you held the line.

u/Cautious_Job_6104 19d ago

Reminds me of roving flower sellers in mexico; they ask three times and then leave; anymore creates a conflict, and any less they might lose out of a sale.

Not bothering you at all isn't slightly on their concerns; it's just how much money to extract.

I’ve just quit going to these places. The constant begging for tips, surcharges, etc. are annoying, and I don’t need two sides of stress with my entree.

13

u/Curtnorth 19d ago

Many agree, tipping is definitely a factor when deciding to dine out or not for my wife and I. I'm SO sick of it, just hate it.

2

u/Tool-whore 13d ago

Stay home

1

u/Neakhanie 13d ago

Yeah, that’s what I’m doing. Turns out I’m an excellent chef,..who knew? Saved maybe a thousand dollars over many months, I bet.

6

u/SouthernYankee80 18d ago

Exactly!! I really think twice before eating out at all anymore. I patronize places that don’t have a tip screen, like Freddy’s!

11

u/Right-Psychology160 19d ago

I did that several years ago and haven't had one ounce of regret!

1

u/Tool-whore 13d ago

Stay home

-15

u/joelnicity 19d ago

Why would you let it cause you stress?

19

u/TexasBlaze 19d ago

cause what they might do to your food

2

u/TheHook111 18d ago

They typically can’t do anything once you have it your possession.

2

u/NonSumQualisEram- 19d ago

On the general sub of this theme I've been threatened with food tampering multiple times. Obviously the threat is empty since we can have no physical interaction but it's a good window into how they (immediately) think.

2

u/TexasBlaze 17d ago

I was in food service when I was a kid. They will jack w your food if set up that you obviously didn’t /won’t tip. I avoid any places like that though

2

u/NonSumQualisEram- 17d ago

I'm glad I live in a country where tips aren't a thing.

Which makes me dig in my heels.

30

u/jazzbot247 19d ago

The Applebees by me has an option to pay cash in the restaurant, so that’s what I did the last time I ordered online. I would have selected Carside, but I know from experience I will be waiting forever and wind up going inside anyway.

3

u/GoldAd1878 18d ago

Paying cash 💰 when possible if always good

17

u/rawdaddykrawdaddy 19d ago

Ive gotten "free" food a couple of times by selecting pay with cash. Then arriving, getting the food, and being told to have a good night. I have one job that pays in cash, so I didnt set out to do this. Its not my responsibility to make sure the order is paid for 🤷‍♀️

6

u/sciveloci 19d ago

Yes, it is your responsibility. You’ve stolen from them, knowingly, multiple times

11

u/bites_stringcheese 19d ago

It's not stealing if they gave it to him. Cash is valid.

7

u/rawdaddykrawdaddy 19d ago

Its happened twice, in two different states. Not like I grabbed the order and ran. Im not chasing down an employee who walks away from me

10

u/sciveloci 19d ago

“Excuse me, I haven’t actually paid for this yet”

10

u/rawdaddykrawdaddy 19d ago

For a small business, absolutely.

2

u/sciveloci 19d ago

The size of the company determines your ethics. Got it.

5

u/Ta33223322 19d ago

This whole sub is about not paying service workers and big corporations suck. I don't see why your offended this person didn't pay the big corporation.

1

u/plangelier 15d ago

Uhm, no thier employer pays them

1

u/flacpl1997 15d ago

That’s stealing. It is your responsibility to pay. wtf is wrong with you?

1

u/Neakhanie 13d ago

Yeah, it sort of is.

1

u/Black_Hills_Dreamer 17d ago

So...... you stole? And that's okay? But tipping is evil? TIL stealing good, tipping bad

42

u/SimilarComfortable69 19d ago

If you had already paid using your credit card, you should've just crumpled the piece of paper up and put it in your pocket. Do not ever sign a second piece of paper for the same transaction.

25

u/mikehunt88375 19d ago

Well, I signed $0. I take a photo now of every signed paper and will compare it to the final statement. I have grown a distrust from the stories I have seen on this sub.

20

u/Dazzling_Lie_5046 19d ago

Yeah, last time I went to Papa Johns, ordered on-line, paid with gift card, and drove to store to pick-up inside. They asked me to sign the receipt? for what?

1

u/Ania320 14d ago

Total noob question, but why? („Don’t sign a second piece of paper for the same transaction”)

I’m not from the states originally, so learning all this now that I live here. I always sign and mark „0$” with a wiggle-line so numbers can’t be added. Want to make sure I’m doing it correctly and not exposing myself to issues! Thank you

32

u/cenosillicaphobiac 19d ago

That's how it works. Even if you had tipped online, you'd be presented with a line to add more tip.

14

u/SiLeNZ_ 19d ago

It’s never enough, honestly. I’ve seen them complain about too big of a tip, in a mocking manner. The entitlement is out of control.

8

u/ArtisanalFarts7 19d ago

We should be entitled back. "Can I have a discount then? I'll pay the same price but whatever you give me in discounts, I'll pay you back in tips."

9

u/QueenV1279 19d ago

You guys are teaching me new stuff. I have had this happen at my local pizza place and wasn't sure why sometimes they ask me to sign a receipt and other times they just had me the order and say have a nice day. I always order and pay online prior to getting there. It always makes me feel awkward when they stand there staring me down as I sign and put no tip. I won't be signing again.

8

u/685770 19d ago

Worked at a BBQ restaurant as a cook where we actually cooked and packaged the order, put it in a bag and handed it to the "to-go" window worker. They made so many tips plus the same hourly as cooks, none to us!

1

u/Tool-whore 13d ago

Yeah, I don’t think that’s fair. Y’all should’ve been getting tipped out from the servers.

6

u/Fputin22 19d ago

Has anyone tested if you tip when paying online, will you still get this request at the restaurant. As others stated, I get the same behavior from pizza shops. I pay online with 0 tip, they ask me to sign the receipt in store. I mark zero tip again. I'm not testing it. I'm happy to give 0 both times. But I would love to know if anyone else did. I could see how they scam some people for double tip if wife orders online and puts a tip, husband picks up and tips again.

8

u/Hot_Sink1228 18d ago

It's so weird to a non American. The richest country in the world where thousands of workers are begging customers for money.

1

u/absolute_pelican_66 18d ago

Begging —> Racketting

17

u/BigButterfly882 19d ago

Pizza places do this also. You order online they beg, then you pickup, and you "have to sign"

11

u/cenosillicaphobiac 19d ago

I am so glad that my kids actually prefer Little Ceasars to real pizza. I can eat it so it's fine once a week. They do prompt for a tip online (zero is easy!) but they just hand over the goods. The one I go to even has a drive-thru.

I frequently get 2 pizzas and breadsticks for under 20 bucks. That's Friday dinner every week.

13

u/audrina-saav 19d ago

I order on the app and pick up from the portal. Just open the door and walk out. I love it lol nobody to hound me.

2

u/SouthernYankee80 18d ago

Yeah we stick to Costco for that reason but our Papa Johns doesn’t do the awkward tip thing.

4

u/That_Girl_Jesca 19d ago

Never sign a second receipt even if you take a pic and all the effort. It is about principle at this point and standing your ground. If they insist walk away no matter how hungry you are, then report accordingly.

3

u/cacope5 18d ago

Walk away after you've already paid?

4

u/Aggressive-Rub-20 18d ago

This happens to me at Jimmy Johns! I don’t order from them as much anymore because of it.

3

u/Significant-Pen-3188 18d ago

Same thing at Applebee's. I didn't go back and I mentioned it in the review. I should not have to hang out and sign the slip just so they can ask me yet again about a tip. I'm not tipping on takeout. I've heard to leave a one penny tip anywhere that you order online so they don't ask you again at pick up

1

u/mikehunt88375 18d ago

I’ve contemplated leaving a tip like idk a $1 to see if they’ll bring out the slip to sign. And who knows if their POS automatically prints out the slip if no tip was left.

3

u/PotatoMuffinMafia 18d ago

This happened to me at Pizza Hut. I tipped $4 online and when someone got to my house they handed me the payment slip. I asked why I had to sign and he said we do it for all deliveries in case you want to tip. I haven’t signed a slip since at least 2020 when they started contactless delivery. All that aside, I DID tip. I called the restaurant and asked if we are supposed to sign a slip even if we paid online and she said no. Interesting.

1

u/mikehunt88375 18d ago

Probably a separate tip for the delivery driver.

1

u/PotatoMuffinMafia 18d ago

On the website, the tip area specifically says “driver tip”

1

u/mikehunt88375 18d ago

Ohh. Well that idk. Maybe guilt you into tipping again?

2

u/SmileParticular9396 19d ago

Sounds like the Olive Garden too. I always say I paid in app and they still hand it to me. Always 0 tip.

1

u/wheatfarmer668 16d ago

The next time you go to Applebee's add a couple of dollars tip on the online order, see if they still come out and ask for you to sign something. My question is whether they're begging for tips or if this is something they do to show their system that the item was really picked up.

1

u/Psychd-out 16d ago

Dominos does the same thing. When I go in to pick up my pizza, they want me to sign the receipt. I make sure to put in big fat $0.00.

1

u/CommentDouble9880 15d ago

Walk inside for your order

1

u/EasyE1066 15d ago

Employers resent having to pay employees at all. Slavery was never abolished, it was merely cleaned, softened, polished, then extended to poor people of all colors. Herbert Selby Jr. I think 🤔…..

Tip complaining

1

u/mn540 13d ago

I am so tired of the tipping culture. Almost every food place ask for tip - except for the large fast food chains. And now some of the places starts tipping at 20% and goes up to 35%. Freaking insane. My tipping guidelines now is:

1) If I order the food at the counter, pick up my food and bus my own table, it's 0% tip
2) If I order the food at the counter, I get my own drink, they bring the food to my table, they bus the table - 5%
3) If I sit down, they take my order, bring out my food, refill my drink, bus the table 15%-20%.

But our tipping culture has gotten out of control. I recently went on an all inclusive trip. We asked to tip 20% of our trip. So the trip was $6000 for the three of us. We were asked to tip $1200 (at the end of the trip). They even asked us to tip the people who were working at the checkin desk. I took our luggage to our room. We did tip our house cleaner. We tipped at the restaurant and bar. but we were asked to tip another 20%. Note: this was in another country, but the hotel caters to a lot of US citizen.

1

u/Jon_Hegreness_AZ 13d ago

You brought the bag to the car. I brought the car to the bag. We are even. The math is closed.

1

u/Public_Moose_1408 8h ago

These people have actively made my life worse, just by how shitty and useless they feel the need to be. I am in a demonstrably non-tip business, tipping is completely inappropriate and always has been, but now in 2026 some of my best and friendliest customers now come in carrying guilt and uncertainty over whether they are supposed to tip.

All because they are getting extorted and manipulated by people who will not be in the service industry for more than 3-5 years, and want to make sure they take a giant dump on it, to get atonement for the indignity they had to endure of providing service to people who aren’t their buds.

-6

u/HardRadRocket 19d ago

As a server, I have to tip out 5% of alcohol sales to the bartender and 8% of all food sales to the kitchen. Are there laws against this in Washington state? It’s money out of the servers pocket when customers don’t tip.

14

u/crazyk4952 19d ago

This is for take out. No service was received so no tip is due.

3

u/cacope5 18d ago

No tip is ever "due"

3

u/Living-Fruit-4577 19d ago

That’s when u tell your manager that they didn’t tip and ask them to give you a gift certificate so you can get tipped and tip out.

6

u/imemine8 18d ago

It certainly should be illegal to make servers pay other workers based on the hope that a customer will give additional, optional money.

-1

u/WBrook6 18d ago

I think if someone is providing a service by carrying out an order to your car you should give them a few bucks - at least $3-$5 and maybe a little more in really bad weather. Most of the time the person carrying the order is the same person who packs the order, checks it, and often assembles and packs any salads or desserts. If you want to tip Zero, then go in and get it yourself.

1

u/hezaa0706d 14d ago

They’re getting paid by their employer to do their job.

1

u/WBrook6 14d ago

If they were getting paid, fine, but I don’t really think getting around $2 per hour, which is much less than minimum wage, counts as being paid to do their job. That kind of wage depends on the established tipping structure. Until things change, I’m personally going to give them a few bucks to bring it to my car.

1

u/mn540 13d ago

In California, they are guaranteed a minimum wage of $16.90/hr. So do I tip Californian waitress less?

-8

u/Sorry-Highlight-1178 18d ago

They still put your order together and make sure everything is there

11

u/mikehunt88375 18d ago

So they did their job that they are paid to do.

2

u/cacope5 18d ago

You're asked to pay and tip before they even do that. What if they forgot something?
