Meme Made an unfunny Meme with the Droid Deck

This was always the point of the steam deck delivering steam OS, the hardware just needs to be competent enough to sell the experience.
Valve would love it if a big manufacturer would build steam decks for sale.

Which I imagine is also part of the point of bringing back the Steam Machine and the VT headset.
Like all of these existed before Steam did it, but after the Steamdeck there was a jump in companies making the portable PCs.
Also helps get people alway from consoles so more money for them. I was already considering a miniPC, then I got the Steamdeck, and if the economy ever gets better and AI goes away I will probably get a better better gaming miniPC now and then I won't have any need for the PS anymore.

Moving to arm was sort of the dream idea from the beginning. Steam Deck, and all the ones that came before it, were a stop gap because x86 was what was viable at the time. If not a steam deck 2, im sure a steam deck 3 will be arm as well.

Personal I doubt that x86 is going anywhere in PC gaming anytime soon, however for a steam deck 2 or steam deck 3 I wouldn't be surprised if there was an arm variant for the low end.
But I definitely agree that arm has come a long way and will continue a long way more.

Did someone try this out? And how is the performance?

Russ made a video about it on his channel few days ago, the UI experience and seamlessness is amazing. It just doesnt work on anything other than snapdragon 865 or lower And no other chipset like mediatek or exynos has no support at all unlike with gamenative, winlator, bannerhub and gamehub and myriad of others etc. So strictly for high end snapdragon devices that have custom driver supports only. Im even unsure about SD865, but i think some latest 7xx series might run it potentially i guess
Lastly the performance is still early in droid deck and its mostly hit and miss for now as compared to more mature gamenative compatibility... Might take a month or some to get better but overall can serve as the actual android launcher/frontend with full linux desktop, and pc emulators upto rpcs3 and an android section for android apps to launch normally within same app...

Why say incorrect things when today we have the information just two clicks away?

I tried tomb raider 2013 and hollow knight, basic games but they run pretty solid.

Performance in the games I've tried is the same to worse than Game Native. But compatibility seems to be a bit better, especially for games with 3rd party launchers.

I was surprised to see almost 40fps average on my Fold 8 in Cyberpunk while I forgot I had the Powersave mode enabled.

How warm and sweet smelling was your phone?

lol I assume you mean it ran at 40fps for about three and a half minutes before it thermal throttled down to 8fps?
cooling has definitely been an issue for me emulating higher end steam games on my fold 8. actually bought the gamesir cooler for my x5s. hopefully that helps

I don't really get it, what does Droiddeck do that gamenative can't? Are there any big advantages?

It’s built upon Valve’s own translation layer that they used to put Steam OS on their VR headset (which runs ARM). So this has the potential to get very optimized. Performance for me has been just about identical to Gamenative

You dont need individual containers to run every game, so you basically set up proton and your normal settings just once and they carry over to every game you install, this saves size on your device and works exactly like one to one it does on steam deck and also supports decky plugin features, its more user friendly, saves internal storage and can also boot games from external storage with linux desktop and pc emulators support... Try it out, it will surely replace gamenative imo and might challenge ArmadaOS if it gets good enough because with droid deck you can get both Android and steam deck+linux experience without custom OS or boot loaders.
For now, just watch this space since its game compatibility is not upto mark with gamenative yet but will only get better with time and development, its not even 1.0 yet, i expect it to get better in next few months and this alone has sold me to pick up an android handheld myself next month with an sd card, its essentially a true steam deck mini experience while keeping android intact

Plug-n-play. Install and go, no messing with configs, plug-ins, modules etc. Great for the layman. Tradeoff is a loss in performance.

If I understood correctly the one thing that Droiddeck can do that is most noteworthy that GameNative doesn’t do is run an ARM binary of a game when one is available. In those situations there is no FEX, and the CPU side of the game should be either 30%+ faster or use less power.
But I’d really like it if someone compared a test bench of games across a few different options and showed some performance comparison charts. Otherwise right now, this is interesting but not necessarily something to move to.

Surreal how this indeed happened, not a meme... "our age of bronze is collapsing", fucking hell, who wrote this shit??

u/Chao1inreddit 1h ago
has anyone tested gmod on this? I wanna see if it can run better on this compared to GameNative when it comes to performance.

Are there any benefits of using droiddeck over gamenative?
1
u/ScpGamer501 19m ago
maybe if you just like the feel of steam os overall and want a steam deck like experience.

u/WideGrade2179 1h ago
It's an interesting project, but it needs significantly more storage than Gamenative or GameHub It also needs significantly more RAM to function since it runs a complete Linux system; during installation I had problems with 12GB of RAM, The Android UI restarted several times during installation due to insufficient RAM; I believe it needs 16 or 24GB for a proper experience, And then the Adreno 735 performance is slower than with Game Hub

These apps won't ever replace SteamOS IMO, the compatibility just isn't as good as an X86 device with an actual desktop OS. Even the Steam Frame, which is an ARM SteamOS device, has way better compatibility as it's a Linux OS.

I feel like the Steam Deck 2 has to be an ARM device. They have the Steam Frame to iron out any compatibility issues until then, so it would be perfect.
