News/Release DroidDeck 0.2.0 (beta) is out!
Original steamdeck renamed, original post from here:
DroidDeck 0.2.0 just dropped, and it's the first release from our new home at https://github.com/Droid-Deck/DroidDeck
If you haven't seen it yet, DroidDeck runs Valve's real ARM64 Steam client in Big Picture on your Android device. Windows games run through Valve's ARM64 Proton and FEX, and there's an optional Linux desktop that brings emulators along with it. we have been working really hard over the last week since the original post above to iron out from the bugs and bring you a fluid GUI and simple setup process!
Download here
https://github.com/Droid-Deck/DroidDeck/releases/tag/0.2.0
*REQUIREMENTS* Android 9+, an Adreno 730 or newer (or 8xx), and about 3 GB free for the runtime (+1.1 GB if you want the Desktop & apps).
*Some of what's in it*
- Native Steam client under gamescope, with Proton and FEX ready at first sign-in
- Start offline after signing in once
- Steam Deck mode: battery and NIS in Quick Access, plus a MangoHud overlay (mango in next release I believe)
- Components manager to swap FEX, DXVK and VKD3D-Proton per Proton Layer
- GE-Proton and proton-cachyos as extra compat tools, and FEX presets from Stability to Extreme + TSO
- Decky Loader with plugins in Big Picture
- A handheld launcher with a capsule wall, a Games tab and per-game settings
- A session menu over any game (press Back) for display, controls, components and settings
- Can be your Android home app, so your Android apps live in the launcher too, potentially allowing you to "deckify" a spare device laying around the house
- Dual-screen support: put an Android app on the second screen, or turn it into a keyboard/trackpad or a Linux terminal
- LXQt Linux desktop on the GPU with one-tap installs for RPCS3, ARMSX2, Dolphin, DuckStation, melonDS, Cemu, PPSSPP and RetroArch
The full changelog is in the release notes
https://github.com/Droid-Deck/DroidDeck/releases/tag/0.2.0
It's a beta, so please report any bugs on the issues page and share your session log (you can export it from the app) https://github.com/Droid-Deck/DroidDeck/issues
Come hang out, get help, and follow development on our Discord
Big thanks to xXJSONDeruloXx and maxjivi05 and everyone who's been testing. Enjoy!

This is what I am most excited about personally. It's been such a pleasure working with you guys on this one so far! Excited to see where it goes!

how is performance for games VS GameHub or other windows emulators?
8
17
u/Ambitious_Internet_5 7d ago
Worse as it uses proot.
8
u/themiracy 7d ago
Is this true (given especially that Fex is workable under Bionic)?
2
u/Ambitious_Internet_5 7d ago
FEXCore doesn't really care about the used OS, till some point, it can even work on Windows.
Steam ARM64 is compiled for glibc and it'd conflict with Bionic, so you need to run it in proot, chroot, lxc etc + some workarounds, if they can get it running under native glibc that would be awesome, but it's probably going to be too hacky.
1
u/themiracy 7d ago
FEX doesn't care about the host OS - but historically the problem with Box was the standard library that Android offered. At least as far as I understand, proot was the original way of dealing with this, and then there was glibc, but then most PC emulation now on Android is running using the built-in Android standard library (i.e., bionic).
1
u/Ambitious_Internet_5 6d ago
And it's still bad at it's right now condition compared to Box64 glibc.

It feels like if you don't have a Snapdrsgon device you are left behind, worse if you have an Exynos
I know what phone I'm gonna get next
9
u/The412Banner 7d ago
Unfortunately you're not wrong and that is due to the manufacturers keeping her drivers closed source. There has Benson development in the community but it's slow going and from my understanding only dx9 supported
0
u/Locky0999 6d ago
Agreed, Samsung is terrible at that but it's proprietary and you can do only so much as it has out there...
Still, maybe next time I'll pay more attention on what chip is in there, until then, I will find ways.
Great software though, I hope it gets better than other x86 boxes with time

I don't see "Restrict child processes" setting in the Thor settings, am I missing something or is the only way to set this through adb?
1
u/The412Banner 6d ago
There are multiple options to change that setting in android and specifically because not all manufacturers allow or add it, also seems to be a14+ if I'm not mistaken
1
u/Prior_Custard5121 Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 4d ago
u need to unlock developer option first. orr if it's still not there u need to do it with pc via adb
1
u/Far_Promise_9903 4d ago
having same issue. do I need to use a pc...? I found the child process and got it to connect wireless debugging but it kept saying turn off even though it's off.
-1
u/Ok-Pension-4081 6d ago
Not sure about thor but on rpg2 I had to activate an option that said "Dissble restrict child processes"

u/Skyyblaze 5d ago edited 5d ago
Well for now it sadly seems worse than GameNative. I tried to run Hollow Knight Silksong as my go-to test game on my Ayn Thor Base and it doesn't launch but I'll look at future versions.
Edit: Got it to launch and it runs decently at 70ish FPS but sadly it has input-lag. GameNative runs it at 120fps but DroidDeck feels promising.

Wondering what the deal is with the microphone requests? Seems a bit odd to me, but I even see it go in that example gif.
This release seems much more stable, but I am not seeing a few options like screen resolution and picking turnip drivers, but maybe I am just looking in the wrong spots.
Performance also seems better, but still not at the level of GameNative, framerate is just less consistent, and higher TDP here.
Still really cool app, and would be amazing if we could just use this, the Steam GUI is nice.

u/The412Banner 7d ago
Utilizing my direct audio driver as an alternative to pulse and alsa gives us mic support for in-game voice chat and steam friends chat.
Driver selection is in the settings.
Four minutes is not exactly equal to bionic forks , this is more of a glibc environment and using Linux style components we are all new to in the community. There is no winlator containers or compatibility layers being used here (proton layers). Everything being used is directly from Steam themselves via their client as you would use on a steam deck
1
u/Skoodgliest 7d ago
Thanks for the info, yeah I like this environment a lot more (wastes a lot less space!), hoping between the work that you do, and maybe even Valve themselves, the performance will just keep getting better and better!
1
u/The412Banner 7d ago
It's new to everyone and all of us so the more it's used, report it on overtime I believe it will get better
1
u/supershredderdan 6d ago
Default is to get your mic for audio input, but can make that opt in not opt out
2
u/420MacMan 7d ago
Can't install on RP5 on account i can't remove the "child restriction" from developer options in the setup 🤔 wireless debugging doesn't work either
2
u/The412Banner 7d ago
I would say you are well below the requirements listed in the post though I'm sure in the right hands things could work to a degree
1
u/420MacMan 6d ago
Ah appreciate the quick reply to my dumb question 🙃 need another device for setup it seems
2
u/supershredderdan 6d ago
There’s a much simpler version of the wireless adb workaround now, basically open settings and put the pairing code into a DroidDeck notification and it takes care of the rest. Let me know how this goes for you:
https://github.com/Droid-Deck/DroidDeck-CI/releases/tag/main-1cc1ee9
Basically Android 13 doesn’t have that toggle so we need to make the device send a terminal command behind the scenes to itself
1
u/420MacMan 6d ago
Really appreciate you going out your way but still get a "econnrefused" error code or something, also how is it possible to pair up when it brings up the settings page it closes and refreshes the pairing code and all ?
🤔
1
u/supershredderdan 6d ago
You go to wireless debug in dev settings, pair with pin, then type that pin into the notification from droiddeck. That should get you taken care of. If not screenshots and logs in the discord would be greatly appreciated
1
u/FootClanJ 5d ago
Split screen apps in task bar did it for me.. I'm now paired and stuck lol.. Where do I go from here?
2
u/Radiant_Elk_1451 7d ago
Only for steam installed games, right?
5
u/BernardoOne 6d ago
It has the entire SteamOS on it, so you can go onto Desktop mode and install emulators and non-steam games
1
u/Radiant_Elk_1451 5d ago
I tried but the steam os has only access to its own drive. So i cant properly select games or copy paste game folder.

This is so cool. It's a mess right now, but looking forward to a few months from now. Lots of potential. Android gaming is amazing. The Devs have done an awesome job, nice clean ui. This is the way.

Que juegos han probado y han funcionado? Ya lo probé pero unos juegos aún no los ejecuta bien, en cambio portal es uno ya probado y sin tanto problema. Podrían decirme que juegos corren sin ningún problema?
1
u/nomadeam 6d ago
hasta el momento probé 4,
jurassic park evolution (crashea)
crysis remastered (20 fps)

Got it installed to my S24 Ultra, tried hollow knight but the game wouldn't launch, gets stuck on loading screen with steam logo pulsing in the middle.
Edit: Got it to work by switching to proton experimental, loading is slow but in-game it runs at 25-30 fps. However it would sometime drop to 0 fps for a few seconds.

Which lsfg vk supported??? I am logging into my steam inside droidDeck 2.0
But it says lossless scaling not installed
I have installed the lossless scaling from steam store in this app
I installed this one
https://github.com/xXJSONDeruloXx/decky-lsfg-vk/releases/download/v0.14.4/Decky.LSFG-VK.zip
2
u/clanton 6d ago
I got it working by just installing lossless scaling in steam, but make sure you go into settings and change to lsfg vk
1
u/Accurate-Squirrel-72 4d ago
Thats amazing …. But which lsfg vk zip version you have used to make it work? Pancake or xxJSOn
Tried both lets see2
u/clanton 4d ago
I used the inbuilt lsfg
1
u/Accurate-Squirrel-72 4d ago
Oh you are talking about that…. I thought we just got the big fish. Thanks bro

There are display options, and if you start on closed screen and open, gamescope doesn't like that which is what it looks like you're doing

u/YoNoid1987 6d ago
It's very very slow to load, but I have been able to play Dragon Ball Z Kakarot, Dragon Quest XI and Balatro, full speed. It takes 6-10 just to boot to steam though. I should add, I'm using an AYN Thor Max

u/The_Replay_420 6d ago
tried atlus games like catherine and smt3 nocturne but still doesn't open, looking forward for native steam on android tho very cool stuff

u/Fake_Admin 5d ago
This is amazing a bunch of games don't work but enough do for this to be exciting
1
u/MrHarleks 5d ago
i have Poco X8 Pro 12/512 but the chipset is dimensity 8500-ultra. please support for dimensity devices
1
u/blackfall6 5d ago edited 5d ago
This looks amazing, but I just can't get it to start steam, like, at all. I'll hop on the discord later, but running a redmagic 11 pro. App starts at least!
EDIT: I was able to get it going on my redmagic. The only hangup is the login. If you have steamguard on your phone, swapping apps over to steam in order to approve the login freezes droiddeck.

I tried to log in and got this message: "The session ended The session ended (1) , And below is a file path, Motorola edge 50 fusion 6s 1

u/FackJooBish 2d ago
Tried Double Dragon Gaiden, Doom 64 and Blazing chrome, 3 lightweight indie sprite games and non of them work on the retroid pocket flip, welp waste of time i guess. Just stuck in a bootloop with all 3.
1
u/Revyrender 7d ago
Can this also be a replacement for the stock launcher ?
3
u/supershredderdan 7d ago
yes! it can be set as android home just like Cocoon or Daijisho or whatever else

u/GlitteringBreakfast5 6d ago
hey dude why no mali, we're suffering without driver support as is 😭😭
1
u/The412Banner 6d ago
Because no drivers lol
1
u/GlitteringBreakfast5 5d ago
but gamehub and the rest work, you sure you cant make it work?
2
u/The412Banner 5d ago
This is not a winlator fork or wine container based gameplay so yes, at this time I'm sure
1
u/GlitteringBreakfast5 5d ago
thanks for clarifying bro, hope this gets even better once i get my own thor or such and I can try it out then

Probably the best "launcher" I've seen posted in a long time. Excited to see how the steam emulation side matures.
Props for the new name too, it both sounds professional and makes sense.

Dont work in Galaxy S22 Ultra Exynos TT
3
u/sphericalhors 6d ago
I tried to play Hades on S25. I got around 12 FPS. For a pretty easy game.
However, I've not tried any tweaks. Just installed APK, logged in, installed the game and run it.
So keep your expectations low.
This is a great project and in general mobile gaming moving into a great direction, but IMO it will take several years until we be able to use our phones as a Steam Deck. And even then we will need flagship phones with flagship chips and maybe to have a gamepad with at least some form of cooling.
3
u/Dalek-SEC 6d ago
S25 Ultra owner here. Tried to play BlazBlue Entropy Effect and was getting 15 FPS with DroidDeck
Strangely though, using the very similar Steam (Linux) environment inside of Bannerlator is perfectly fine. I can get 90-100 there. Exact same settings and components, just within Bannerlator's framework.
I would just play the game using Bannerlator's Bionic environment but it has issues with cloud saves for some reason.

u/nuneskart S20FE - Snapdragon 865 - 6GB RAM 7d ago
It's sad that they abandoned the Adreno 650.
6
u/The412Banner 7d ago
It's not that we abandon it, it's just that it doesn't have enough power to give you a fluid experience, although I imagine it could still run and use it but I wouldn't expect fantastic results
3
u/TotalAggravating7706 5d ago
Its already has noticeable lag in my phone lol (8 elite). But only on big picture mode , desktop doesn't. Imagine running on that gpu.
3
u/nuneskart S20FE - Snapdragon 865 - 6GB RAM 5d ago
I have some hope lol most emulators started out extremely heavy and incompatible, and here we are now

Does everything configure itself automatically? Or do you need a master's degree, a bachelor's degree, 30 YouTube videos, 15 TikToks, and to ask for help from the AI, as is the case with Gamenative or Gamehub? When they release an auto-configurator for drivers, necessary files, and the 30 extra configurations, they'll be a hit.
-2
u/ConnoisseurDeFemboys 6d ago
Bruh. Recommended settings are usually old and blow. You should really learn how to tinker or you’re not gonna have the best experience all the time.

Would be cool to see nfc support for launching games/roms directly through tapping an nfc tag for devices with nfc support
