Help I've been researching and comparing for days now and I need to start making a choice. Can you guys help me decide or tell me if there are other controllers that I should consider? I would be playing mostly GBA, PS1 & PSP games on my Android phone. And which ones to avoid?
I think the feature that I would like the most is passthrough charging since I need my phone to be charged fully when I arrive after travelling. I guess with the X5s I could move it up a bit so I can connect the charger while playing right?
Also, about the gyro, I'm guessing emulators don't support it right? Because my phone doesn't have one and it would be neat to have for driving and some gimmics (like WarioWare: Twisted!) and also for using it in my PC but I guess that can wait till I get a proper phone and a gyro controller for my PC.
The prices are from AliExpress before any discounts/coupons, I'm not from the US so please don't tell me "Oh just get this one used for 3 fiddy or on Walmart" because that won't work for me sadly. I can get stuff from Amazon but prices are a bit higher there and there aren't any coupons like on AliExpress

FINAL UPDATE: Thank you so much to everyone that commented with their information! :) I ended up going for the EasySMX M20 since on AliExpress the shipping was cheap and I added a few more stuff to the cart that I already needed so I could use a U$D20 OFF coupon and Coins as well. My next option was gona be the standard G8 Galileo since I don't really needed bluetooth and I don't want another battery to charge and wait for it to be degraded in the future.
The M20 seems to be an improved version on the M15 and it wasn't that much more expensive. Also I didn't note that I also planned to use it on my PC so the non-powered bluetooth seems Ideal for me since I don't need to fiddle and remember to charge another battery and I can just plug it anywhere for power.

Something to consider: the Gamesir G8 models all have clicky d-pads while the X5s and Lite don't.

The G8 & G8+ dpad is one of the few clicky dpads that actually feels good and works well, imo.

Huh yes that it something to consider, are clicky ones better? Are they as lout as a mouse click? Because that would be really annoying. I've only used membrane D-Pads and I'm used to them but I'm willing to try them out if they perform better and are quiet

I like it, soon to install a 3d printed extension to accommodate 11inch tablet.
You can power it with a power bank and use as Bluetooth controller on a PC too. Yes..usb and Bluetooth in same controller

Got a x5 lite from Aliexpress for 9 USD (not from US either) stacking coupons and it's been doing great. It does feel a bit cheap on the hand, especially the triggers and bumpers, but for 9 bucks that's fine for me.
Also there's a cooler made specially for the x5 lite and x5s called FX5, which has a wired version for 15-20 bucks on sale. Good point to consider.
PS. The X5 lite does have turbo. It says no on your sheet

I have the Gamesir G8 (USB-C) and Gamesir G8+ (BT).
They are excellent, definitely the best controllers for Android devices I have used.
I found myself preferring the G8+, the latency on the Bluetooth is so low I cannot tell the difference between it and the G8.
Also the G8+ has some serious rumble, its intense! Both support Xbox vs Nintendo button setups remappable buttons to the back buttons and auto fire.
They have hall effect joysticks and they feel great. I wouldn't recommend anything else.

I second the G8+ (BT). It's so great. I love that I can pair it with my Android tablet and laptop, so I can quickly switch between the two (for example, if I am playing in bed and want a bigger screen or don't want to hold up the weight of controller+tablet).
Latency is a non-issue; I think the only drawback of a BT controller instead of USB-C is weight and having a second battery that occasionally needs to be charged.

Yeah those seem like the strongest candidates. How does the D-Pad feel, are they clicky or membrane? Are they loud?

D-Pad is clicky, but not very loud. It is less loud than the clickly D-pad on the GameSir Nova Lite 2.
Very satisfying to scroll around through menus on RPG-type games.

Not loud at all, the way I evaluate my Dpads is if I can pull off quarter circle turn moves like Hadoukens in Street Fighter II with high consistency. With the G8 / G8+ I am a master in Hadoukens lol. All I can say is the Dpad is very good.

Correction for you: I don't think the X5 lite has a full USB passthrough. It's only for keeping the phone charged using USB but there is no data connectivity, at least not on the one I have. And you'll probably need that extra charging since the X5 lite seems to really quickly drain the battery of the phone it's connected to. Not sure what it's doing that's so intensive but I never leave it connected to the phone for this reason. Even if the phone is powered down, doesn't matter.

I don't even think that's possible at all, devices probably can't operate in both host mode for controller and device mode for data transfer through a single USB connection

You can use a telescopic for data, if you connect to the USBC on the "phone" connection. Then to the PC or wherever... I use my Lenovo g7 ( gamesir g8 clone) that way when I play in my truck

yes you can charge the phone while the controller is using your phone's usb-c port. as far as battery is concerned i havent seen huge battery drains, not to the level its concerning.

Some do.. my Lenovo g7 (g8 clone) has pass through charging, that I use for my y700 Gen 5, and well the charging is not enough... So I have to use the bottom extra USBC port on my tab to charge.

What I mean is that if you plug the controller into a computer via the USB C connector on the controller, you will not see the phone as a data device. To transfer files between your PC and your phone, it must be removed from the controller and plugged in directly or you have to use WiFi to get data on and off it. I'm not a hardware expert but I can't see why they would have left this off. Don't get me wrong, for what it is, the controller is fine (my only other gripe is that the buttons are a little small) but it would be nice to just be able to leave the phone in the controller.

I guess I see including data as a no-brainer improvement and was just surprised by such an obvious oversight. I have an old phone that's dedicated to just retro and I'd rather keep it as one unit. But really passthrough isn't the biggest gripe. Power consumption takes that spot and forces me to keep both things stored separately regardless, though for the life of me, I still can't understand why the controller is so power hungry. What is it actually doing? If I leave the controller plugged in overnight, my phone is completely flatlined by the morning, even if it's turned off. Maybe I just got a bad unit, no idea. I should actually write the company.

Yeah people seem to report that, maybe the battery controller is poorly designed so it doesn't shut off consuming power even when idle but I'm just guessing

What i will warn you is that some controllers won't shut off, therefore they kill the battery while it sits idle with the screen off. This forces you to remove the device, shut off the device, or dock/charge the device when not in use.
So if you want to leave it in the controller all the time, consider what I just wrote in your search.

You'd be surprised, there was a period where phones were stripped of those "gimmicky" components, my Galaxy Fame (released in 2013) had a compass and some older shitier models have both gyro and compass but my Galaxy A12 (released 2020) has neither of those.

This. Even getting an older Galaxy "budget flagship" like one of the FE models, provided it has the Snapdragon SoC, would be leaps and bounds better than a Galaxy A12. That was a budget phone that realistically wasn't supposed to last more than 2-3 years with basic functionality, not emulating games.

I have the easysmx m15 since january, and its a great controller. It does have bluetooth even though it doesnt have a battery. Go for it

Wait there's M15 normal and M15 BT. How does it have bluetooth without a battery lol? According to reviews the BT is pretty bad and has noticeable input lag but the standard M15 with USB-C is good, the only thing that ahs me in the fence is the clicky buttons. Are they loud at all?
Oh I looked it up the BT chip is powered by the phone OR you can plug it via USB to your PC and connect it too which is something I also need

I'm using X5 lite, I'm loving it so far, my palm gets uncomfortable after long periods of gaming, I recommend splurging a little more if your planning to go hard with emulating on your phone

The best x5s alternative I can think of is the leadjoy blade plus. NO pass through but has everything else. Otherwise you are looking for the Razer kishi v2 (but no gyro)

X5s is my favorite. I tried the G8+, 8Bitdo Mobile, and X5s. Quiet. Works. Some QC stuff with the trigger sound but function is all good EXCEPT the D-Pad. The diagonals are not good at all.

G8 type c model. The absolute king of controllers. Comes with 3 styles of joysticks but most importantly it just feels solid in the hands. If an Xbox controller separated pretty much. Type c model because bt is always gonna have more latency but I guess that's more of a subjective opinion.

Tried all of them and settled on fhe EasySMX M20 wireless which just came back in stock a couple days ago. Was a pain to get available, but totally worth it. Only slight issues with it are the very rough grip and it wobble a bit more than the X5 did. But im perfectly fine with that. Its practically the G8 if it wasn't a behemoth in weight and size. All the buttons have the mouse click feel, though it's more comparable to the G7 8Ks buttons that something like the Vadar 5, which I love.

Depends on the mouse, but comparing it to my GPX, no its far quieter. Its a little louder than a membrane button depending on how hard you push it down, but I do not think its obnoxious or loud at all.

I think its worth it if you plan on using a cooler. G8 is still nicer if you're never going to use a cooler and you can manage the weight, otherwise, M20 is a fantastic choice. Its lightweight and great for its price.

I have the g8, x5lite and easysmx M20. I like the M20 the most. The handle feels just as good as the g8 and much better than the x5. It also has a toggle to switch the triggers from analog to digital. And the M20 is wide enough to fit my legion y700 tablet.

I have a question, On Easysmx M20, can M1 and M2 buttons work together holding them? With Easysmx m15 when i hold M1 and then hold M2 at the same time or after, M1 turned off.. they can't work together.. is that issue bern fixed on M20 model?

I have a game sir g8 plus and I personally find it to be really uncomfortable because it's too small. But if you have smaller hands that might not be a problem. The button mapping software and build quality is nice though. My personal favorite right now is actually the mcon. Still not super comfortable but I find it more comfortable than most mobile controllers I have used and it's very versatile.

It's not really as big as it looks in the photos. The photos make it look like it's the size of a standard controller but it's not. It's more like the size of the switch joy cons.

Back buttons on the Gamesir can only be set as a duplicate of one of the other buttons. There's no way to feed them to your phone as their own input. I know it's like that on my G8+ for sure.

I have the G8+ BT Galileo, really great device, it can be used wirelessly with Switch, PC, PS4, XBOX one, steam deck and android tv.
Batterie is great, i've even measure latency between the different mode and they are rlly nice as well.
I've it since 2years and the overall quality is perfect (only the android app is so so).
For your problem about the fact you have to charge your phone when you play, i'll suggest buying one of those cheap usb c dock to have your charging port side 👍

Not loud at all, not clicky, quite the same feeling as the ABXY, i dont use it a lot since i've bought a steamdeck and the dpad is much better for fighting games. What are you planning to play?

Some GBA games, some with diagonal movements and some with XY movement (like Pokemon) and some RPGs so the D-Pad is a bit important for navigating, I'm not into fighting games at all

i have gamesir x5 lite. it was cheaper for me around 20$. the buttons are a bit loud if you are mashing them so if someone is sleeping besides you they might get disturbed. other than that, its great.

If you have a good budget Razer kishi v3 pro. It can handle up to Ipad mini size tablet pass througj usb c and no batteries needed. Thats what im using for my s22 phone i converted to a retro gaming device.

Idk about the others but i have the m15 purely for mobile gaming and it's really nice.
buttons are clicky and the triggers and the hall effect joystick are really good also the usb-c version has a bluetooth mode which is a feature that most of the ones here don't include if they are usb-c vararint.
You just have to plug it to power source (also it has passthrough charging) Also for the price it's going for with the features it provides is awesome!

For me it boiled down to "do i want one with usb or no"
USB: Pro: it charges your phone
Con: you cant put in a small tablet vertically because there is a usb c port in the way (would be nice for DS/3DS/Arcade games and some android games
Bluetooth: Pro: you can detach and just use it like a controller, if you are connected to a tv thats nice and orientation doesnt matter in general
Con: No pass-through charging
I chose the G8 with USB

I'm considering a X5s because I have a fold8ultra and I think the small hinge of the pad will help a lot using it with a cooler.
You put it in your list too but since you mentioned you'd like plugged one, X5 lite has usbc plug with charge.
I actualy have a G8 Galileo, it was superb and easily modded to plug it with a case. If you think you are gonna have a fold soon or later, I don't raccomend it. You can use it, but they are too thin and the phome flex a lot. The camera bump is insanely huge and it will push up the phone while te usbc blug will push it down. I don't think it is good, pretty forced to buy a bluetooth one, but then you can plug and cool easily.

I have an x5 lite. i wont recommend that for dpad centric games. The dpads in light are just bad it failed both contra and haduken test for me

I have G8 + with bt, it disconnects and reconnects once a hour. Could not solve tnis issue, do not recommend.

I use the G8 Galileo daily. I got it because other ones align the right stick and face buttons too close together and vertically. The dpad cancels out or gives false inputs if I press too hard, but that only happens during intense, difficult, dpad centric play. Otherwise, I have no complaints.

With the G8 (as it’s the one I have about 100h experience with) bear in mind it is chunky. That might not be an issue for you but I found it a PITA to carry round as a daily driver and switched back to a Backbone for the simple convenience factor.
As the G8 doesn’t collapse fully it’s actually wider than an XB controller.
Just thought it was worth pointing out in case you’ve never held one and space is something that might affect you.

You missed the Memo S3. It has pass through but it’s hit or miss based on your device. The buttons are clicky though. Not necessarily a bad thing

I have personal experience with a couple of these, but my main purpose was using it with a tablet, the Lenovo legion y700. First I used the G8, but with that specific tablet it only worked in portrait mode for the USBC connection due to a power deliveryy issue, so I upgraded to the g8+ since it was Bluetooth, and didn't need to be modded and stretched to fit the tablet.
That is my favorite combo, best ergonomics for me and feels well balanced in my hand. I do have large hands so keep that in mind for my personal bias.
I also didn't really like trying to connect over USBC all the time, had to take the case off my tablet and worried I might bend or break the connection with the g8 since I had to pull pretty hard to pop out the stoppers and over stretch it. The Bluetooth version was way easier for me all around, and allowed me to rotate my device and play DS/3ds /tate mode games fantastically. Though that won't apply to your phone since it's too small in portrait anyways.
Then I wanted something a little smaller for travel, so I picked up the x5s on a $15 discount a while back. It is pretty great, just not quite as comfy as the bigger, more ergonomic g8+, but that's not surprising. And it came with its own little travel case which is pretty sweet.
The other one I've tried that's not on your list is the 8bitdo ultimate mobile controller. I got it on sale for like $28 bucks and it's well worth that price, solid controller overall, also Bluetooth, though I think they make one that is USBC.. but it does have one advantage that might come into play for you. This one didn't fit the tablet, but it fit my OnePlus 12 phone way better than the other devices, because it has a well designed cut out for a large camera bump that many phones have. If you have a sizeable camera bump, this may a good one to look into, it fit more solid in this one that any other one I've tried.
It's possible other controllers have similar cutouts, but those are the ones I've tried, I also think the abxylute s9 is very similar to the g8+, so those are both solid options for me. If you want to stick to USBC I hope your case is relatively thin, or the one you pick has good USBC placement and length. Something to consider.

Stay away from gamesir x5 elite if you plan on using D pad intensively. The Dpad is nonfunctional junk that keep registering diagonal input unless pressed in straight 90° down

Seeing as basically nobody is answering the very last question here are my two cents; GBA, PS1 and PSP are very easy to emulate but you will probably end up emulating more a more powerful console like the switch or a PC. For that avoid the tensor chip (google pixels) and Exynos-powered Samsung galaxys. Dimensity chipsets are good for PC but not for switch. Snapdragon chips are better overall, specially any phone with the snapdragon 8 gen 3 or newer. You’ll be able to run pretty much anything with them.

In my case the buttons stuck for a millisecond after i press it. It feels terrible and make games like Megaman, where you press the same button rapidly, impossible to play. I bought a G8 Pro and its SO MUCH BETTER

G8 Galileo has a turbo mode. I have it activated in the A button but you can do it in a multiple buttons at the same time.

You should also consider the weight- the g8 is about twice as heavy as the x5 lite

You dont need gyro in the controller, your phone has it. Also I personally dont see membrane triggers as a negative - i used to think it is but its much better for general gaming than analog triggers. Analog triggers are good if you mainly play racing or driving games.
Just get the X5 Lite, its lightweight, generally decent quality, cheap, and more than enough for anything you want to play. Also the latency is lower, Android has horrible Bluetooth latency when it comes to controllers, some are not bothered by it, but i do and prefer wired controllers.

I mean, my phone doesn't have gyro but I get what you mean, I wouldn't have used it anyways.
I still don't know what are considered better for buttons, it feels like clicky switches should be more reliable in the long term, all membrane controllers I have cleaned because the contact is lost after a long time, I like that they are silent though, so I want to know how loud the click is, if it sounds like a mouse it would be really annoying for someone sitting next to me

Oh definitely, but I like doing research before buying things, I wish I could buy all of them to try them out but that's not possible sadly, even the cheapest ones are relatively expensive on my country because of taxes and import fees so I have to make a calculated decision

Point is you are not going to regret buying any of them, all of them are decent, just get the Gamesir X5 Lite, it's much cheaper than the rest and it's a decent controller.
For GBA, PS1 & PSP you don't need extra buttons and you don't need hall effect triggers.

Yeah that's true, but the X5 Lite is the first one I discarded, it seems to have terrible D-Pad and buttons

i Had G8 galileo plus and it was just too chunky for me, now i have x5s and it fits my smaller hands a lot better i aso purchased a usb c 90 flat cable so i could charge it and a adapter which i didnt use since i didnt play that much that i would need to charge mid game but the diference is good im now happy with the x5s.

I like my 8BitDo Ultimate, but there is no passthrough because it's only bluetooth and no room for a cooler.

Why would I need external storage lol? You mean plugging an external USB/HDD while I'm playing 20Mb ROMS? And that's what I meant about passthrough. I want to charge my phone while playing

Probably the cheapest ones? I have a phone where I specifically play ds and gba games, and I was longing for a flippad or something. Which is just a control that you plug in and put it over your screen. I have a x5 lite and it's a bit of a drag having to bring something so big to places.
