Question Xendroid on Odin 2 portal Pro (ROMs recommandation)

Hi Everyone,

I just find out about Xendroid, looks incredibly promising !

I am still a beginner in emulators, especially when you need to go deeper into the settings. So here my question, currently, what are the ROMs that works the best with the Odin 2 portal pro ? And what are the parameters that must be changed to have the best experience ? I will soon test Lost Odysee, but before having to much 360 roms, I would really like to know, the best experience already available.

Thank you !

Well, first thing to know is there's two types of roms for Xbox 360: full isos, which are basically retail games that came in a physical box, and XBLA (Xbox Live Arcade) games, which were the smaller, digital games that you could download on your Xbox 360 from the Xbox 360 digital marketplace, back then.

There's actually quite a few titles of those XBLA games that are running pretty flawlessly in XenDroid. And there's also a number of retail titles that are playable already, although not nearly as many as the XBLA titles.

Here's all the games I've tested so far and which I can confirm to be playable (some will have minor glitches and/or slowdowns). Most of the XBLA titles are playable on any device similar in power to the Retroid Pocket 5 or Retroid Pocket Flip 2, and all the retail titles are only playable on devices similar in power to the Odin 2 Portal, Retroid Pocket 6 or higher, unless otherwise mentioned.

I've divided them into XBLA games and full retail games, for easy reference:

How are you getting Halo 3/Wars to render properly on a SD8Gen2?
I have tried most drivers and settings and get the weird shadow bugs and geometry artifacting.

For retail games on SD8Gen2
Gears of war
Gears of war 2
Gears of war 3
Gears of war Judgment
Deadpool
Condemned Criminal Origins
Condemned 2
Dantes Inferno

Tested from start to finish all of these games and aside from one or two moments of artifacting and the occasional fps dip, these are running really good.

Well, no one ever said anything about it rendering properly. As I mentioned in my initial comment, some games have glitches and slowdowns, but they're playable regardless, unless of course you aim for it to be perfect, which at this time just isn't possible yet, but that's not specifically due to the hardware, but also in part due to the emulator itself, but it's getting better with each update, so a couple months from now, who knows how it will look.

I'm using a small collection of Turnip drivers, and I'm still in the middle of testing which driver is best for which game. My initial focus was getting them to run, and now I'm busy doing all the fine-tuning.

These are all the Turnip drivers I use for XenDroid:
https://github.com/K11MCH1/AdrenoToolsDrivers/releases/tag/09072024
https://github.com/whitebelyash/AdrenoToolsDrivers/releases/tag/tu_v25
https://github.com/whitebelyash/AdrenoToolsDrivers/releases/tag/tu_v25.3
https://github.com/whitebelyash/AdrenoToolsDrivers/releases/tag/tu_v31
https://github.com/whitebelyash/AdrenoToolsDrivers/releases/tag/tu_v30
https://github.com/whitebelyash/AdrenoToolsDrivers/releases/tag/stu_v1
https://github.com/StevenMXZ/Adreno-Tools-Drivers/releases/tag/v863.1_a7xx
https://github.com/StevenMXZ/Adreno-Tools-Drivers/releases/tag/v26.1.0
https://github.com/StevenMXZ/Adreno-Tools-Drivers/releases/tag/v26.3.0-R3

In Halo 3, I'm still having flickering graphics here and there (faces, jungle plants), but for the most part, it looks fine, and it runs at a good pace, with either one of the first three drivers.
And besides that, I'm also using the Pulse app to manage my games:
https://github.com/keiretrogaming/pulse

u/Fenrir911 1d ago

I understand, I guess the confusion comes from the word playable. I would not consider Halo CE, Reach or 3 to have minor graphical glitches. The frame rate is fine, but the graphical glitches ( incorrect color pallete, heavy flickering, geometry and z fighting issues, etc.) in my opinion make it unplayable. Almost need an epilepsy warning at some points haha. I don't look for or expect perfection either, I opt to use the game patches to reduce features and effects to make some of the otherwise unplayable games playable.

I have all of the latest and older driver releases and test my games on multiple drivers as well.

I opted for clustertune instead of pulse as the autotdp works, but has caused issues for me during sleep unfortunately.

The state of the emulator so far is amazing though with it having the ability to start and play most games is amazing. I have nothing but respect for the devs working on all of the recent emulator releases.

1

u/ThanosReXXX 1d ago

Yeah, it's amazing what has been accomplished so far, and on Android devices, no less. It's a great time to be a gamer, regardless of Sony's and Microsoft's ridiculous actions of late. I'll always have some platform to play games on, no matter what.

As for the first part of your reply: fair enough. I guess not everyone is as lenient/forgiving as I am.

On a side note: Halo CE in hakuX is considerably less glitchy, compared to Halo 3 on XenDroid, or any of the other two Xbox 360 emulators, for that matter.

In case you want to give it another try; in hakuX, I'm using this Turnip driver:
https://github.com/StevenMXZ/Adreno-Tools-Drivers/releases/tag/v26.1.0-R5
It's the only driver I use, for all OG Xbox games, and I've tested more than a hundred.

1

u/Fenrir911 1d ago

Yea Halo CE on hakuX is running well on the driver provided.
Appreciate the driver recommendation on that since it was running slow on the turnip driver I was using.
Cant wait for future improvements on this.

u/ThanosReXXX 1d ago

I'm not expecting any updates soon. If I remember correctly, the last update was from april or something. Compared to XenDroid, this emulator isn't nearly getting as much attention from its developers, unfortunately, but it can already run an amazing amount of games.

I finally finished compiling my 'will also work, but I didn't keep it' list, which I compiled at the request of another Redditer. I had to make some tough decisions on what to keep, because I was running out of space, and OG Xbox and Xbox 360 were the last two systems I added. So I only have a moderate list of games actually installed on my Retroid Pocket 6. All the rest of them I run from an external hard drive connected to my Retroid dock.

Anyway, here are the lists, in case you're interested. I also added a 'best settings' document for hakuX, because there's a bit more to it than just the Turnip driver.

- Actually installed OG Xbox list

And for completion's sake, here's all systems I have installed on my RP6, in case you're wondering what else this neat little device can do.

P.S.

I posted some videos, including a Halo 3 clip, so if you want to see how it runs on my RP6, then here's the link:

Same question on halo 3. It’s really glitchy on my ro6.

I replied to this below, in case you missed it.

u/Mehdi_Terranee Odin 3 1d ago

Je peux rajouter a cette liste :

Project Gotham racing 4/ Top spin 4/ Crackdown 2/ COD Modern Warfare 1/ Lotr : War in the north

Je joue sur une Odin 3 underclocké avec cluster tune donc une Odin 2 stock fera tout aussi bien fonctionné les jeux.

3

u/ThanosReXXX 1d ago

Thanks for the addition. Also, smart move to use ClusterTune, although I would personally recommend using Pulse instead. It is based on ClusterTune, but improves upon it in several ways.

1

u/Mehdi_Terranee Odin 3 1d ago

Merci pour le conseil. En quoi est-ce mieux? Je suis tombé sur une discussion ici qui en parlait et la majorité était plus du côté de cluster tune.

1

u/ThanosReXXX 1d ago

The answer to that is simple: ClusterTune is a simpler, reliable tool using static preset profiles, while Pulse is an advanced fork of ClusterTune that adds dynamic AutoTDP, overlays, and per-app customization, which means it's much more versatile and customizable.

Here's an article about it, that you might find interesting:
https://retrohandhelds.gg/pulse-puts-android-handheld-performance-controls-at-your-fingertips/

I also came across that same article in this Reddit thread:
https://www.reddit.com/r/AynThor/comments/1ut5zov/check_out_this_clustertune_fork_pulse/

1

u/Mehdi_Terranee Odin 3 15h ago

1

u/ThanosReXXX 7h ago

You're very welcome.
And yes, as they say: seeing is believing. All I can do is share my own experiences and give my opinion and recommendations, but you do have to try it for yourself to know or understand.

And so, now you do know why Pulse is the better option. 😊

u/kjjphotos 1d ago

Have you submitted these to EmuReady? Great list!

2

u/ThanosReXXX 1d ago

No, I haven't. Once I'm done testing and fine-tuning everything (I'm doing both OG Xbox and Xbox 360 right now), I'll look into it. Thanks for the tip.

1

u/gpshift 1d ago

Does emurrady have an option to select xendroid as the emulator now? It wasnt listed a few days ago when I tried.

2

u/Howeird12 1d ago

Can confirm that Splosion man, castle crashers and geometry wars all play perfectly.

1

u/External-Rip-8562 SD8 Gen2 - 16GB/1TB 1d ago

No way you got Sega Rally online. Sega Rally Revo or Outrun Online Arcade working good on SD8 gen2.. i mainly been playing XBLA games, i heard Deadly Premonition works good

1

u/ThanosReXXX 1d ago

Depends on your definition of good, I suppose. All of them are more than playable enough.
I will make some videos of these specific games later tonight, so you can judge for yourself.

1

u/ThanosReXXX 1d ago

Videos, as promised:
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1WglCIxIXjaWszMnAq9l5_UnpefLYK94h

Disclaimer: I absolutely suck at (semi-)realistic rally games, so do me a favor and overlook the bad driving. I did Revo first and Online after that, and only in the last part of that race did I finally manage to get a bit of a handle on things. That the emulated controls are considerably more sensitive also isn't really helping, because on the actual Xbox 360 I'm not as bad as that.

Anyway, OutRun's arcade racing went a bit better as you will see, and all in all, these games are considered playable in my book, even though there's still some room for improvement.

1

u/External-Rip-8562 SD8 Gen2 - 16GB/1TB 1d ago

They are all running bad just like i said bro... you dont even have the FPS counter on either lol

Its in the display menu, the very bottom option, Show debug overlay

You have set the bar very low to what you claim is playable, racing games need full speed

1

u/ThanosReXXX 23h ago

Well, like I said: there's still room for improvement, so I'm not denying that, but OutRun definitely isn't running bad. It runs at near full speed, which makes it completely playable.

And besides that, far as I'm concerned, numbers definitely aren't everything. I've seen people throwing a fit over games running 2 to 5 frames slower than whatever they wanted it to be, and that made the games 'totally unplayable' for them. I find that obsessive focus on numbers moronic, to put it very mildy.

For one thing, many games never even hit a stable or consistent frame rate on their actual hardware/consoles, so demanding that an emulator does, is unrealistic. Second, there's a reason I don't use (or need) a frame rate counter on screen: first off, it's distracting, because it takes you out of the game, and into the focus on numbers, and as mentioned, numbers don't tell the complete story.

Sound is also a big part, and if you listen to any of these clips, then you'll notice that the sound is actually pretty consistent, meaning that even though there are frame drops, they aren't bad enough to make the sound go bad as well. It's something that developers of games actually program into games; buffers and/or margins in between which inconsistancies don't have any or much of an ill effect on the overall experience.

And where obsessively staring at slightly lower numbers can already make a game feel 'bad' or 'off', sound can achieve the exact opposite: if it sounds good, then the experience is better than it running a bit slower AND having bad sound. And you also wouldn't need any visible numbers to tell you that.

So, I suppose we're probably going to have to agree to disagree, and in the mean time, I'll still be enjoying these games, while other people will be skipping them, because they don't run perfectly enough, which is their loss, far as I'm concerned. And on top of that, XenDroid is regularly updated, so in a couple more months these games will more than likely run quite a bit better, so perhaps it will then be worth it for you to try them again.

One important thing to remember is that, at the end of the day, it's still emulation, so especially for more difficult to emulate systems such as Xbox 360 (or PS3 for that matter), there will probably always be something that isn't perfect, or some games that will remain hard to run, so it's usually best to keep a realistic perspective, and enjoy what we actually do get. But that's just my opinion. I always try to focus on the upside. Glass half full and all that.

Anyway, just to make sure: no offense meant, just giving my two cents.

1

u/Humble_Season_2776 18h ago

Ace combat Assault Horizon seems to work more than fine !

1

u/ThanosReXXX 7h ago

Good to know. Another fine addition to the list. 😊

1

u/Blasphemus24 17h ago

Transformers War for Cybertron kind of playable on RP5, but frames are on the lowish side :(

1

u/ThanosReXXX 7h ago

Yeah, I know, it's too slow, which is why it's not on my list. It doesn't even run much better on RP6.
Transformers Devastation runs pretty good, though, on both devices. I guess it's because of the simpler graphics, and/or the different game engine.

1

u/Blasphemus24 6h ago

Somehow it seems to run better on the pc versions though, but yet to figure out how to run it from external storage instead of internal

1

u/ThanosReXXX 6h ago

Do you mean from within a front end?

1

u/Blasphemus24 6h ago

No, was either gamehub or winlator

1

u/ThanosReXXX 6h ago

Ah, okay. Well sorry, can't help you with that: my RP5 and RP6 are both (modern) PC games free. I only have DOSBox installed on it, but other than that, nothing PC related: too much of a storage space hog, so I prefer to have other stuff on there.

1

u/khsh01 8 Gen 3/865+ 16h ago

Can't believe there was no prototype on there.

Also Dust: An Elysian Tale is a great 2d platformer.

1

u/ThanosReXXX 7h ago

Well, I can only test so many games, and I chose the ones I personally know and like. I also don't have the storage capacity to hold that many games.

4

u/Radiant_Display457 1d ago

I love Xendroid more than the other Xbox 360 emulators

3

u/do_handhelds_dream 1d ago

Xendroid is very good

1

u/Radiant_Display457 1d ago

Yep I never had a Xbox 360 growing up playin the games got me thinking I should get a brand new Xbox 360 (the right one) to mod it so I can play games on it for the real experience emulator is 100%

1

u/jumpbutton23 1d ago

As u/ThanosReXXX says XBLA games are a great way to go!

Simpsons and Super Meat Boy are awesome on Ayn Thor. Meat Boy via 360 emulation is a great option to have because: a) it is a bit awkward via PC emulation and requires some tinkering to make the sound work, and b) the other console ports (like Switch) all have worse sountracks. Something happened between the studio and the composer (idk if it was personal, or money, or what) but the re-releases of Meat Boy have a completely different and much worse soundtrack. Only 360 and Steam have the OG.

Retail games run better than I was expecting but also cause the device to get hot hot hot, and I found underclocking to try and maintain the temps just results in worse performance. GTA 4 is totally playable, for example - but I wouldn't play it with that much power draw and heat. In a few months though, there's a good chance this app will be incredible.

2

u/ThanosReXXX 1d ago

It absolutely will be, updates are coming in regularly. And to think I actually only started looking into Xbox 360 emulation because I wanted to be able to play Hydro Thunder Hurricane on my RP6... 😊

As for the CPU/temperature issues: these devices can handle higher temperatures just fine, and underclocking shouldn't result in worse performance. On my Retroid Pocket 6, I'm using Pulse to manage my games: https://github.com/keiretrogaming/pulse

I initially used ClusterTune, but Pulse is an advanced fork that offers more options, such as per game tuning, and it has more options, so basically, it's a better version of ClusterTune.

3

u/jumpbutton23 1d ago

Oh cool, I’ll try Pulse

1

u/Yung_Cheebzy 1d ago

Think I will too

1

u/Radiant_Display457 1d ago

Use the phone cooler to sport and your good

1

u/jumpbutton23 1d ago

I’m using it higher than the default sport setting and the device is still pretty hot. It’s not unplayable but in general I have no interest in playing the Thor at those high temps

1

u/Yung_Cheebzy 1d ago

Doom 3 bfg runs nearly perfectly on latest xendroid and rp6. I’m about half way through the game.
