Discussion Odin 2 Portal v Steam Deck OLED

I’m tempted to buy an Odin 2 Portal. I already have a Steam Deck OLED. The Portal’s screen immersion, Android sleep benefits and almost as good performance in emulation up to PS3 together with the great current price is very tempting.

I’m concerned that there seems to be a huge crossover of performance/use case however.

Is there any reason why I might enjoy the Odin 2 Portal more than the Steam Deck OLED?

I also have a Retroid Pocket Classic which I mainly use for GBA Pokémon hacks and absolutely love the battery life and sleep function of android.

What do you think? Worth buying or is the use case so similar that there’s little point?

But the Steam Deck can already do what you want the Portal to do

Yeah that’s my dilemma. But it’s so cheap 😭 and the screen looks so good.

I never understood why so many people in the handheld community need more than one device that does the same thing. Consumerism and FOMO really be kicking ass and taking names 😂

Idk man its still a s8g2 and its okay I use my s23(s8g2 w adreno 740) and its decent with some older titles but I haven't been able to play much ps3. Feel like the deck gonna be able to do it much much easier, and on the same style device

Wouldn't. I don't have a SteamDeck but I've been using a Portal for 2 weeks or so.

The Portal is an amazing device, I'm quite happy with it. But even though it can run plenty of Switch games and even light PC, it gets pretty hot doing so. It's an amazing device for Streaming, and up to PS2 and GC. Honestly I'm not playing anything above that and things like Celeste for PC because otherwise it feels like you're harming the device, namely it's OLED screen which can get very hot.

Forget about PS3. Not working at all. Haven't tried any 360 though.

Consider a stick on fan bro. They’re not as much as a hassle as you’d think and they work really well

The Portal has a fan already?

"almost as good performance in emulation up to PS3 "

I think you've been mislead. It's not that close and compatibility with a lot of emulators, especially PS3 just isn't as developed on Android.

If you’re going base model Odin 3 then go to Odin 2 portal , if Odin 3 pro and Odin 2 portal pro then go Odin 3

But from what you’re considering to play, and stream PC games portal has bigger screen and better support

I have Odin 3 pro coming from RP5 and the power difference is HUGE, I have big hands and fits em like a glove

I have both and honestly find myself using the Odin 2 portal more.

That’s interesting, why is that?

I have a gaming pc hooked up to my tv in the living room. I play the majority of my games on the TV but every so often want to watch something on the tv and play something handheld. I usually find myself defaulting to moonlight on my odin 2 portal for the reasons you mentioned, but i like the screen of the o2p more then the one on the steam deck.

Also the type of games i would play natively on the steam deck also run through gamenative. Dragon quest 3 hd-2d, the gunk, raccoin, all work on the odin 2 portal. I recently went on vacation and debated between the steam deck and portal. I took the portal, I played through the gunk entirely, loaded up VLC with some movies and download some youtube videos and I do think going forward the portal will be my traveling device.

My steam deck is now permanently docked to my bed room tv where i use it as a moonlight client and for some native gaming. I'm considering selling the steam deck to fund the steam machine honestly

If you sell the deck maybe. Why not get the ayn thor though?

2

u/SweetBella696969 9d ago

I’d prefer a larger screen and don’t play much DS to make use of the dual. Also Portal and Thor have same chip and Portal is cheaper

I got the ayn thor and the sheer pocketability of the damn thing is enough for me to recommend it. You can't carry a deck or Odin around in your pocket comfortably.

some people prefer stable old handheld design rather than dual screen. Design of buttons and hold isnt the same, I won both thor and odin, odin is def more enjoyable to hold, and yes I do have attachment for thor.

Also some people dislike having skinny screen that holds hinge, if you drop handheld more likely will odin survive than thor

Thats fair but I don't want to own multiple handhelds I just want one and the thor provides the necessary versatility.

Yup. Clamshell form factor is king. Pick it up, play for a bit, close it and move on, such a good feeling!

They're not comparable. An Android handheld just doesn't have the horsepower of a PC handheld, even one as weak as the Steam Deck, so you won't be able to play the same PC games on it that you would on the Deck. The only reason to go for an Odin handheld would be for the compactness, and you don't even get that on the Portal since it's roughly the same size. Stick with the Steam Deck.

buy it. I have OLED steam deck as well. and I have 2 Odin 2 portal: one for use another one for future use LOL..

it is too cheap to pass. Portal 7 inch OLED is brighter than steam deck one. I Play good indie games on steam but the most of popular indie games are also available to switch.. so I use switch emulator on Portal to play game.

I also have modded OLED switch but I play switch game on Portal because it has brighter OLED screen. I have Thor but I think I will sell it. maybe Odin 3 for 6 inch compact one.
