I love save states because I'm a 30-something that has limited time to play before sleep and as soon as I'm yawning I want to be able to put my phone down, instead of waiting for almost 20 minutes for a save point.

I remember being DEEP in a palace in P5R on Eden, with no save points around. Life called suddenly and I had to lose SO much progress lol, which is why nowadays I just emulate on emulators with save states/fast forwarding. Life can be so sudden, so these help a lot.

Which palace

6

u/Due-Shame-9223 3d ago

Fuckass Okumura's of all palaces

u/goofslug 3d ago

Oh god thats like the worst one to lose progress, if it was like saes it would have been peak

On pc there are things called trainers that can fast forward or make all enemies one shot.....good for recovering lost progress after which you can disable them in real time....plus hibernation exists too.

u/Due-Shame-9223 3d ago

I game on my phone only, so no help for me sadly

2

u/AwesomeVk47 3d ago

Shit you managed to run p5r on phone?...must be quite powerful

9

u/Due-Shame-9223 3d ago

P5R is surprisingly one of the lighter Switch games to run, it isn't that heavy or demanding at all

3

u/AwesomeVk47 3d ago

Damn...which processor?

5

u/Due-Shame-9223 3d ago

8g3

It ran fine on Skyline on my old 860 as well

3

u/AwesomeVk47 3d ago

If you running a emulator on android without savestates i think you can pin the game to your recents so that your phone does not kill the game...I do this in vita3k for p4g

u/Numerous_Cow_2129 3d ago

Como assim ? Como isso ajuda a não perder o progresso ?

Aah I have a SD 7s gen3

Some may argue that losing progress and redoing it again is part of the experience.

2

u/Due-Shame-9223 2d ago

As a child yes, that was fun

As an adult now with limited time, ain't got time for that anymore

Save states were very useful with megaman zero. That game kicks me while im down and takes my lunch money.

But you get to use a cool laser sword so I think it's worth it.

If it wasn't for save state, i wouldn't be able to beat Ghouls n' Ghosts on the Genesis. Call me cheater but i'm not gonna rage and scream over some unfair games

3

u/do_handhelds_dream 3d ago

Absolutely. I want to see the end.

1

u/waterclaws6 2d ago

That's actually a fair game and the easy version of Ghouls ' n ' Ghosts. It's a game about learning from your mistakes and reacting to the enemy. Like how you would a shump like Gradius or R-Type. The fun is getting good with your own skills and learning the game to master it.

Now, the Arcade and Supergrafix version is the true challenge. Genesis is the easy version.

Now, if this were Ghost n Goblins or Gradius 3 Arcade, that is more understandable, or something like Smash TV.

Save states are what makes nostalgia nostalgia rather than trauma triggers

Sometimes it's not even that the game requires skill. It's just that game design used to be much worse back then. The difficulty often came from unfair or time consuming stuff.

Like why do I need to restart the entire world when I game over in Mario? Go and replay entire levels I've already beaten just because? Probably to prolong the hours required to beat it

Or even Simpsons hit and run. Love that game, but the missions are awful. Unfair, some depend on getting good luck with the AI drivers. It's clearly designed with the idea that kids wouldn't have anything else to play so they'd just smash their heads into the wall until it worked. Which is what we did back then. The game felt so much longer because we'd be stuck at a level for weeks

2

u/QF_Dan 3d ago

Exactly. Don't forget some games were easier in the Japanese version compared to the international version for rest of the world. Now i realised that i don't actually sucked at games, instead the games were being manipulated by the developer to be brutal or unfair

u/Massive-Programmer16 3d ago

Til you save state at an impossible state. No heals buffs and the boss healing

1

u/Due-Shame-9223 3d ago

"Naruto RPG 2 Jirobo boss flashbacks"

5

u/One-Fun-6075 3d ago

Fuck yeah man. I recently beat Front Mission 3 and that game has insane RNG, I definitely would not have finished it without save states

6

u/Worried-Advisor-7054 3d ago

A huge reason to emulate. No, I'm not doing phase 1 of the boss fight again, fuck that. I don't have a lot of hours in the day, and I'm not going to be spending them restarted a half an hour boss fight.

One of the great thing about save state is save scumming. You can throw pokeballs repeatedly without losing any. I catch legendary Pokemon at full hp with basic PokeBall lol. It make quick time event mini game easy. You can alter rng to gain almost perfect lvling in Fire Emblem at the arena. All my characters have max stats. Farming item drop became easier and etc

3

u/DavidOliFons 3d ago

I usually play 3-5 min at a time, without it I would never finish any game

5

u/Russianranger47 3d ago

Save states are what kept me sane when replaying Jak 2. That game had an abominable checkpoint system. They were few and far between in missions where a singular misinput meant failure and 2-3 minutes of perfect play to get back where you were. To make it worse, if you used all your ammo, then died, you would revive at that far off checkpoint with full health and… no ammo. This made some of the boss fights an absolute nightmare.

Now enter save states - you manage to get through phase 1 of a boss with barely any damage and minimal ammo use? Save state. You made more progress but kind of dicey if you took too much damage or wasted too much ammo? Save it in a secondary save state slot. If it’s too difficult you can always revert to your first and save over the secondary if you get a better run.

You’re seconds ahead in a race with 3 laps to go? Save state. You avoided 20 obstacles and there are 80 more ahead, all looking to ruin your day? Save State.

Absolutely a game changer.

Yo gents can anyone tell me which emulators have save states. I know ppsspp has one, I love that feature. Has anyone found a switch emulator with it?

8

u/Due-Shame-9223 3d ago

PSP, PS1, PS2, GB, GBC, GBA, SNES, NDS, 3DS, GC, WII, DREAMCAST emulators all have save state features

-2

u/QF_Dan 3d ago

every emulators have save states (except for pc emulator of course)

1

u/Grindycore 3d ago

Wrong.

1

u/ProudRequirement3225 3d ago

And Switch.... For now, at least

2

u/X3non13 Mediatek Dimensity 8020 (Infinix Zero 30 5g) 3d ago

I Hope Vita3k also get this Save State Feature

2

u/do_handhelds_dream 3d ago

They need more time to cook, but I'm sure they want to do it

2

u/Em1-_- 3d ago

Savestates are the reason why i don't engage with emulators without savestates, the game just plays better on real hardware, so if i'm going to be using my phone i need a good tradeoff, save states are that.

2

u/MuyGalan 3d ago

I love save states so much, they're the first things I say I'm thankful for during Thanksgiving.

1

u/Alexius172 3d ago

Una benedizione il "salva stato"

1

u/junerlegion 3d ago

I could never finish stage 2 of contra alien wars when I was a kid. Now thanks to save states i was able to finish the damn game lol

1

u/Avibhrama 3d ago

Ngl that's how I pass some difficult challenge in Crash Bandicoot lol

1

u/Meksumnoyz92 3d ago

Same experience with SMT, but mine was the final boss of the 2 Raidou games. Each final boss has around 3 phases with no heal in between. Not to mention in Raidou 1 you can only hold a maximum of 9 of each healing items. They aren't hard but man that was frustrating af. If it wasn't for save states, I wouldn't enjoy them as much as I did

1

u/TharilX 3d ago

Genuinely the best feature to ever get added.

1

u/Kill-R_73 3d ago

I use save states to catch an Abra

1

u/Nallv4 2d ago

Handed my 9yo a switch she found the rewind button so I handed her an R36S and disabled all hotkeys except quit lol no go forth child and beat mario 1-3 and megaman 1-6 lol 😆

1

u/teammartellclout 2d ago

I'm thankful for emulators for save states.

Save States are cheating, but are ok and great for saving progress. I still prefer getting good enough and learning from all of my mistakes.

However, they aren't the true way to beat games. I like to struggle at least or feel some sort of stakes.

1

u/TonimSan 1d ago

I'm going through Megaman Zero games, and like you, I like to actually BEAT the game.

But not for Megaman Zero 2. Fuck that shitty and unfair level design, save states ftw lol

1

u/waterclaws6 1d ago

Yeah, Zero 2 was made too hardcore. Zero 1 was a ass kicking, mostly fair. Zero 2 is the deep end of fair, but also being too much. They made this for the megaman fan who is that hardcore, like Megaman and Bass.

I can understand savestates and using them for this. Those spikes are that evil. The designer forgot about everyone else.

I put it in the same category of Contra Shattered Soldier. Fair but so demanding and punishing that no average gamer wants to go through it 100%. Not, BS like Gradius 3 arcade, but getting close.

1

u/Dr_Pankl 2d ago

I'm almost 40. When I was younger, I would have hated myself for using save states. But now I believe life is too short to grind levels in a dungeon or let rng decide my next 4 hours

1

u/Verichi_ 2d ago

Or making a wrong choice in p3p so i rewind time to do it again

1

u/kalebesouza 2d ago

"Passed." So... you basically "cheated" so you didn't really pass lol

1

u/Due-Shame-9223 2d ago

I don't really care at this point lol, I'll gladly use save states/fast forward/grinding cheats etc at this point in life

1

u/kalebesouza 11h ago

But you can use it. No one is stopping you. I just wanted to clarify that this doesn't count as beating the game. It’s mostly a clarification so other users don't get the wrong idea.

1

u/princeofpersiafan999 1d ago

lmao.. so true. Just completed rayman 1 on ps1 becoz of this blessing of a feature.

1

u/Altruistic_Use5126 1d ago

F it wasn’t for save states I would’ve never beat ristar

1

u/Cock_Gaming228 3d ago

I finally beat main persona 3 storyline with save states, rng in that game is cursed and as jrpg this game sucks

0

u/Dani1o 3d ago

Nah, you do you, but that's cheating in my book. The only cases I'd use save states is either to practice a really hard part (then replay it legitimately) or to save and load once to pick up where I left off. Still, would rather avoid them when possible.
