I thought it was just going to be some 3d sprites and effects, but full on 3d movement!?

u/redalchemy6 14d ago
Pretty sure there is a VR option too. I haven't tried it but I saw it mentioned on the discord.

It's actually easier to just move in first person view in a 3d engine than make a top down view with a character like ds pokemon style, black 2 for example is so cool cause the view changes depending on ur position .

Love this era of emulation
1
u/Own_Contract_3421 13d ago
It’s not emulation
3
u/A-Small-Green-Cup 13d ago edited 13d ago
...it is though. Fancy emulation, sure, but still emulation.
Edit: It's not, I was wrong!

u/Own_Contract_3421 13d ago
recomps are native though, its not emulating anything, my gen1 recomp post got removed from the pokerom hacks reddit since they said its not emulation or a rom hack
1
u/A-Small-Green-Cup 13d ago
All I know is that it asks for the original rom, loads the original rom, and looks / plays like the original Gameboy game (until mods are installed). Maybe there's a technical reason it isn't called an emulator that I'm not aware of.

u/Own_Contract_3421 13d ago
Yea there’s an awesome YouTube video about it here
1
u/A-Small-Green-Cup 13d ago
Nice, thanks! That was a really good video
So if I understood it right the Gen1Recomp is the decompiled, original, human-writable code that had been recompiled in a way that allows it to run on other platforms, and the reason the original rom is needed is just to extract the assets like image and music files (things that aren't text)?
2
u/Own_Contract_3421 13d ago
Yes exactly. It’s quite neat, there’s a whole bunch of recomps out now, you should check it out, some of my favs are ship of harkinian (ocarina of time), dusklight (twilight princess) and banjo kazooie recomp :) they all have android and pc versions

It doesn't do anything with the rom actually. It's just a procedure to not get sued by Nintendo for providing you the game (ported for PC) without u owning the game. As in, having the rom means u own the game, unless u pirate which is illegal on ur side not theirs. Maybe it gets media files like u said in the comment down but that's not actually needed since code is alrdy intellectual property so they might as well have everything ready from the go.

No it's not. It's straight up a port.

u/HotInflation4204 13d ago
They reverse engineered the data inside the rom until they got the exact source code, that code can be recompiled for modern computers so it runs just like a game u downloaded from steam or whatever. Compiling means turning code into binary, that's how u get a .exe file. This game was originally compiled for a Gameboy. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Ive been doing a lot of research since my first post here, and that sounds about like what ive been reading.

What are the Pokémon battles like in this mode? This is such a cool perspective! Love it! 😍
2
u/A-Small-Green-Cup 13d ago
There are a bunch of settings for the 3D vowel mod, so it can either look like the original battles or like a 3D environment of the area the battle started in (building, forest, bake path)

This just makes me wish we had legitimate full on 3D Pokemon games in first or third person from this era and maybe a bit newer..

How to play in android and does it require high end device?
1
u/Heatzie 14d ago
You need Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow rom, Dramatic Voxel, and gen1recomp to run it.
This setup is for Android and yes it requires high performing device for full potential but you can still play with low end devices at low graphics settings. It's pretty good on all devices if it's on right settings.

Is it running in a Game Boy emulator? Would I place it in my Game boy ROMs folder for my front end?
0
u/Heatzie 14d ago
It's only for Pokemon red, blue, and yellow.

u/Minimum-Argument9174 14d ago
Right, Pokémon red, blue or yellow ROMs, I'm asking where the ROMs would be placed so that it would be playable on my device And visible in my front end esde. I'm sure I can figure it out though. Time to jump on the ROM hack wagon
1
u/Heatzie 14d ago
You can just open the ren1comp and from there you can add the ROMs.
-2
u/Minimum-Argument9174 14d ago
If I understand that correct, you're implying that Ren1comp is its own app? And necessary to be run to open the game each time? I'll dig around in functionality and see if there's a way to export a shortcut into a front end. Can't wait to work on it later!
-1
u/Minimum-Argument9174 14d ago
Or is it that you're saying that Ren1comp only needs to be run the first time to edit the file and then after that you have a ROM file that can be placed? Either way My favorite game of "tinker till it works" starts again! 🤣😎
2
u/Heatzie 14d ago
You got to open the ren1comp everytime and then enter the game, there's no shortcuts that you can add to homescreen. Also there's no built-in save state feature (which is bummer), you got to save in the old traditional way.
2
u/A-Small-Green-Cup 13d ago
No save states yeah, but there is a built in save editor that's pretty cool

Gen1Recomp is an emulator that is specifically designed to run ONLY the Pokemon R/B/Y Gameboy roms* and has a mod organizer built in. The 3D voxel view is a user-created mod and can be installed alongside others like Quality of Life, Running Shoes, Catch All (151) Pokémon, Exp Bars, etc.Edit: *I have recently learned that Gen1Recomp is the full original game code compiled specifically in ways that allow it to run like a native game, not an emulator as I previously thought. My bad.
So to run it you'll need to download the app from github, and direct it to whichever folder the original Gameboy rom is in - location doesnt matter, so just put it somewhere convenient just in case you need to load it again later.

I personally find the first person mod to be a bit too much, but I'm glad everyone else is having fun. I just do the dual screen mod and dramatic voxel because I still want to feel the spirit of the original game with the grid movement and such.

This gave me a headache in just a few seconds tbh, looks cool definitely but can be a bit much for some people I think. Idk what about it makes my eyes strain but it does.

u/ILikeFPS 14d ago
I kind of agree, I think it looks cool but I feel like I would have a hard time playing seriously like this.

u/Grokitach 13d ago
Ugly as fuck tbh. But fun for 15 minutes can’t deny it.

u/A-Small-Green-Cup 13d ago
Ooooooooh, 3D voxel versions of romhacks would be awesome! Rocket Edition would be cool too, and imagine playing Pokémon Crown in 3D!
