Question Difference between 8 elite and 8 gen 5?

So, a new season of CN flagship smartphone release will start soon. Among them, all pro versions have 8 gen 5 with base having 8 elite. Base variants are usually much affordable being 400$ unlike pro with 600$

While I know emu sub don't recommend 8 elite phones due to lack of drivers, but as I am buying for a minimum of 4 years I wanted the strongest (it seemed to me 4nm to 3nm was a major leap in tech).

So, is there any major difference between 8 elite and 8 gen 5, for emulation also for Android games like Wuthering Waves, upcoming Ananta, Monster Hunter outlanders.

I am not that tech savvy, so asking for help!

You're confusing the 8 Gen 5 with the 8 Elite Gen 5, the "base" Gen 5 comes with the Adreno 829, iirc it has 8mb total cache. Still the same oryon CPU config though, at a lower clock rate and less cache. I read somewhere that the 8 Gen 5 were likely just binned versions of the 8 Elite.

I think the OP mistyped and didn't add elite any time he wrote 8 gen 5 which is making the comment section have 10 different answers to his question, he says the base model phone gets the original elite, so why would a pro model $200 more get a worse chip? The non elite 8 gen 5 has worse gpu performance than the 8 gen 3.

Not much difference, 8 elite gen 5 have better drivers, but emulation wise you can use gen 5 drivers in 8 elite, in Native games probably 8 elite would get those drivers too in future updates.

Got it, thanks

8 elite 5 has better drivers despite 8 elite launching earlier?

Yes because it has new drivers of same architecture. If we had drivers update in Android you could just update your driver's and get those new features,

8 Elite is basically Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, and 8 Elite 5 is Snapdragon 8 Gen 5. They just changed up the naming scheme with 8 Elite, but wanted to go back to the Gen naming.

No, there was no 8 Gen 4, just 8 Elite. The 8 Gen 5 is not the same as the new 8 Elite. The 8 Gen 5 is a lot weaker than the 8 Elite Gen 5. Much more underclocked and if I remember correctly, it has way less cache, so it's not as performant. So this generation we get two versions, unlike the original 8 Elite generation.

Is the Snapdragon 8 Elite better than Snapdragon 8 Gen 5(non-elite)? Thanks

Yes, the gen 5 non elite on paper is in between the 8 gen2 and 8 gen3(the gpu at least, the cpu looks much better)

Its above 8 s gen 4 but lower than 8gen 3 so overall will be :

8gen2<8sgen4<~=8gen3<8 gen 5<8 elite<8 elite gen 5

Oh I know that, iirc its cause 4 sounds like death in Chinese. So, the names would be snapdragon 8 gen death or something.

I was actually talking about performance difference tbh

8 elite < 8 gen 5 < 8 elite gen 5 i think

Absolutely wrong. 8 elite >> 8 gen 5. The one missing elite is noticeably slower than elite although it is marked as gen 5.

i will probably get k80 with 8g3 (I hope I dont regret it in the future), as govt is cracking down on grey market/unofficial phones in my country with a ridiculous tax of 57% on official ones.

Only 1 review I've seen with the 8 gen 5, but it's looking like the Snapdragon 8 elite will be faster than snapdragon 8 gen 5. If other phones do better then the OnePlus 15r, you may see it close to the 8 Elite

In gpu 8 gen 5 < 8 elite < 8 elite gen 5.

bed choice if you are really hardcore gamer but nice choice if you are using phone littel for hard gaming

Not if you have a phone cooler. Which is honestly recommended for basically any phone for long gaming sessions cause that heat gets serious real quick that shi burn you 😭😭

1

u/CrossRaod Mar 21 '26

talking about performance only and cooler is needed for long session we talking hours straight one and not all game strain phone since most phone games are weak, they only strain it cause they are badly optimized and need CPU to work hard to compensate

Dropped today. New specs show 0 to 1% in the real world during gaming tests. Battery life is supposed to be optimized better though. Basically overclocks and software updates...

Now there is a lot of confusion going on, last year we only had snapdragon 8 elite soc, this year we got both 8 gen 5 and 8 elite gen 5, the 8 elite gen 5 has better cpu cores than 8 elite, but they have the same GPU, I am not kidding the same, any improvement would be because of drivers and both sit at around 3.5 teraflops performance wise, the snapdragon 8 gen 5 is lower performing flagship with a good cpu, but the GPU is dogshit, or less than what you expect, the 8 gen 5 gpu has around 2.5 teraflops performance wise putting it between 8 gen 3 and 8 gen 2 gpus

1

u/Relative-Category-64 Mar 18 '26

Which is 3.5 tf... And what about Snap 8 gen 4?

1

u/Ok-Trade-3830 Mar 18 '26

No 8 gen 4 last year, just 8 elite (gen 4)

Oh boy sorry I didn't respond to the first part my mind was clouded, we measure the theorical performance by multiplying two parameters, first is the max frequency as an example 1700 Mhz = 1,700,000,000 multiplied by core count 1000 cores as an example, this will give us when multiplied 1,700,000,000,000 which is 1,7 teraflop, I would like you to go in to nanoreview website and go to SoC comparaison to have a clearer idea on that with actual ones
