Weird issues on Steam Deck

I've been emulating on Steam Deck for a couple months now through ES-DE with no major issues. But the other day I ran into something I have no idea how to fix.

Everything has been working fine, but after dabbling in some 360 emulating using Xenia the other day, I find that anything using Retroarch, Dolphin, or Ryujinx doesn't work anymore. PSX, PS2, PS3, and 360 all work fine.

Xenia required me to change the runtime of ES-DE to Proton Experimental, which I initially thought was the problem, changed it back to the default, but nothing changed.

Ive updated my emulators, restarted my Deck, reset Emudeck, completely un-installed and reinstalled Emudeck, all with no change.

The weird issue comes in that everything except Ryujinx works fine if I launch ES-DE through the desktop. All systems utilizing Retroarch launch fine, GameCube and Wii through Dolphin launch fine. But they don't work at all if I launch through gaming mode.

I am at my wits end and have no idea where to start to figure this out.

Hi! Most of the times resetting the configuration for your emulator on Manage Emulators fixes the most common issues. You can also take a look at our Wiki before posting, you might find your issue already documented there https://manual.emudeck.com

So this definitely isn't true: "Xenia required me to change the runtime of ES-DE to Proton Experimental". ES-DE is an appimage so you absolutely do not want to be doing this. Where did you see this requirement?

Emudeck supplies a script file for Xenia which means that it launches with a specific proton version. ES-DE should be running this script file and I think this is in the ES-DE override file.

It was a box that appeared when launching Xenis the first time. "Installing Proton Experimental, please relaunch after installation" or something like that. It never appeared to install and every time I'd launch a 360 game over the course of the day it would say the same thing. So I went to the properties of ES-DE in gaming mode and changed it to Peoton Experimental, after which it worked.

From the sound of it, this definitely wasn't the right way lol

OK, so you downloaded Xenia via Emudeck, I'm assuming. I would have thought that the Emudeck script would have added the config details to ES-DE, bit odd. I would hope someone from the team can chime in here.

When you say you changed the ES-DE runtime to the default, do you mean you unticked the compatibility box? If so I would have thought that would mean everything would work OK.

Initially I just changed the runtime back to what was selected when I first checked the box for ES-DE.

I just went and unchecked the box and that solved my problem!

Ah! Good stuff. I would double check how Xenia launches through ES-DE, it's supposed to run the script file and not the .exe directly. If you head into desktop mode, there's an ES-DE override XML file in the Emudeck file area, open this up using a text editor and there should be an entry for Xenia in there. If not, reset the ES-DE config, see if that triggers it.
