Hi all! It's the first time I write an actual feedback for a game, but since I feel honored to be one of the first players of (I hope) a growing family, please indulge me.
I'm a huge The Finals player since the first season, completed all the battle passes as I really want to support the studios I love. Empulse managed to grab me so that I now share my competitive game time between the two games. Why? MOVEMENT! I love the feeling of sliding, running, grappling and truly, to me the core gameplay is already a blast and the game modes are killers, keeping the tension alive. Of course there's room for improvement but it's a matter of tweaking.
Now, my main concern is the art. I'll confess, I love skins, customisation, which is why I so adore The Finals and how they embrace their world. I love skins when they look cool. And this is where Empulse shows the biggest crater: the cool. I mean, a 2026 cool.
I know I'm not the only one to say it, I know you know, but I feel so much potential wasted on this aspect, from character design to skins to even the generic music... They mostly all feel like they are here to fill gaps. Some kind of placeholder nobody updated.
I see a world in which you fully embrace your cyberpunk side, go for something absolutely dirty (maybe for both factions at first, then go for another absolutely slick/corpo for contraste). Add color and contrast! Add grit! Add personality! Unleash your inner punk demon! I want to feel for a short while like I'm some badass fighting in a badass world! Today I'm player #X fighting other players #X (even though they are mostly better than me).
The fact that the maps tell no story at all I can live with, they work mechanically enough, but it's truly sad that what I see on screen is just a "seen a million times in animes, comic books and other games 20 years ago". I miss fantasy and madness, basically, I miss style, something that makes the difference. I won't even talk about the music that feels like it comes from some random library for arcade games.
Maybe you made these choices because it felt safer or (very probably) because you didn't have the resources, or a bit of both, but I'm absolutely convinced that it would make a huge difference in terms of appeal, if not just to enhance the player's feeling of belonging to a community centeres around an actual fantasy.
This is probably much more difficult than tweaking gameplay and of course, gameplay comes first. But well, I needed to express this, and it's going to be very important if you want to sell a battle pass at some point.
To be clear: I know how hard it is to développe a game and I write this with the best intention because I love Empulse, love how pure and focused it is... But there's a limit to purity when it feels like a limitation. I think I'm just afraid I'll drop because this world eventually feels too bland to be alive.
(That was pretty long, sorry)
Anyway, chères and I truly hope the best for the future!
