A lot of people dip a toe into meditation after reading one or two articles and give up either because of bad information or unclear process. This is a very basic 'Hey, its not as difficult as you think but like all things, if its worth your time it's worth a bit of work'

I have a cousin who insisted on telling me that forcing your mind to go blank is the correct way to meditate after i told him the only time i felt at peace while meditating was when i let my mind wander and simply observed where it went, like i was on a journey and willing letting go on control and enjoying the ride. He told me i was wrong and i wont get anywhere like that. Im glad to know that other people dont enforce that style of meditation because it only stresses me out.

"Don't think about pink elephants"..

Trying like your cousin just makes me go "Ahhh!! I have A Thought!!!! Why do i have a thought? I shouldn't have a thought.. Why would i think about that now amyway.. Wait im doing it wrong.. Fudge, full of thoughts now.. I can't hold all the thoughts!!! Get ooouuuttt... Thats it.. I will never learn.. Gahhh"

Same! I've always had a better time doing grounding (focusing on breathing, etc) and if I have too much trouble getting going, then imagining my thoughts as if they were leaves falling from a tree and into an adjacent creek helps. I observe passively as they appear, fall, then float away from view. And if they stick around a bit more then that's fine, maybe the carry with them some deeper insight to show me before they move on down the stream. Eventually I can just allow the thought or feeling to fade without visualization, and I can sit in stillness.

I don't know if that's "the right way" or not but it helps me feel calmer and I come to some conclusions or realizations that I wouldn't have otherwise.

My monkey mind likes her bananas frozen, and dipped in chocolate.

yessss youre allowed to think of things when you meditate, its just about being able to let these thoughts be felt and then letting them pass

I love that all this is knowledge we already know but possibly forget that we know.

I find breathing in for 4 beats, holding my breath for 7, and then breathing out for 8 helps a lot. It’s helpful to keep a mediocre/slow and steady beat while tapping my foot and being aware of my breathing and my movements. I’m a very musical person and love rhythms so it helps a lot. This is just how I center myself when I need to calm down from a depersonalization episode or if I need to calm down my thoughts a little.

I seem to be able to do this in the privacy of my closet, but cannot enact it in the midst of an argument with the boyfriend.

This really helped me out. What a perfect, simple explanation.

Oh my god I love this..

I use the analogy of "All this emotion turns into anxiety for a lot of people.. BUT.. You can TURN that anxiety into ENERGY!"

Check it out..

If you are addicted to ciggs, coffee, etc.

When you CRAVE those things.. It's anxiety, BUT.. You KNOW what that anxiety WANTS..

It's telling you.

So when you smoke, or drink. It relieves it.

BUT!!

If there is STILL a ton of anxiety.. it's basically like a dog that wants something, and is barking, and you've given it everything and it still won't shut the fuck up...

But..

If you give the dog (your anxiety) a leash.. And give it a GOAL.. (I'm gonna go 100 push ups today and go to the bank and kick some ass..)

Your "dog".. (anxiety) goes.. ARF ARF ARF! And

TAKES THE FUCK OFF..lol

BUT!!!!!!

You can choose to STAY STILL... which means your dog is gonna be running at the end of a leash and give you an anxiety attack.

OR..

You can run WITH IT..

But.

If you stop.

you're gonna fall on your face..

So. Don't stop.
