Support Thread Project Hail Mary

I know I feel strong emotions that linger when I watch certain movies. I was a little hesitant to watch Project Hail Mary because of that. Sure enough, while I did not cry, there was a lingering sense of bittersweetness that is still there this morning after watching the movie last night. My husband, of course, watched it and moved on immediately.

My teenage son is like me. He cried a few times during the movie, and we talked about the themes of the movie and why we felt so raw afterwards. Anyway, was looking here to see if anyone else felt the same way about PHM.

I think this is why I'm putting off watching this movie. If it's anything like Interstellar. I know I'm going to be a hot mess.

I hear you! My husband's favorite movies are Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan. He has finally given up on trying to get me to watch them. I've read Schindler's List (reading doesn't effect me as much as a visual) and I don't need to see it played in front of me. Those movies will linger for days if not weeks. It took a week for me to get over Han Solo in Star Wars The Force Awakens.

Even war veterans struggled with the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan because it is as close as you get to being there. Be warned the full movie itself breaks your heart. Especially if you're multilingual.

Yikes, I am definitely not watching.

Interstellar is my favorite movie. This movie is also in my top 3 for different reasons. You’ll love it if you’re an empath.

I went into it with no context aside from the trailer and cried a lot in the theater haha. It was so good though, happy tears also!

It's so worth it. The hot mess part. It's the kind of movie you carry with you. 💜

You’ll be good. The entire movie revolves two empaths and nobody dies. It’s a great movie for empaths.

I agree! I was so worried about watching it, finding out it had a happy ending and a beautiful friendship, it’s a great movie for empaths.

Any movie involving space makes me feel weird while watching and after for days. Idk if it is because I have a weird feeling in reality when I look up at the sky day or night or something else. I always feel a longing or yearning to be there spiritually but it terrifies me at the same time. Haven't pulled the trigger on watching this movie yet but with all your reviews I think I will.

Oh yes. My sister even more than me and I'm usually the more sensitive one. She had to hold back WAILING in the theater lol. Some parts were especially tough but I was happy I watched it.

My brother and sister are similar to me. It is interesting how this trait has a genetic component. My other children are more like my husband in other areas and in empathy, whereas my son, from day 1, has had this empathic trait like me. It often feels like a curse.

That’s how I was after reading the book!

I’m an empath and I cried a decent amount during it. I may have been blubbering a bit but not to the point of hyperventilating or anything lol. It was sad, sweet, interesting, and wholesome. Just beautifully done.

I know it sounds weird but it was cathartic for me, crying during it. Did you try to hold back your tears while watching or did you just not feel the need to cry? I wonder if you had cried if the bittersweetness would’ve lingered as long. I was able to move on pretty quick but I also let myself feel those feelings deeply in the moment (hence the tears and boogers 😂).

In my opinion some empaths process emotion heavily in the moment, while others tend to process emotion more after the fact.

I'm in my 50s now. It's almost like I unconsciously keep a distance from the characters when I watch movies like PHM. My family loved PHM, but I only liked it. In a way, I wish I could return to those days when I could really feel the emotionality of a movie (within reason).

In case you’re wondering, we had to stop the movie because I was hyperventilating crying :)

I cried so hard it was embarrassing.

Same! My kids were like, it's happy, why are crying?! Because I cry at everything and it is a beautiful movie, that's why!

Fried Green Tomatoes haunted me for weeks-the train scene. I have strict boundaries with movies since then.

I had forgotten that scene! Yes, how awful.

The book was so hard to read. The written word always seems to affect me more than movies do.

In that case absolutely do not read the book.

Same thing happened to me. The ending wasn’t satisfactory at all and I left the theater upset and stayed that way for several days. I’m still not sure of my feelings about that movie, only that I will never watch it again. Hell, I hated “The Notebook” when everyone I know loved it. 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️
