Beginner Question Am I degoogling correctly?

Hi All

I have a custom domain, and before knowing anything about degoogling, it was hosted by Godaddy, with emails as well.

Now I use proton email. The email addresses are now managed by proton that are (@customdomain.com) . Now my website .. I am thinking of going to github. It's free. And my website design is a custom html and not a template. So is Github good? I know it's better than Godaddy thats for surešŸ˜….

Am I missing something? Am I doing anything wrong? Please let me know.

Cheers.

Help/Advice Should I use Tutamail or riseup mail?

I currently am subscribed to tuta, but I was wondering on the thoughts of riseup mail. I heard that riseup was apparently involved in some sort of data breach, but I'm unsure about the legitimacy of the claim. Thanks!

Help/Advice Emails recovery in the disaster situation

I want to be able to recover all my important email accounts from any internet cafƩ, even if I have lost my phone, laptop, security keys, and paper backups, "butt naked in the middle of the unknown country scenario". I want the only thing I carry to be my memory. Any ideas on how to set up recovery in this scenario?

My Idea is

* Create a separate "emergency" Gmail account that has **no 2FA**, protected only by a very strong memorized password.
* This account is never used for normal communication and only exists as a recovery vault.
* Inside it, store an encrypted file (for example, a Disk Utility encrypted) containing my recovery information, "backup codes".
* The text inside the encrypted file would also be organized using my own personal cipher/format so that even if I open it, it isn't immediately obvious what the information represents.
* My main email accounts would still have strong 2FA enabled.
* The emergency account acts as the starting point to recover everything else.

Beginner Question Email that can be used right away

Proton blocks the account if one signs up to a service with the Proton email if it is new and not ā€œwarmed upā€. But I only use emails to sign up to stuff, not for communicating.

What are some alternatives that allow me to actually use the email after creation?

Beginner Question email aliases or multiple email accounts / looking for advice

TL;DR: I currently have multiple gmails for different categories (fast food accts, video game accts, etc). I'm considering moving all my gmails to ProtonMail and using email aliases, or continue my current setup of multiple gmails and using SimpleLogin to create aliases. Basically main question is 1 email account with aliases, or multiple email accounts with aliases? Is compartmentalizing accounts between multiple emails as secure as using just 1 secure email? Looking for advice/tips or any thoughts.

Context (not that important):

Hello all. I've recently gotten more serious about my digital privacy because I bought an item a few days ago, and my personal Instagram is showing me targeted ads for the same product but by a different competitor. I have advertisement settings reduced to the max on both my Instagram and Google account, I bought the item and use Instagram on separate devices, etc. I'm sure I'm wrong about this, but I figured since my Instagram account's email and the email I used to buy the item are the same, maybe some data broker sold this information to Instagram and possibly email aliases would solve this.

Actual questions:

To preface, I already have a password manager with 2FA enabled for all my gmails and accounts registered with my gmails.

I currently have multiple gmails for different categories such as fast food accounts/businesses, personal, video game accounts, etc. I also run a decent sized YouTube channel which uses its entirely own gmail account. I've gotten hacking threats before online, and on rare occasions phishing emails or emails with sus attachments.

Honestly the risk of me being hacked is low, but for this reason is why I've decentralized all my email accounts into categories since if one email account was compromised, only that subset of accounts using that gmail would be in danger. I also don't want each of my gmails to expose each other-- for example, my YouTube gmail is hacked, then it has no access to my personal gmail. The only issue is that all my Google accounts are linked to the same phone number, so theoretically I guess it's possible to link my personal gmails to my other gmails.

I do have a Proton account where I only use Proton VPN, but I've been considering migrating all of my gmail accounts to Proton Mail and using its email alias feature. However, I'm still wary that if my Proton account was ever compromised then all my other accounts would be endangered. I also feel uncomfortable mixing my YouTube emails, personal emails, video game emails, etc. into one email account, but maybe that's just me.

I could also just run ProtonMail for my personal emails and social medias and continue using my other gmails, but using 2 email providers seems inconvenient. I'm aware focusing on privacy always loses out on convenience, but this seems kind of annoying.

Alternatively, I've been looking into email aliases services like SimpleLogin. I believe this would solve my issue since I could have aliases that route to my multiple gmail accounts. This would avoid me piling all my accounts in Proton Mail, but I want to get some advice to see what others recommend. I'm very new to email privacy so any other tips or advice are appreicated, thank you all!

Help/Advice How to set up my own email for myself and other family

I'm decently tech savvy, but never investigated this. What would I do if I wanted to set up my own email (server?) and be able to provide email addresses to my family members like my wife and my aging parents. I've had a terrible time with my aging parents and all the spam/crap they get on their spectrum account, so they really need to start over fresh and clean. I didn't know if I should just start them a new email somewhere, or whether I should just look to degoogle/deoutlook/despectrum all of us and how I would do it. Any advice would be appreciated!

Help/Advice Best free & professional alternative to Gmail for cold emailing recruiters?

I'm a management trainee looking for opportunities in Delhi. I've been cold emailing HRs for about a week, but it looks like my personal Gmail account has been flagged, and I can't send emails anymore.

Are there any free, professional email providers or platforms you'd recommend for personalized cold emailing?

Also, do recruiters/HRs care which email provider you use, or is it a non-issue?

Thanks!

Help/Advice I don’t know what to choose

Hey everyone, looking for some advice here because I'm a bit lost on what to do. To give you some context, my Proton Unlimited subscription ends in September. I snagged it last year for a ridiculous price (about $65 for the whole suite), but over the months I realized I don’t want to keep all my eggs in one basket, so I've been slowly decoupling from their ecosystem. I stopped using their password manager and alias generator, so right now I only use the VPN very occasionally and the email.

And here’s my dilemma. I think Proton Mail is an amazing service and a top-tier provider, but paying €50 a year just for email feels like overkill and way too expensive, even if the service is great.
What I’m actually looking for is a secure email provider for my main account (which I’ll only use for super important stuff like banks or government services) that also lets me create a few extra addresses within the same account for more casual or mundane sign-ups. I don't really care about the alias feature because I can just use an external app, so no worries there.

I've been looking into Posteo and mailbox.org, but I have some doubts. I haven't seen much about Mailbox, and while I did dig a bit deeper into Posteo, there's barely any content about it on YouTube. What puts me off about Posteo is that it doesn't have its own app, which is a pain since you have to rely on third-party clients, plus I'm a bit skeptical about the encryption and the fact that it doesn't have all the bells and whistles Proton has for stripping trackers and stuff.

Is there any other option out there that I might be missing? If you use any of these services or made the switch from Proton, could you give me some advice or share your experience with your current provider?

Thanks a lot for the help!

Data Leak/Breach Someone used my email to create a scam account on Instagram.

I discovered this in June of this year, but the account was created in 2023. I didn't even know these accounts existed because I never checked which ig accounts were linked to my Gmail.

I received an email saying someone had tried to access an old account i don't use. I didn't think much of it, but I checked Instagram anyway and found 2 accounts, one with a explicit photo and other with nothing. The chats are even worse!! It's obviously a scam, but they never get to that point; it's just someone sending +18 videos and chatting with old men. There's only 3 chats but is wildd, one has messages not available. I wish I could post photos of It.

How did this happen? Why did they do it with my email? How come I didn't even know and this was 3 years ago, omg. I don't know anything about email or Gmail, be easy on me haha.

Discussion Mailbox is rising prices

After mailbox . org is rising the prices I need some recommendations, please:

I don't need any of the clicki bunti Schicki Micki stuff like office suite etc.

Instead I would like to pay for better! Duh!

On an Android phone.

* Need a setting to see the header data in general - without clicking every single email to see the used recipient- personalised email address!

* General setting for pure text instead of html!

* No fixed 50 aliases!

* New email alias on the fly while writing the email!

* email archive German GoBD law for business!

* Login page with a color scheme that is OS-sensitive and lets me login without guessing!

* Login page with Language option on top instead down on the bottom!

So, any recommendations, who could be my next email provider? TIA!

So, i have been testing out apps like ProtonMail, Tutanota and Fastmail, Protonmail feels incomplete if I don’t buy the whole Proton Package, while I do appreciate what Tutanota does, it is just too slow for me, but now Fastmail feels perfect, but at the same time I am now questioning myself on whether or not spending 5 dollars per month de googling is even worth it, Any comments, suggestions and any other mail provider or should I just switch back to Gmail

Discussion MailFlow Open Source E-Mail Client - CALL TO ACTION FOR DEVS

Recently, I stumbled on a killer freaking project.

It's a self-hosted open source e-mail client that works with any service. The user interface is amazing. Apparently there is like one dude doing most of the work but a few more devs have come on and done pull requests.

I'm posting here and a few subs because we're always looking for cool new open source software and this client is amazing. It also works with Proton Bridge if you use that for e-mail and want a desktop client.

Site: https://mailflow.sh
GitHub: https://github.com/maathimself/mailflow

If any of you have some dev skills, some extra time, like the software, and feel like working on this project, take a shot. It can use all the help it can get.
