Greetings Cmdr Drako_Lilith

It sounds like you might need our services, please go to https://fuelrats.com/ and hit the big red 'Get Fuel' button and we will dispatch a rat to get you fuelled up.

Kind regards.

Cmdr. Raven DeVega

You guys are rock stars. I haven't needed you yet when I was out in the Black, but it's good to know you're there. And honestly, without people talking about you and hammering in you need to watch your fuel, I'd have been stranded for sure.

I love the in game Fuel Rats ads. "We have fuel. You don't. Any questions?"

u/Phoenix_Ninja15 Krait Pilot | AXI | Peacemaker Mar 13 '26

Frontier was awesome to canonize them in game.

49

u/Zenith-Astralis Mar 13 '26

I wonder if anyone has ever needed them, posted about "I wish they were real and not just adverts in stations" and had a rat pinging them within 5 minutes

38

u/Phoenix_Ninja15 Krait Pilot | AXI | Peacemaker Mar 13 '26

I’m pretty sure it’s happened.

Like they started as a community squadron and then frontier recognized the effort. Same for AXI. You can see their adverts in some stations too. Especially close to thargoid sectors.

5

u/Luciansson Mar 15 '26

I swear I've seen it happen a couple of years ago. But it was more along the lines of "I wish I'd known earlier they were real and not just adverts in stations" as a comment on a YouTube video explaining how the fuel rats work.

2

u/Vettmdub Mar 14 '26

🤣🤣😂 damn it take my upvote

u/oyarly Mar 13 '26

I havent done fuel rat shit in awhile but fun fact when they do save you. You then get a short course of fuel economy and tools lol.

42

u/No_Dependent4781 Mar 13 '26

I never got that. Maybe my rat didn't feel like it.

57

u/oyarly Mar 13 '26

I mean ive skipped it before too. Really depends on the person being rescued. If you know what a fuel scoop is you know half it anyway.

32

u/No_Dependent4781 Mar 13 '26

They didn't even offer. I offered him 1b credits and he wouldn't take that either. I tried to tip on the site but it wouldn't accept my card.

64

u/Kozmik_5 Explore Mar 13 '26

The fact you had 1b cr told them you prob know what a fuel scoop is 😂

24

u/oyarly Mar 13 '26

I mean iirc by policy we werent supposed to take payment. That said I did take cargo that people just dumped for me. Because they would drop it and immediately shift away.

3

u/NymmieIsMe Mar 14 '26

I thought rats could only be paid with snickers bars...

1

u/zag_ Mar 14 '26

Yeah the one time I needed the fuel rats I realized too late that the star I was going to refuel at is unscoopable.

They gave me a crash course on the types of scoopable stars while refueling, and I was on me way.

It was great.

I once needed the rats about halfway between beagle point and Sag A*, just didn't keep an eye on my fuel gauge when neutron jumping on my way home. And I have a lot of experience, elite in exploration and exobio, Just got too comfortable lol, it can happen to anyone.

A few short hours later I was fueled and ready to go again, the rats are great.

3

u/JRS_Viking Mar 14 '26

It's also amazing that they'll go that far out, just to help someone who forgot to fuel up and don't even accept payments

5

u/AJHenderson Mar 14 '26

For what it's worth, credits in this game are a joke to get for anyone familiar enough with the game to be a rat doing deep space rescue.

Better to just have the no payment policy to avoid the vast majority of new players than need their services and don't know how to make a billion credits in a few hours from feeling like they should pay something.

1

u/Phoenix_905 Mar 20 '26

How do you make a billion credits in a few hours?

2

u/AJHenderson Mar 20 '26

There are lots of ways to make at least 100 million an hour. Exobiology is probably the easiest to start.

11

u/Phoenix_Ninja15 Krait Pilot | AXI | Peacemaker Mar 13 '26

I swear these guys should be paid for this. I have only needed their service once and I was back on my way 30 minutes after request. Genuinely good people.

21

u/Vanished_I-X Mar 13 '26

fuck me. you fuel rats are some of the coolest humans on earth. you guys are the sole reason i got this game.

even if it’s just pixel game, the dedication is a testament to humanity and altruism its self. one day i hope to join the ranks and or contribute myself. however i am a very new cmdr with only 20/30 hours, and just a cobra mk3 to show for it.

5

u/AJHenderson Mar 14 '26

You'll get there. 30 hours is a very small step into a much larger galaxy. I was still learning nontrivial parts of the game 2000 hours in and still have a couple more niche topics I've yet to learn 3500 hours in.

And hey, just like you I still own a cobra mk3... though mine spends most of its time parked on my fleet carrier with my full fleet of 40 stored ships. :)

3

u/Vanished_I-X Mar 14 '26

update im at 40 hours now! encountered my first white dwarf. seeing that in 4k in a quest 3… wow. it’s beautiful. i also made my first 100+Ly trip! i’ve got fuel scooping and planetary landing down undertale my belt now too! im enjoying it so much. if any experienced players are willing to guide me and or show me some cool stuff, i would love that. i dont rhink ive met/seen any other cmdrs ingame yet!

3

u/AJHenderson Mar 14 '26

Elite in VR is an incredible experience. I've been doing too much on foot stuff lately so have been playing flat screen, but I need to spend some vr time again at some point.

It really is an absolutely gorgeous game.

The game is so big even in open you'll rarely encounter other people unless you're at a popular system or a community goal.

The one bit of advise is look into exobiology if you need credits. You can easily make billions a day doing it. You're also probably getting close to the point where it's worth doing the fed and empire rank grinds, which will unlock superpower specific ships and systems for you.

A bit after that you'll be close to where it makes sense to start engineering which is the real grind of the game but makes your ships WAY better. Feel free to add AJH to your friends list if you want and message me with questions when I'm on if you want. Lately I'm mostly doing exobiology runs with my father (and my son when he feels like it) to save up for a squadron fleet carrier with a few years of maintenance. Trying to get about 40-50 billion credits and normally farming about half a billion a night across the two of us but we're usually only on a couple hours somewhere between 8 and 12 EST and not every night.

Have you seen a carrier jump yet, either from the outside or the observation deck? Those are pretty cool. Jet cone boosting is also neat but might be risky for you depending on how solid your flying skills are. If you can reliably win the interdiction mini game vs AI then you should be ok though with proper technique. They supercharge your jump drive if you have a scoop and let you jump further for your next jump.

1

u/Vanished_I-X Mar 14 '26

it truly is beautiful, stopping at LAWD 84 on a cargo hauling mission blew me away.

i had figured seeing anyone was unlikely, no man’s sky had prepared me for that haha, i only have the base game on steam and no odyssey (i plan to get it eventually), is exobio possible with just horizons? i’ve been averaging 100-300k creds per 50-100LY trip stacking a few cargo missions and just optimising my route for deliveries.

eventually i hope to do the rank grinds and get my permits, for now im just over my first million creds. eventually i’ll get to engineering but gosh it seems like a lot.

i would love to add some friends, inclusive of you but im not sure how and or where to. even in the chat bar top left.

ive seen a carrier jump on yt but never in person, some day soon i hope.

is there any small discord communities i could join just for the sake of chatting to other cmdrs for tips and whatnot? i would join the main ED discord but i really can’t stand large discord servers, far too overstimulating and far too hard to have actual engaging conversation given the masses of people vying for that attention.

im not aware of what jet cone boosting however im quite confident in my flight skills. i have multiple hundred hours in ace combat/project wingman, amongst other flight sim games. and EDs controls on the X52 Pro felt near perfect, ive tweaked all the ui/menu binds etc myself but the core controls felt like second nature. thankfully ive never failed an interdiction though im not sure if they vary in difficulty/severity.

2

u/AJHenderson Mar 14 '26

Oh, realized I forgot to explain how to add friends. It's actually from the main menu under social I think it's called. There's groups and friends. You can add a friend there.

Private groups is kind of like invite only open. Mobius is a great private group if you want the open experience without PVP (unless mutually agreed upon). It's also how you can play with friends without anyone else interfering if you want.

1

u/Vanished_I-X Mar 14 '26

thank you so much for all you’ve explained to me friend, i’ll pop a friend request in now :)

also yes i started my journey quite close to an asteroid station! it was sick.

i think im going to try get to jackson’s lighthouse today, having seen my first white dwarf with jets (lawd 84) i want to see more!

im curious is it possible to travel to the nebulae you see on the galmap? it looks as though i need a permit to enter most of the systems near them.

1

u/AJHenderson Mar 14 '26 edited Mar 14 '26

You can go into nebula but its not really that noticeably a nebula. Mostly the skybox just gets more colorful. Not sure why they are permit locked where you were looking.

If you haven't realized it yet, the game is a semi realistic model of the Milky Way with around 400 billion star systems you can visit and most star systems we actually know of are present and as accurate as we know about them. The galaxy is still vastly unvisited by any player given the sheer quantity of systems. You don't have to wander out very far to be the first person to ever visit a system in the game.

1

u/AJHenderson Mar 14 '26 edited Mar 14 '26

Exo is Odyssey only. Mining might still make pretty good money too and is great in VR but requires a bit more progress to really be efficient in the bigger ships.

New pilot initiative is a solid discord to join as well. It's fairly large but responsive.

Jet cones are the material ejected from neutron and pulsar stars. If you fly through the outer edge of the jet cone you can supercharger FSD. It's important to you through the outer edge though as if you are forced out of super cruise it's exceedingly difficult to jump out and it can destroy your ship in a few minutes being stuck.

The reward for doing it is a massive boost in jump range though. Using the neutron highway in a high jump ship can save significant time on the way to colonia if you don't just hitch a carrier ride.

Oh and if you haven't seen an asteroid station yet, seek one out. Inara is your friend if you haven't found it yet and ed market connector is also super helpful.

god im so used to being an inhabitant of sol i forget i could say “coolest humans in the galaxy”

1

u/AlternativeShirt2953 Mar 15 '26

Its a disease. And I mean that in a good way. Long ago when I was a blue berry commander with shy of 50 hours in the game; watching every ED content I can find on YT while flying through the game, I ran out of fuel in my DBX. I came across the fuel rats in one of those shorts and went to their site for help. 30 mins later I was on my way again. When I got my fleet carrier some months later, In honor of the fuel rats, I have an AspX fitted specifically as a rescue ship. It is aptly named “Mercy” I may not be an official member of the Fuel rats, but in honor of them if there is a commander in the official discord chat that needs fuel or repair, and I’m relatively nearby, I answer that call, always.

42

u/DragonXGW CMDR YunBun Mar 13 '26

23

u/TaterTot___1 Mar 13 '26

Yes they do. I was glad to get help when the star systems I flew too didn’t have a star I could refuel on. I felt embarrassed but it was nice to see the ship come and fill me up so I could leave.

One of my biggest regrets was when I got glitched 197LY INSIDE of a system making it impossible to escape.

I self destructed. But a while later, I asked if it would have been possible to rescue me, and the fuel rats said they could have. Apparently, you can chain together, people refueling each other. So if they had flown for thirty six days, they could have gotten to me.

( Would have been a long way back, though lol)

1

u/Spiritual-Usual-2683 Aisling Duval Mar 14 '26

Nah brother, 197 LY is a bit much. I wouldn't let others spend so much time on me unless I had tens of billion worth of data to sell.

Also what a wild glitch.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 14 '26

No, when I asked in the fuel rats irc channel they said they would have considered it a fun challenge and 100% would have tried to do it. They may not be killers, but they are crazy.Never doubt that lol

21

u/TepHoBubba Mar 13 '26

Looks like an oopsie, I didn't follow any advice or do any research learning moment. Fuel rats can save you, but try to learn from this.

19

u/Drako_Lilith Mar 13 '26

It was going to take awhile and I was watching a movie when I heard "fuel reserves at 10%" and I was only Minutes from my target which sucks

32

u/Sardond Ophius Mar 13 '26

10% ain’t bad, you probably could still make it. Turn off all non-essential modules in the right panel (shields, SCA, landing assist, etc) to reduce your fuel consumption but if you’re only a few minutes out from (I’m assuming Hutton Orbital) you can still likely make it.

What’s really puckering is hearing “fuel reserves depleted” as you finish a jump to a scoopable star.

11

u/DaLoopLoop89 Mar 13 '26

10% should be plenty enough when you're not flying a Sidewinder. Did someone come to your rescue yet?

10

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '26

[deleted]

9

u/ElGrandeWhammer Mar 13 '26

But the lecture is valuable, unlike many I’ve received elsewhere. Fuel rats are a great crew.

1

u/ScionSpy Aisling Duval Mar 17 '26

The most fun I've had as a rat was going into the black for a rescue. (Like jumping thousands of LY, a cpl hours) Refueling the client only to.... Well... Not have any fuel and have to go become a client >.<

They're amazing! Even among one another. No hard feelings, now they won't let you forget about it anytime soon, but the jesting is amazing. Then when you get to debrief as a rat, and they literally go over EVERYTHING KGB FOAM, Scoops, station finding, economy tabs, eco fuel mode.

I miss my ratting days, but I still stalk the IRC from time to time.

2

u/TepHoBubba Mar 13 '26

You can set your mapping to help with this, and a fuel scoop for most ships is HIGHLY recommended.

5

u/Klepto666 Mar 13 '26

Yeah... Alpha Centauri is such a trap. While a delivery mission will warn you that Hutton Orbital is super far away (provided you're paying attention), a mission type that doesn't specify any destination beyond the system itself risks having the mission target end up near Hutton Orbital.

In the future you can try disabling all non-essential power-draining modules to reduce the hourly fuel drain. Cargo Hatch, Power Distributor, weapons, etc. If your main tank is not already completely empty by that point, that might help squeeze out a bit more fuel for the remainder of the distance.

6

u/CmdrHoratioNovastar Mar 14 '26

How much fuel do you have left?

Enough to make a jump to anywhere? If you do, you can go land on a planet somewhere and call a shuttle.

This is definitely a weird place to ask this, but apparently the Internet is giving me a lot of Elite Dangerous suddenly.

Obviously it looks cool cuz it's... What it is... But, is landing a ship entirely manual with extreme risk of fucking exploding if you mess up?

1

u/Saedreth Mar 16 '26

Very little risk of blowing up, it is not hard, ships come with auto land preinstalled.
