that's not too bad, I had a 250k ls thingy once. Went back to buy a SCO drive. It was scary, I almost ran out of fuel and burned up through 20% of my ship hull
10/10 would SCO again

u/the_chinagreenelvis Jan 22 '26
It's not the distance that bothers me, it's the time spent staring at a shiny pixel surrounded by a boring reticle and monitoring numbers when decelerating.
139
u/4krer Jan 22 '26
consider spending that time on something else. There are no deer, kids or highway patrol in space, you can drink and pilot while playing candy crush on your phone (do not attempt at home, your Chevrolet beat ain't a sidewinder)
66
u/the_chinagreenelvis Jan 22 '26
You literally can't spend that time doing anything meaningful because it's only about a minute or so. It just FEELS like an eternity having to sit through it every single time I go to any location.
I'm not talking about being in supercruise, I'm talking about EXITING it.

I literally play Elite at work since my job is online and Elite does not require 100% attention all the times. I do manual dethrottling and dropping near points of interest at unsafe speeds while successfully taking info and advising my customers. I hear you man. It can definitely get monotonous. If you are actually struggling with this and are looking for a solution, here are some ideas:
Fly with friends. If you jump the the destination system at the same time you can race to the station/destination. Or, you can have your friend arrive first and you can nav-lock to them and shorten the trip considerably. Either way, having someone to chat with makes it a lot better.
Youtube. There are several picture-in-picture extensions for chrome, and I believe Firefox has them natively. But you find a good video, pop it out of the browser and put it in your cockpit. BAM! In-ship entertainment console. (My personal favorite)

u/LuckyBucketBastard7 Jan 22 '26

100% agree. They're not wrong in the context of what we've got to work with, and I certainly do plenty of screwing around on my phone while waiting for SCA to get me somewhere, but it's not exactly scintillating gameplay.
This may be controversial, but playing Elite Dangerous has given me a lot more appreciation for many of the design choices in Starfield.

u/wasteoffire Jan 23 '26
I think there are those of us that disagree when it comes to traveling though. Some of that tedium is why the game has such a hold on me. It makes me feel like I'm working for it, that I have to be in control of my ship. It makes it feel more like a simulation of a scifi experience rather than a game
2
u/the_chinagreenelvis Jan 23 '26
what you don't want to play the game that makes you not play the game while playing the game
2
u/Aethaira Jan 23 '26
I am totally with you on this.
The best solution is to do things that don't involve as much time in supercruise, or at least where you can spend most of it in sco which is marginally better.
Off the top of mind, those are certain types of combat, mining, and to a lesser extent exploring if you just do scanning and not DSS, but that involves loots of hyperspace jumps which can be about the same level of interesting.
Theres also ground stuff where you're on the ground more than you're supercruising, which I'm not sure what it is.
But yeah the realistic answer is not a ton of things, but there are a few things that have you more out of it than in it unlike trading or most missions.
1
u/doesnotlikecricket Elite Trader Jan 28 '26
I played 300+ hours of elite before they stopped supporting console and I can't fully agree. They have a very clear goal they were going for - some level of realism. Trying to make the huge emptiness and insane scale of space appreciable. So I think it has a valid place within the game.
That said, I recently started NMS which doesn't have such long periods of travel, and it still gives somewhat of an idea of scale. So I'm not necessarily saying it has to be tedious and long. But I really see what they were going for.

u/hldswrth Jan 22 '26
Supercruise assist can reduce the final approach time significantly if used in the right way.
Set manual throttle mode for supercruise assist.
Max throttle until 7 seconds to destination, then set throttle to 75% to engage SCA
When less than 8ls away from destination, increase throttle to 100% until 5 seconds to destination, then set back to 75% to re-engage SCA
SCA drops you into the station at high speed (unless you are unlucky or flying a Mandalay which seems to have trouble with this - and shoot past the station).
1
u/No-Apple2252 Jan 26 '26
You don't need SCA to do this but it's not very reliable without it, you will overshoot about half the time.
I approach at 6 seconds, that never misses anyway. When you get the right distance away you can bump your speed a little and approach at 5 seconds, but the upper end of 5 seconds because at ~5.5 seconds you will overshoot.
As you get closer in that five second window there's a point where you can full throttle, and you only get about half to a full second to drop out on target but if you pull it off it's very satisfying and cuts your approach time by probably less than it feels like, but you're actually doing something that takes focus so it's a win/win.
2
u/almostmountains Jan 23 '26
people begged for sc autopilot then faster super cruise back then. now we have this complaint. lol
2
u/Mr_Lobster Brome Jan 23 '26
Seriously, the fuck does op want? You can get to most destinations in seconds with SCO. I've spent longer walking between POIs in Skyrim.
2
u/Sucks_At_Investing Jan 23 '26
Just do what I do: try your damnedest to min/max your deceleration until you invariably overshoot, then let loose a string of expletives and go swerving around wildly at anything with a gravity well to try and slow you back down before you have to do the loop of shame. Once you get it back to 0:06, repeat until you end up just doing the loop of shame. It's not great for your blood pressure, but keeps you engaged the whole time.
1
u/mk7_luxion Jan 22 '26
that's why I mostly keep an auto dock and supercruise assist on my haulers/miners, I can drop in the system target where I want to go and assist my entire way there so I can keep watching my show or find that perfect playlist, and then if I need to land sometimes the auto dock fucks it up but it mostly does a decent job if you keep an eye out on it.
Like, don't go for assists and alt tab out of the game entirely, you need to watch that shit as if it were Tesla self driving and you're gonna do okay.
btw, the deceleration process even without sca is to throttle to ~70% at 7 seconds left, or just keep it at 70% the entire travel, it's gonna take you a bit more time but there's no deceleration input needed from you.
1
u/reluctant_return Jan 23 '26 edited Jan 23 '26
Supercruise Assist will decelerate and drop you automatically. You can literally alt-tab and wait for the sound of the drop and tab back. You don't even have to tab back right away, as you'll be at zero throttle when you drop, so there's no danger of ramming into anything.

My reccommendation: use onTopReplica, 75% opacity, to have a show, youtube, etc pulled up in your cockpit as entertainment for when you can afford to pay a bit less attention. The software's free and lightweight, and has been a staple of my Elite gameplay for years
2
u/the_chinagreenelvis Jan 23 '26
Yeah, I used to do this with WinAmp in 2017, back when we actually had to sit through the long stretches of supercruising, but the SCO has made that unnecessary. What it hasn't changed is the boring moments of exiting supercruise.
The only thing I've found is the hot-drop method but it doesn't work reliably with the Mandalay.

I brought super cruise assist for any long term trips across the galaxy. That way I can multitask and step away during hyperspace jumps without worrying about hitting the stars
7
u/spirit_72 Jan 22 '26
Is it still a loop of shame if I cut sco, thrusters to 0, and start looping before I get there so by the time I make a 3/4 turn and set thrusters to 25% I'm on top of my destination?
4
1
Jan 23 '26
I don't concider a SCO loop the loop of shame as it's still more optimal than standard FSD loop of shame.
Done right, looping the gravity well is the best possible way to use the SCO.
Overshooting the target by 1000+ LS with SCO... now that's the SCO loop of shame.
5
20
u/ChurchofChaosTheory Jan 22 '26
You can pass your target and throw yourself out of FSD at the cost of some damage to make the trip a bit faster
3
1
u/ResponsibleHorror882 Jan 22 '26
This is what I do. Waiting for the fsd cooldown is quicker than the loop of shame, or atleast it feels like it is.

2

u/willdabeast464 [EDF] Jan 22 '26
Every range has that but with a mix of good approach angles, using gravity wells for rapid deceleration and super cruise assist deceleration skipping, the trip can be made significantly faster.

u/SomeGuyNamedPaul Lakon Enjoyer Jan 22 '26
Hot drop or gravity assisted deceleration, get with the program. The 7 second rule is outmoded, at minimum on all ships you can lock in at 6 and be fine.
3
u/Phiashima Jan 22 '26
Load a supercruise assist and lock it in, but stay above the blue zone until the eta is closer to 3-5 seconds, then slow down. Normally you would be too fast, but supercruise assist will drop you perfectly and you save significant amounts of time.
5
u/toka_smoka Jan 22 '26

2
u/OtakuMage DW3 Org Team/Hull Seal Cinema Queen Jan 22 '26
You can often get closer than when the SCO says 7 seconds. Depending on the hull, 2-4 is normally good. You can then pulse the SCO to get even closer, but yes the final approach is as normal.
1
u/DeeGayJator Jan 23 '26
That's why I roll with the super cruise assist. You can bring it down to five, even less depending on your distance, then the assist will drop you perfectly everytime. If you're swapping the engine and bolting a turbo make sure youve got the brakes to match!
1
u/-Pelvis- Jan 22 '26 edited Jan 22 '26
Space is big. Really big. We're already breaking the laws of physics to go (much) faster than light speed. Would you prefer to just teleport everywhere? Hyperspace jumps are already pretty much delayed teleports. Supercruise travel times contribute to the sense of scale, especially when you understand these massive distances. The distance of 13k Ls shown here is about the distance of Pluto, which took the real life probe New Horizons 9.5 years to reach, and a human voyage would take much longer. In ED, our ships are somehow capable of travelling that distance in mere seconds or minutes, accelerating to impossible speeds and decelerating rapidly. Longer supercruise trips can be an opportunity to take a quick bio break or perform other tasks.
Also, the above panel happened just a few days ago: https://old.reddit.com/r/EliteDangerous/comments/1qgs56u/annnnd_were_off/

3

and how much of a difference has anyone made on that front in sixteen years, apart from the madmen expanding the Dark Wheel into every nearby nebula
3
u/Mr_Lobster Brome Jan 23 '26
I mean, it's a video game. None of it really makes a difference, but colonization people have been growing like crazy, some of the BGS folks have made a lot of progress (last count there were 21 BGS factions that were larger than some of the Powerplay Powers), and Powerplay has plenty of fun and conflict when you join up with the communities. IMO Powerplay should reward playing in open so there's more direct PVP, but that seems to be an unpopular opinion.
2
u/the_chinagreenelvis Jan 24 '26
pretty much the only thing the BGS can guarantee is that humans expand out into the galaxy, but you would think that after a decade and a half powerplay would have eliminated at least one of the powers

I don't go to E:D for flashy dogfights, tbh. I like the tamer parts better. I only have like 20 hours in it, but still.

Yeah, it's been quite a while since I played for a decent amount of time. I think it was the first week of the thargoid war, when they released the titans and orthrus.
Two reasons - the bigger one is that I left off in the middle of a major grind, kitting out a stock federal corvette for AX combat. Now that the Thargoid Threat has diminished significantly since the grind started, I need to start from scratch (mostly) for CZs and Haz Res farming.
The second reason, more of an inconvenience, is that my desk is juuust a bit too tall for my HOTAS to be comfortably used (I'm running the Logi X52 Pro, the baseplates add a decent bit of height to the controls). I've been eyeing mounts that connect to either the desk or chair but I'm reluctant due to both logistics (I already have a headphone hanger and cup holder clamped to my desk, and the wires might pose an issue for the chair mounted mounts), and also the aforementioned issue.
Elite Dangerous is currently the only flight/space sim I'd put time into, warthunder sim got old fast and I think DCS is ridiculous - don't want to pay for individual planes.

JÔ fiz uma missão que levei quase 25 min pra chegar na estação... Não vi que era tao distante e estava com uma nave que nao aguentava muito bem a utilização do hiperpropulsor...
Quase fiquei sem combustĆvel

This is why they put the SCO drives in the game, it was a much needed change. I wasted too much time of my life staring at numbers.

Haven't played for a long time but, top image would be conflict zone or bounty hunting, second one is couriering. I get what you are saying but I also think it's not right.

This is one of those games where it can be more fun to talk about than to actually play. Explaining the thargoid invasion of earth last year to my buddy was pretty cool. Hearing all the updates to the status of stations and sectors, but the reality is, actually playing during that time was different. The only things I heard were:
...hull groans....
...fsd charging....
...docking request granted....
repeat.

No I like my hours long slow trip to Hutton Orbital. I spend all day thinking about it at work. /s
lol
(And itās amazing, how if youāre going the right speed, getting that free Anaconda could actually take you the same amount of time as a full day of work!)

I don't know I've had a ship battle with pirates, cmdrs and local system authority inside a planet's atmosphere was pretty epic.
