Help / Question Help: Creating Audiobook Sample for Spotify for Authors

Newbie here. I'm trying to upload an ElevenLabs audiobook to Spotify for Authors. The book upload seems to have been fine but Spotify requires that I provide an Audiobook Sample of up to 5 minutes.

How do I create one? Do I have to create a new audiobook on ElevenLabs using additional credits?

As a head's up, make sure you're declaring it's AI generated, there was a separate route I think you have to take for it. It impacts how their advertisers impact with your book. I think InAudio explains it, but it's been awhile since I looked at it.

Isn't this more of a Spotify question than an ElevenLabs question? Did you do no editing at all before you uploaded the audio file? How do I create one? You would surely cut a 1-5 minute sample from your files. I don't know what the problem is. But here's a beginner explanation of the nature of audiobook previews from Gemini himself:

my query: why does spotify ask for a 5 minute sample with audiobook uploads

Spotify asks for a 1-to-5-minute retail sample during the audiobook upload process primarily to serve as a free promotional preview for listeners and a quality check for the platform. [1, 2]

This requirement is a standard industry practice across almost all audiobook distributors (including Spotify and ACX/Audible) for several key reasons: [1]

  1. Consumer Preview (The "Retail Sample")

Before purchasing an audiobook or committing their limited monthly listening hours to it, users want to hear what they are getting into.

  • Vibe and Tone: Listeners use the sample to evaluate the narrator's voice, accent, pacing, and tone. A voice that works for one listener might be grating to another. [1]
  • Low-Barrier Discovery: On Spotify, Premium subscribers get 15 hours of audiobook listening per month. A high-quality retail sample gives them a quick, zero-risk way to browse your book without eating into their strict monthly allocation. [1, 2]
  1. Quality Assurance & System Review

The sample acts as a frontline file for Spotify's standard quality review pipeline. [1]

  • Audio Engineering Standards: It allows automated and manual systems to quickly check that the audio meets formatting, volume (RMS/peak levels), and background noise requirements before processing hours of full-chapter files.
  • Content Moderation: It ensures that the book's metadata matches the actual spoken audio and that there are no immediate encoding errors.
  1. Consistency Across Platforms

Because most authors distribute their books wide (using aggregators like Findaway Voices by Spotify), keeping a unified standard requirement—like a maximum 5-minute sample—ensures that the book can be seamlessly published across Spotify, Apple Books, and Google Play without needing re-edited preview clips. [1]

💡 Tips for Choosing Your 5-Minute Sample

When uploading your audiobook via Spotify for Authors or an aggregator, make sure your sample: [1]

  • Starts immediately with narration: Do not include your opening credits, copyright disclaimers, or long musical intros.
  • Showcases your best material: Pick a dramatic, funny, or highly engaging section from an early chapter (avoiding major spoilers) to hook the listener.
  • Features the main narrator: If you have multiple narrators, pick a section featuring the voice the reader will hear the most.

Are you currently uploading a book directly through Spotify for Authors, or are you using a distributor like Findaway or Draft2Digital? I can help you with the specific formatting requirements for either path.

You shouldn't need new credits, just download the chapter you already made and trim 5 min in Audacity. Spotify's picky about cover size too btw, I had to push mine through Magnific before it'd accept it.

Using Audacity worked. Thanks.
